The price of Vacation

Our family of three stayed for 15 days back in 2012, 8 nights at pop, 6 nights off-site. Total spent was about $4800. Helps that we are within driving distance and our offsite hotel stay averaged $42 a night once we applied our reward points, and rewards program discounts.

The cost of vacation isn't that for us, so it's not just vacation. It's the cost of vacation *for your family*. Part of the deal when you're fortunate enough to have a larger family! If we get that lucky (time is ticking) it'll be part of our deal too...just goes with the territory.

And doing two sets of parks will always increase the cost substantially, because both places front-load their tickets. If you can try to plan out your next vacation...if it is to Orlando and falls inside of 365 days from the first day in a park, consider APs. Will be more of a cost now, but less overall. But that's a big "if". If we had 2 more in our family we wouldn't be able to go anywhere near as often as we currently can, even with all the air miles and lower cost hotel nights from DH being gone nearly half the year.

Seriously ... I think some of y'all are doing this wrong. :lmao:

....

I don't understand how some of you that go regularly haven't joined DVC yet. Smartest decision we ever made. :thumbsup2

:rotfl2:

And I agree.

And that's despite financing our DVC.

Rob, if you haven't been to Universal yet, may I recommend budgeting some "just in case" money for Uni APs? They are SO much cheaper than WDW's, and so far the renewal price has been incredibly easy to deal with. If you guys love it (assuming you haven't been there), I really recommend thinking about it.

Of course, my next suggestion will be to look into the magical (er, mummy-dust-filled) world of staying onsite at Universal... ;)

You're staying at a hotel for $58 per night????

The poster said "renting a friends timeshare "getaway" provided though one of the exchanges". So heck yah it can be that cheap.

However we are really staying 15 days and going to Sea World and US/IOA.
We are staying at Hilton Garden Inn 2 nights and Portofino for another 4 nights. Our total for our entire stay: $8248...or $4124 per person.

Uggghhhh! Why did I just do that!

Unless you booked a package at Universal, be sure you're looking here for Portofino rates. Prices can drop, and if you book room-only you can easily change the rate. Don't forget to throw "APH" into the code field to SEE if there's an AP rate offered during your dates at the time you're checking; if there is, see if the total (that rate plus one person upgrading to an AP) makes sense compared to the current rate and whatever tickets you're getting. :)

As most people go for two weeks I would look into if the UK ultimate tickets work out cheaper. Also we have the free ddp offer which just started which includes 35% off old key west.

It costs us $10,000 just to arrive in Orlando for the 5 of us (and the youngest os still a lap child)

Family of four. We stayed at Pop for two weeks June, 2010. Ten day hoppers with wp&m. Driving down. Total cost was $6,000. We did a lot of eating from the room (breakfast and one picnic-style meal each day). The other meal each day was split between sit-down and counter service.

Honestly, given price increases, the extra person, and I'm assuming more meals outside the hotel, that sounds about right.

If it's a hardship, I recommend more meals from your room. It's really not a problem. You could save a ton of money. If it's just that the number sounds bad? I'd let it go, and enjoy your awesome two weeks. Sounds lovely to me! :yay:

Just me and dd6 were spending 3k including airfare for 5 days 4 nights staying at a deluxe. Disney is expensive in July 2015 were staying off site for free. Park tickets, parking & rental car alone will be 2k for our family of 6. Airfare is free with points, as well as condo family member timeshare. We plan to try to eat 2 meals a day at condo.

Sounds about right.

We're doing 2 weeks at Disney and Universal staying offsite for 4.

Our budgeted total is about $8500 with free airfare. That includes many meals at home.

I looked back on our 2012 trip and we spent right at $925 for food and souvenirs for 4 people staying offsite for 8 days, plus 1.5 days driving in each direction. $4k (even with 5 people and more days) just sounds really high unless you're just throwing caution to the wind. And that's fine if that's your choice, but if the $ spent bothers you, it CAN be done a lot cheaper.

We usually spend about $1,000 per person for an average one-week vacation. If we do a more upscale/fancier vacation or one that has extras then that goes up to $1,500 per person.

We are there for 9 days, 8 nights and we have 6 day park hoppers, quick service dining and got free 1 day water park tickets. We're staying at AOA in a fam suite because we have four kids. We are also flying from Kansas City. Our arrival and departure days we didn't get tickets for, and one day will be a waterpark/downtown Disney day

Our trip is costing us just under $8000 including airfare! 5 of us are considered Disney adults, and the youngest is 8. It's highly unlikely we will be able to afford taking the whole family again lol

If it were me staying off-site for 2 weeks I'd be cutting my meal/spending budget in half. We aren't big souvenir people and I would probably do most meals at the rental house so that would help alot. If you like to shop and eat out that probably wouldn't be possible.
I don't think your overall cost for a 2 week vacation for 5 is bad at all, our last trip to WDW (8 days) was around $7000 but that did include airfare for the 5 of us.

We're staying for 5 days. Two adults staying at POR for 5 nights, 5 day MYW base tickets, and airfare costs us $2260. We are hoping for free dining, but will bring about $1500 spending money.

I agree with all the posters saying your meal budget is too high. If I was going to rent a house, I would be planning some meals there. $4,000 seems way too much for meals and souvies for 2 weeks.

