The point is moot!

In this case, it may be that they are actually saying the contraction "should've". I say this all of the time, and it sounds just like "should of". Of course, if it's written that way, that's another story. ;)
I've seen should of and could of typed on this board so many times, I could scream.

I just saw something else on another thread that makes me nuts, and I've seen it on many, many other threads as well. This isn't misuse of a word, but I've seen so many posters use 100$ instead of $100, it just baffles me. And the majority of these posters are located in the US. :confused3

I learned a long time ago that people do not like to be called out on their mistakes. Waaaaaay back when I was 8 and in the 3rd grade, I had a miserable old bat of a teacher with horrible spelling skills. I used to point out her spelling & grammar errors to her -- y'know, to try to help her. She didn't much like that and made it clear she didn't like me very much either. It was a hard year for me. At the end of the year, I left school a month or so early because my family moved. My teacher had the class prepare a book for me, with everyone making a page. On the teacher's page, she wrote the following poem:

"It is the duty of the student
Without exception to be prudent
If smarter than the teacher, tact
Demands that he conceals the fact. "- Edward Anthony

Except she changed the "he" to a "she."

I have to admit, I always thought it was empathetic (like sympathetic).

The only empathic person I know is Troi. (geek check)

Yep.

I just thought of one I've heard a lot. Warsh instead of wash.

If you are unsure, there are plenty of easily accessible "websights" to check your usage!!!!!
(Now how can that be a typo, it's longer to type?)
Which reminds me. This month our HOA newsletter talks about "sighting" people for letting their grass grow too long etc. See them first then cite them!

Oh, but the best one is "waiting with baited breath"

It's "bated breath" unless you plan to catch fish with it.

That one always makes me laugh!

I say my collies wait with "baited breath" b/c their breath is so horrible sometimes, but that is just a joke between DH & I.

I've got two, the first happens to be my biggest annoyance and it's EVERYWHERE!!!

1. ATM Machine inside
Please people, what do you think ATM stands for?

2. Congradulations.
Time to check that spelling.

Yes. You are a geek. Granted I guess that makes me a geek since I know who you're talking about but I lose geek points because I would never make such a reference.

That would be "joke between DH and me" since we are correcting grammar.

We have the Mid America Center nearby. We call it the MAC but many people call it the MAC center.

You are EAGER to get started, not anxious to get started! That one drives me crazy.

Also- the word temperature used instead of fever! I'm a nurse, and other nurses do this all the time! Everyone has a temp, you are commenting/inquiring about the fever!

I thought of another one. It really annoys me when people modify unique. Unique is an absolute. Something can't be very unique. It is either unique or not, which brings me to another annoyance: when people use unique incorrectly, such as "That name is unique." Unless the name is something like Joihohgohi8ewhon, it is not unique. It may be unusual or uncommon, but it is not unique.

:faint:
The speech pathologist that I worked with years ago gave a presentation to the staff and used "axe" instead of "ask" and actually said, . . .

Wait for it. . . .

"psgetti" for "spaghetti"

Yesterday, I overheard a conversation when I was checking out at the grocery store. The checker told the customer in front of me that she didn't want her daughter to be placed in Special Ed because of the "astigmatism" that goes along with it. :lmao:

I'm pretty sure she meant "stigma". Either that or eye doctors all across America are forming lines at SpEd classroom doors!

A local one: we have a bank here that uses the name UMB Bank in their advertising.

UMB = United Missouri Bank

so ...

United Missouri Bank Bank? :confused3

That reminds me of my DD4's favorite joke (or is it a riddle?)...
How do you catch a unique rabbit?
Unique up on it!
How do you catch a tame rabbit?
Tame way, unique up on it!

Cracks her up every time.

AAAAARRRRGGGGHHHHH!! That one drives me bananas every time I see it!

I just saw this one on another board:

then we had to through it a way

A double whammy! "Through" instead of "throw," and "a way" instead of "away."

Oooh, I just spotted another one that I see all the time. This one drives me crazy but it makes me laugh too:

his tear duct became scared

Really? What was it scared of? I'm pretty sure this was supposed to say "scarred."
