The Running Thread - 2016

I did my 5K last night. The official results aren't up but the Garmin says 45:01 (14:16 pace). I went out a tad too fast for me and ended up with my fastest mile so far since I started tracking. Not gonna lie, by mile 2 I was wondering if the whole running thing was such a good idea,. I think I did fine, with this being the longest amount of time I've actually run since I started back up by about 10 minutes. We lucked out with the weather. It was about 78 when we started. Unseasonably cool if you know anything about Sacramento summers! Here's the obligatory pre-race selfie:

ETA: Official time 44:53.

Nice race! Congratulations! And I think a lot of us have asked ourselves that question about running being a good idea. But we keep coming back for more. :)

Congrats on your race! And how fun to run it with your BFF! Wow, 78 sounds lovely for Sacramento! There is a certain type of heat I haven't felt since growing up (in Stockton with parents that didn't like air conditioning :crazy2:) . I know a couple of weeks ago people were melting in the triple digits- glad its cooled down a bit :)

It's like you were reading my mind on mile 2 of my last 5k! Congrats on still getting your fast time after the mile 2 questioning. Also I spy a sparkle visor and a Mickey hat, both excellent headwear choices!!!! :)

I was thinking during my long run yesterday how "nothing" running 2 miles is when I know I have a bunch more miles up ahead. But tell me I only have to run 3.1 and getting to that 2 mile point feels like it takes fooooorever. Running is so mental.

DH and I decided we needed a change of scenery. So we drove to a park about 30 minutes from home to do our weekend run this morning.

Looked at the trail map and chose a 1.5 mile loop. The sign at the trail head said "steep hills on trail." Oh, well...how bad can it be?

Ummmm...they weren't joking! There were multiple steep inclines! After the second one, we figured out why there were benches at the top of each!

But the flatter areas were smooth trails with good footing. We also missed a turn and did 2.5 miles on the first loop. Oops!

We had a great time, though! It was fun and we didn't use our run/walk intervals...just ran when it was flat and walked the steeper hills.

Moral of the story...a change of scenery is good!

Question for everyone! Now that my I'm in my 11th week of training, I have run through my ipod music, exhausted my Pandora channels, and starting to suffer from a mild case of boredom! What say ye wise experts about specific books on tape or podcasts that are worth listening to during a run?

Most of my runs are about 60-90 minutes right now. Thank you for any suggestions.

Congrats. I'm glad your BFF ended up running with you and that you guys had a good time. As for the mile 2 issue, happens to me all the time. There are many times during races where I am mentally swearing at myself. But, in the end I am always happy I ran and proud of myself for fighting through when things get tough. You made it through and you now have other milestones to tackle. Great job!

Mickey Miles and More Podcast
Marathon Training Academy Podcast
Disunplugged Podcast which also include the Connecting With Walt Podcast in the same feed (If you love Disney history, like I do, these will be awesome)
I also still listen to old episodes of the Marathon Show Podcast. I love the energy of the episodes with Joe. The new ones with Eddie McCoy do nothing for me.

That's my list for now. I keep looking to add to my list but these keep my busy enough.

I was right there in your shoes a couple of years ago. I was getting sick of listening to the same music over and over. The best thing I found was an Audible subscription. I just find a book that sounds interesting, download it and listen to it during runs. When it ends, I repeat the process. As far as specific books, I think it comes down to what you like to read and/or what will entertain you. I tend towards Sci-fi/fantasy and historical fiction if you would like suggestions in those genres.

When I run, listening to the books has the added benefit of occupying my mind, allowing me to put my body on auto-pilot and making the miles go by faster. Also, if I get a book I'm really into, the anticipation of resuming the story can be an extra incentive to get to the run. Hope this helps!

Thanks for all the acknowledgments! This is such a supportive group. :grouphug:

No A/C in the valley? :faint: That's just not right!

I've run a bunch of 5ks. On each and every one, I had the same thought. :) Maybe that's the difference between runners and non-runners: Runners answer yes.

Congrats on the finish (and the great selfie!)

Thank you! 'Runners answer yes' is a great quote. By the finish line I'd forgotten about my doubts.

Thank you! The visor is from headsweats.com. I got it at the Wine and Dine Expo last year.

Thank you for all of your support - you're the best! 10K is the next milestone. :woohoo:

I like to laugh and am not easily offended. If that applies to you, I suggest the Mike O'Meara Show podcast. Mike does voices, they cover events of the day and follow along with the lives of the guys on the show. I've been listening to Mike off and on for over 20 years.

For podcasts, I usually listen to Another Mother Runner or Mickey Miles. For audiobooks, I like things that make me laugh...Bossypants by Tina Fey, Yes Please by Amy Poehler, etc. I finished Running Like a Girl by Alexandra Heminsley recently. It's kind of like Bridget Jones learns to be a runner.

It happens to me even in training. I want to quit between 1 and 2 miles. One of my favorite YouTubers (Jen/Pretty Neat Living) explained it really well. Your heart rate is getting higher, your breathing is becoming more labored, and your body is working hard. Your body is saying "Hey! I don't like this! We need to slow down!" She suggested (and I try to do this as well) to do a quick check of yourself. Is your heart okay? Is your breathing okay? Are your legs okay? If the answer is yes, keep pushing! It usually gets me over that hump if I can do that.

Mickey Miles is good! I have subscribed to Marathon Show, but haven't really listened yet.

Audible is good! You can get the first 30 days free, if you haven't subscribed before. You can also sometimes get them from the library.