We are renting a condo from VRBO.com that is 3bed/3bath for $500 per week. It is only 2.5 miles from disney!! I would look at the rental house situation again :/

Count me in on agreeing with this. I have a family of 3 and the longest trip we have taken was 10 days and my son was still free admission then, but I also pay for everything on my own so I have to be careful. I really don’t know if you need $4,000 for spending money and food when you have a house where you can cook at least one meal a day and a vehicle so that you can drive wherever you want to get groceries. I'd re-evaluate a couple of things, the first being the amount of souvenir money each person is getting.
I agree also. Cook breakfast and dinner in your house and pack sandwiches for lunch most days and you can cut this by a lot. You may be able to find a house that is less. Another way to save is to only do universal or only Disney. Doing both costs much more than extending days on each.

My DH really needs to appreciate my budget vacation planning. He gets nervous when our family of five spends $5,000 for a theme park and/or cruise vacation or a three-week cross-country adventure. :rotfl2: We did MK, Islands of Adventure onsite, and a five-day cruise with horseback riding on the beach for under $5,000. We spend at most $100/day on food, even at theme parks, with cereal for breakfast, two counter service meals, and an ice cream treat. I know that we've never spent close to $2,000/week on food and extras. Even I would be :scared: if we spent that much. But, clearly everyone's vacation budget is different. I have friends who would faint at the amount my family spends. And we take multiple vacations per year, so we have to keep the price down. If this is your only vacation of the year, under $10,000 isn't terrible.

Absolutely everyone has their own "way" to vacation. We do the AP version where we get 2 major vacations within the 365 days of the AP and then wait until the 3rd year to buy a new AP and do it again. Last year, our vacation was in late June and we bought the AP's. This year it will be early June. Things just worked out that last year was 13 days and this year will only be 8 days (stupid snow days off of school!) We also managed to do a mini-vacation of 5 days in January since we had the AP's. - Note that this is a "risk" of having APs, we almost always end up squeezing an extra trip in when we have them! :thumbsup2

Our 26 park days end up costing $23/day for tickets.

The breakdown budget for our 8 night trip for 3 in June:

Hotel: $1060 - Pop with AP or VISA discounts
Food: $1000 - Will use $400 Disney Visa rewards toward this.
Park tickets: $552 (3 people, prorated AP's)
Airfare: $825 - but we are actually using frequent flyer points, so no cash spent

Food is based on past experience. We tend to mostly stick with CS. We have 4 TS planned over the 8 days and rarely eat appetizers/dessert and no alcohol. We have $400 in Disney Visa rewards, so that will actually be only $600 out of pocket. We rarely buy souvenirs - probably a result of regularly visiting the park for decades. We could probably cut food down more if we ate more out of our room, but our budget isn't that tight so we don't bother.

Sometimes we will spend more on hotel, but since we tend to spend far more time in the parks than at our resort we don't see much point paying for deluxe or even moderate.

Vacation cost: approximately $3500 - actual out-of-pocket cost around $2200 (per person, per day: $145 / $92)

Someone who only visits occasionally, buys 5 day tickets, stays at Deluxe resorts and eats TS meals every day will spend far more than we do. For some that is a "better' vacation, but for us it isn't at all what we would enjoy. I don't WANT a TS meal every day. We did free dining once and said never again! We felt like we HAD to eat all those meals to be getting our money's worth (had to pay full price for the hotel, so not really ~free dining) and by the end of the trip I was totally sick of eating so much and hated all the time taken up by TS restaurants. For other people, those meals are a big part of the trip and they love it.

Thanks for the suggestion. Honestly, we're Disney fans through and through, and while we love the Harry Potter stuff at Universal, my wife absolutely loathes the place. She tolerates it for Harry Potter, but I had a hell of a time getting her on anything else in the park. She enjoyed the rides we went on, but she wouldn't even consider the Hulk Coaster or Rip Ride Rockit. She also had a very negative experience with one of the staff at the restaurant in Hogsmeade. My wife asked for a straw, and had one thrown at her. I love my wife dearly, but she doesn't let things go ... and she'll bring that up frequently. So yeah ... getting her buy-off on AP's to Universal would NEVER happen. :rotfl:

Even if none of that were a factor, we're from the west coast, and we only have enough DVC points to get us there about every other year. I had to get really creative with our meager point allotment to get us two trips in seven months, and given that we already have our severely discounted PAPs for Disney, I don't see us getting our money's worth with the Universal ones.

Maybe when the Wizarding World opens up at the Hollywood one ... ;)

Doesn't seem completely insane to me. Trips including Universal as well are always more expensive than just Disney too.

Wow, interesting and scary thread:).
Let's see. We're two adults, 54 & 63. Have been going to Disney forever. This time, after at least 20+ years, we're heading to the Dark Side first.

November, 2014.
$1300.00- 3 days at Portofino Bay Hotel, Deluxe Queen, Bay View, with taxes.
$360.00 3 day park to park pass.
Figuring $150.00 per day for meals/cocktails.
Roughly $2200, including limo ride from airport.

$4200- 5 nights Grand Floridian, Outer Building, Theme Park View, includes 5 day MYW, park hopper tickets. We don't do FD, as we're grazers.
Figuring at least $150.00 per day meals/cocktails.

Haven't priced SW air yet but last year it was roughly $750-800 round trip for two.
So...yikes....$9,000 is a fair guess.

Hell, it's a vacation! We budget for it and don't look back.
We're thankful that we can afford it and this will be the last time I itemize :thumbsup2.
