The Prize for the most Indecisive Traveller

Wanderlust - You know I share your view about stopping in LA on arrival after the long haul; rather than flying through to the final destination particularly if heading to the East Coast.
However, SLC from LA is not a long distance. Have you considered flying through to SLC and gaining extra time that way?

I would have done the same as you. Much as I love my Disney time, in this case, I would have shaved time off DLR to have extra time at Yellowstone.

I agree that flying on to SLC makes sense. Unfortunately our flight lands in LAX at 11pm. By the time we clear customs it will probably be after midnight.

Even if there are red-eyes, I figure we are best to get about 7 hours sleep and then start fresh the next day.

It's great to hear you agree with my decision to spend more time in Yellowstone. Having never been there, it's hard to know if all my choices are the right one. I can just go by my research and at present my research is filling me with much excitement. :goodvibes

Just thought I would chime in and say that bearman is awesome. We booked him for 2 days this past June for the full day tour and a bear watching tour and really thought it was money well spent.:goodvibes

We did drive at night in Yellowtone, we just took it easy and was fine and never come close to hitting anything. We stopped at rexburg bear world as well. We paid extra and got to bottle feed some bear cubs.

We flew into LAX then connected to SLC and we were absolutely wrecked by the time we got there.....we slept then got up the next day and drove half way to Yellowstone.

I would cut days from Disney for yellowstone too. We loved it so much we are going back in December to see it covered in snow :)

Oh. I hadn't realised or forgot that your flight arrives at 11 pm. Yes. Best get sleep and start afresh the next day.

I loved my time at Yellowstone. There was just so much to see and it was just stinkin' beautiful everywhere. And it really was stinkin'; with the hot sulfur springs. ;)

I think you'll just love the nature and photography opportunities on your trip. :goodvibes

Ooops, apologies, I just checked my plane itinerary and it's actually 10pm. Slightly better, but still very late.

Lol, I wasn't sure just how bad it would smell as, not surprisingly, much of the promotional touristy stuff I've read doesn't mention the smell.

My departed grandparents lived their lives in Rotorua. So most of my childhood holidays were spent smelling the lovely sulphuric fumes of this geothermal area. I love Rotorua, it's one of the best places in the country to take kids. So even though the smell is not the nicest, I associate it with happy memories. :thumbsup2

Wanderlust, your itinerary sounds amazing. I think you have diffidently made the right choice, do as much as Yellowstone as you can while you are there. As Disneyland can be done at the beginning or end of any US trip, you will definitely get other opportunities to spend more time there.

You sure will need to rest up when you get to Hawaii as you all will be really busy prior to that, but it sure will be worth it.

I agree with the others. LA is easy to use as a stopover point in the US - you'll get the chance to visit DLR again for sure :thumbsup2

Love the new accommodation. It's always nice to have some extra breathing room for a couple of nights :goodvibes Sounds like you'll be getting plenty of time in the park and wildlife viewing opportunities as it is.

Thanks ladies.

Planning has stalled a bit lately as I'm back into the full swing of work and rushed off my feet.

I'm hoping to book the Yellowstone tour soon as it seems the good companies get booked out early. But other than that, I think I'll hold out a month or so before paying for anything else.

Hope that work is manageable. Here's to booking the Yellowstone tour soon. :thumbsup2

Dreaded work! I am back next week and not looking forward to it at all, this year is going to be a tuff one, so I am really keen for our september holiday. I will just keep telling myself that I am at work so that I can go on holiday, hopefully that will help me get through every day.

I put off booking anything else for ours as I am trying to wait till the bank balance looks better - or should I say at least have something in it.:lmao: I am not sure if its a bad sign or something because as soon as I am able to put money towards our holiday something comes up. This week I have found out that my really reliable car has decided to die numerous deaths. just cost a fortune today and have a list of other things that need doing, some immediately, others in the next month or so - stupid car! I am trying to be positive and not think its an omen of some kind. ;)

Looking forward to hearing what tours you end up booking and any other trip plans.

Work is pretty hectic at present, but a bit exciting at the same time. I've had a change of job description and it's renewed my energy for my job. Like all new positions, it takes a while to get settled into the role. But once I've got my head around things I'm optimistic that it will be a good year. :)

Ah, that annoying thing known as the bank balance, how I am familiar with thee. I have about 4 things I want to book at present and I feel like they're all lined up waiting for available funds.
It's probably a blessing that I'm busy back at work as the more I research, the more I want to book. I'm not exactly known to be a patient person.

What a pain about your car. There is never a good time for a car to die, but the worst time is when you're preparing to pay for something else. I hope it's not too much of an expensive fix.

Yes. I know that optimistic feeling at work. :thumbsup2

Time for yet another change to my plans. Only this time the change was made as much through necessity as choice.

During the night a helpful poster from Trip Advisor sent me a PM to notify me of the announced Yellowstone road closures during 2014. It seems a major road closure was happening during my visit and was going to cause havoc to my plans.

