Well, I just spoke with CM about latest poly policy and thru 9/20 all lagoon view rooms are going to be in smoking optional buildings. That means there could/will be smoke all around you even if you choose not to smoke. For health reasons(dw with asthma) we are going to switch to garden view. What a disappointment. Given that DW is a family destination and given that sooo many kids have asthma these days, what is management thinking? Could this possibly be a sound business decision? The CM told me to e-mail my feelings to wdw.guest.communications.@disneyworld.com and they will repsond.:(

What a bad decision!!!!!!!! I can't believe that they told you ALL lagoon view rooms will be smoking optional! I know Tikiman posted about *some* rooms being smoking optional with refurb going on, but to make ALL lagoon view rooms that way!??!!??!?!?!

I would NEVER stay in a room that even had a hint of smoke in it. It makes me nauseous plus my kids would have a fit.

Why can't they make an equal amount of garden view and lagoon view rooms smoking optional so that a good portion of the visiting population isn't shut out of those lagoon views?

Whose bright idea was this snafu?

I know you were looking forward to that lagoon view, but enjoy the garden view and take a nightly stroll on the beach to get your views of the castle in. It won't be the same, but hopefully you will still be able to enjoy your stay.

Do write to Disney and tell them about your disappointment. I hope everyone travelling to the Polynesian during this timeframe calls or e-mails and makes a huge stink about it.

I think the OP said/meant that all LV rooms will be in smoking optional BUILDINGS, not that all LV rooms will be smoking optional.

What this means is that the hallways could possibly smell of smoke, and that there might be more people smoking outside on balconies/patios (where they can smoke anyway). the smoking rooms are grouped together, so it's also possible to be very far away from any smoke.

I can understand needing to be in a non-smoking building. I hope you have a wonderful trip anyway!

Lets start off by saying that unfortunately some of the CM’s at the Polynesian give out inaccurate information (I have heard it many times) but I agree with Gillian. They probably meant that all lagoon view longhouses will be smoking optional (meaning they will have mixed rooms. As of my discussion with management last week the only smoking optional lagoon view rooms are the top floor of Tuvalu, Hawaii (when it opens back up) and half of the lower floors of Tahiti. Don’t blame this decision on the Polynesian. The whole reason the rooms were added was due to complaints by smokers that there were not enough lagoon view and garden view rooms that were smoking optional. They are just trying to fit the need of the people who are paying for the rooms. Not that I like it any more than anyone else but I can’t say I blame them.

A few years back we stayed in Tuvalu and could smell smoke every time we were on our deck even though we had a non-smoking room. It probably wafted around the balcony area.

We just returned from a non-Disney vacation in San Diego and stayed at a non-smoking resort... very nice. Calif. is very stringent on their smoking laws, at Sea World they made non-smoking announcements throughout the park!

I'm glad they did it. I would enjoy sitting out on the patio in the evening, enjoying a nice cigar while watching the fireworks!

Oh don't be such a stinker, although I suppose since you'll be smoking a cigar you can't possibly help it! Surely you realize your cigar smoke won't stay on your patio. If my wife, who has asthma, or my mother-in-law, who carts around her oxygen, were next door to you while you were indulging in your passion they would have difficulty breathing. That can't possibly be your intention, could it? Or do you just not think about the people around you? Nah, that just isn't the Disney way!

Hey, if BrianD is in a smoking room (which I think is what he's talking about), he can smoke on his patio, no matter how much it smells. :)

It's difficult to balance the different needs of your guests, but if someone is in a smoking optional room, they paid to be able to smoke there.

lucysdad- I don't blame you for being upset about a possible change in your room location, I would be too. I do agree though that if someone has paid for a smoking room, they are probably entitiled to smoke there. I don't think Bryan D is setting out to cause a problem but rather use his room as it is described. I do think that it's a great thing that we are now seeing more smoke-free cruises and hotels, especially now that more people have respiratory problems. Threehearts

Hi - I appreciate the rights of smokers but unfortunately I cannot breath when I am around smoke. I have asthma and never go anyplace without my nebulizer and other medication. We were recently at the AKL Disney and the people next door were constantly smoking on their balcony. Unfortunatly, I could not enjoy my balcony because of this. Since smoke is a health issue to many people, I wish Disney would make the balcony area non smoking unless the entire building is a smoking building.

You know Sherry, I think the idea of a whole building being smoking is an excellent one. I can imagine how disappointing it must have been at the AKL not to be outside. Were you on a non-smoking or smoking optional floor? How do they arrange the sm. opt. and no smoking rooms? Threehearts

I dont know if they have non smoking flooks at AKL. We were on the zebra trail on the 5th floor. We were saying concierge and I asked the conciege about smoking on the balcony because I had heard that they did not allow balcony smoking on savannah side because of animals. I was told that anyone can smoke on balcony even if the room itself is nonsmoking including savannah view. They also offered to move me but I did not want the hassle of repacking and then the same thing could happen again anyway. I think that the balcony of a non smoking room should also be non smoking and then disney could have smoke optional floors/wings or buildings. That should allow everyone to be happy.

Disney does have smoking optional sections or buildings. Actually, that's part of the problem now at the Polynesian. Some of the buildings that were non-smoking are being switched over to part smoking & part non-smoking. The smoking rooms are in one section though.

I know at AKL there are sections that are smoking optional. We decided to take one of these rooms on our last trip, even though we don't smoke. The room and the balcony were fine, but the hallway leading to our room smelled like stale smoke.

I'm sorry this is such a problem for everyone.

Sorry, it doesn't matter if the floor is non-smoking We were at the BWI and in our alcove the 3 rooms were non-smoking, the person next to us decided to smoke on her balcony and therefore we had to keep our doors shut. She still went in her room to puff, just kept her ashtray out side. Needless to say the whole alcove smelled of smoke.

My DS has special needs and this was a real problem.

Knowing the policy about smokers, I bought myself a couple of cans of Lysol and sprayed it in her direction everytime she decided to smoke and I also sprayed the alcove.

She soon stopped. I understand about everyone's rights and I just decided to exercise my right to spray Lysol, and lot's of it. Fortunately it worked, the Lysol wouldn't have helped DS either but at least it stopped the smoking.
