The Running Thread - 2016

ATTQOTD: 3:45 for me - I've only run one marathon so far and my time was 5:45 - I think I have some work to do! Now granted, if I hadn't hit the wall at mile 20, my time would have been more like 5:15, so I just need to get more proficient at training & fueling and knock off 90 plus minutes, lol. I'm running my second marathon in October, so we'll see how that goes. I might have to wait 20 years to BQ.

@CheapRunnerMike You are awesome! Good luck!

ATTQOTD: 3:40 for me 35-39F.
By the time I'm 65+ I'll probably just be focused on winning all the 5k age group awards after playing mind games with all the other gray haired women I see as competition???

But that pace chart does make me really impressed for all of you participating or gunning for it eventually :)

On a side note: they released the rock n roll Chicago medals and I'm geeking out about the ferris wheel design that I will get to earn in July. I will be hot but I will get my bling!

ATTQOTD: 3:45 for me. Never gonna happen, but I am ok with that. My half PR is 2:24. I think a full is something I just want to finish, I am not particularly concerned about time, as long as I am fast enough that I don't have to get on the bus;) Although that is what I said before my first half. For my full that means staying under 14 min/mi for the first 20 miles. After that there is an additional cushion of a minute or two.

For me, I won't be 35 on race day until Boston Marathon 2021 (April 19th) which means I won't hit the new window for qualifying with races until Mid-September of 2019 (3:10 minus the applicant window). This is also assuming the window doesn't move down which I've read recently they might do. So, I've got about 3.5 years to either get the sub-3 or be able to run Boston in about 5 years from now (assuming I get a 3:10 of course which is no guarantee either).

Bummer on the birthday...They had just lowered the BQ times when I ran my first marathon. I would have qualified first time out under the previous standard. In all honesty though, if people are being turned away the last few years and the cutoff is around 2:30, they probably do need to knock another 5 minutes off the current standard :duck:

BTW, I am in Boston for two weeks beginning in 10 days, staying right across the street from Boston Common, so will get in a lot of runs along the Charles River. With all of the universities in the city, Boston is definitely one of the best running cities in America. Looking forward to the trip, but a shame that it didn't overlap with the race.

You're wallet won't think it's a shame...Boston hotels are crazy this weekend! Have a great trip and enjoy running the Charles.

Awww thanks...

Business trip, so I'm not paying, but I totally get what you are saying. I (my company) have paid over $600/night for a bad room in Boston during some weeks.

Yea I agree. Because of what's happened the last few years I feel it would be best if they did just drop it. I remember reading (maybe letsrun) that the BAA was going to possibly review it for 2018. That's why I'm gunning for a sub-3 on the off chance they change the standards right before I register.

If I am doing my math correctly, I get an extra 5 minutes for the Marathon 2019. Born 11/5/83, I usually run a marathon in early January. So if I get a sub 3:10 in Jan. 2018 (Ill be 34 for that race day) the next Boston I would be able to partake in is April 2019. @CheapRunnerMike does that sound correct? I don't know why it seems so confusing to me, I don't think it really is, but I'm not 100% sure.

Yes you are correct...I qualified at Disney in January 2015 for the 2016 Boston, so if I had been 34 when I qualified I could use that time to run as a 35 year old in 2016.

Thanks for the QOTD. I've never actually looked to see what my BQ time is, since I know that's a goal that's likely out of my reach. Turns out it's 4:00. Yeah, not going to happen and that's okay by me. I do admire those who achieve it though.

Good luck to all you racers this weekend and excited to hear how it goes. @CheapRunnerMike can't wait to hear about the race.

@Hannahinwonderland another motivating thing to watch might be Spirit of the Marathon. I really enjoyed watching that prior to my first marathon.

Hi everyone!

Love the community spirit here and finally got the nerve to post. I've enjoyed running for the past few years - about 3 miles max per run. Only just started doing longer runs training for the upcoming Tinkerbell half (entered in a panic after missing the Star Wars one) and just completed my first 10k and half during training.

ATTQOTD: 3:40. The running calculator says I could barely qualify based on my hilly half and my flat 10k says I would have a nice cushion. But 26.2 is vastly different than 13.1 and 6.2 and I don't think I'd be ready to train for that distance for a long time.

I only have 1 race to add (my first half!)

4/3 Rock n Roll SF: 1:45/1:43:56

Welcome to the thread, I added your race to the list. That's an awesome first half marathon time! Congrats to you! Thanks for joining in on the thread and we look forward to your involvement moving forward.

Welcome! Glad you've joined the conversation and that is a great time for what must have been a hilly half, based on you saying so along with every picture I've ever seen of San Francisco...way to go!