A map will help explain things further, so here is one courtesy of the NPS.
http://www.nps.gov/features/yell/interactivemap/

My plan on the 29th September has always been to drive from Jackson, up through Grand Teton National Park and enter Yellowstone at the South Entrance. When we hit West Thumb, we were going to turn left and head to Old Faithful Inn.

The problem is that the road between West Thumb and Old Faithful is closing early September for roadworks and will not be reopening for the remainder of the season. The alternative routes to Old Faithful are to either go anti-clockwise around the lower loop (i.e via Canyon and Madison), or go around both Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks and enter Yellowstone via the West Entrance.
The first option would take far too long. The second option wouldn't be very scenic (i.e. it would basically be a wasted day).

As well as this, it completely threw out my plans for the 30th which were to do a complete lap of the lower loop. When I found this out this morning I was gutted! I had prepared myself mentally for the possibility of snow forcing changes to our plans, but not roadworks. I tell you what, planning a trip to yellowstone near the end of the season is no easy task. I might even go as far as to say that it takes as much planning as trip to WDW.

Anyway, not to be beaten, I jumped online and took another look at Yellowstone lodging. A change on the website showed that Lake Yellowstone Hotels and Cabins are now staying open until early October (they were previously shutting late September, a few days before I arrived). However, the booking part of their website wasn't recognising this extension in dates. Crossing my fingers this October date I was looking at wasn't a mistake, I called the hotel to find out more.

The guy on the phone was amazing and delivered a huge dose of pixie dust pixiedust:

Not only did he change our 29th Sep booking at Old Faithful to a cabin at Lake, but he looked up our Old Faithful booking on the 30th and discovered that there had been an opening in one of their very hard-to-get ensuite rooms. He also told me that he could make dinner reservations for us on both nights, when here I was thinking that I couldn't do that until much later in the year. :cool1:

So plans for the 29th and 30th are now as follows:

Sep 29th. Drive through Grand Teton NP as planned and up through the Southern entrance, but when we hit West Thumb junction we will now turn right instead of left and head to Lake. We have dinner booked that night in Lake Hotel.

Sep 30: As long as there is no morning snow or ice on the roads, we will get going early and head for Hayden Valley (the stretch of road between Lake and Canyon). This is a major wildlife viewing area in Yellowstone and it's best visited at dawn or dusk when the animals are most active. I had previously dismissed visiting this area during prime times as it would have meant dangerous night driving. But everything happens for a reason, and it seems these road closures may work out in my favour.
Continue via Canyon and Madison to Old Faithful. Don't be fooled by the mileage on the map - this drive could potentially take all day. Between all the great places to stop and enjoy the scenery, the slow driving speeds in Yellowstone, and the potential for traffic jams (caused by people and animals), drives in Yellowstone take much longer than one might expect.

As mentioned we now have an en-suite room at Old Faithful. The old original part of the lodge has very few en-suite rooms, and as such you can't even book them online. To score one, you either need to book well over a year in advance, or you need to cross your fingers for a cancellation. It seems I was lucky and called at the exact right time to score a cancellation.
Anyway, these rooms don't have a shower (you still need to use the shared bathrooms if you want a stand-up shower), but they have a lovely claw foot bath with one of those hand-held shower nozzles. How better to end a long day out exploring, and to escape the freezing night-time temperatures, than by checking into one of the world's most famous wooden lodges and relaxing in a claw-foot bath? So excited. :cloud9:

We have dinner booked that night in Old Faithful restaurant, and I'm also hoping to attend a ranger talk that afternoon or evening. I want to try and help my son get his Junior Ranger badge and one of the requirements is to attend a ranger talk.

Time for some pics of the new addition to our accommodation options.

The four pics below have come from the Xanterra website http://www.yellowstonenationalparklodges.com/lodging/summer-lodges/lake-yellowstone-hotel-cabins/

We will be staying in a cabin. They are pretty basic and small, plus the beds are only doubles, but at least now we get to say we've stayed in a cabin within Yellowstone. It does have an ensuite which is good.

The cabins are next to Lake Yellowstone Hotel, a grand old hotel which has some of the most expensive accommodation in the park. We couldn't afford one of these rooms, but we can still make use of the hotel's beautiful facilities

Such as the sunroom which has lovely views of the lake

and the restaurant

What a shame about the road closures. I am glad though that you have sorted out alternatives, its good that you found out now instead of once you were there. Cabin looks good. Sitting there looking out at the lake would be heaven.

Believe it or not, whilst I am sorry about the road closures, I really think it's worked in your favour. Congratulations and well done on scoring the en-suite accommodation!

You're right, it is good to find out about it sooner rather than later. I can only imagine my distress if we drove up to that road and found it closed. The advantages of being a planner I suppose.

I am always shocked by the amount of posts I read on Trip Advisor from people who book their flights and then do their research. Like the people who book flights to Yellowstone in April only to discover later online that April is still winter and pretty much nothing in the park is open.

Thanks PIO :goodvibes

I agree that everything may have actually worked out for the better.

Yaay for finding out early and sorting things out - I agree how does anyone go anywhere without research! Does sound like ou have scored bonuses with the revised plans which is great. Hoping you see lots of wildlife and not too much of the snow and ice.
