The Perils of Printed Guidebooks: Outdated Info in the Unofficial Guide to DLR

There was a thread here in the last week or two from someone asking about guidebooks to DLR. If I had to recommend one it would be the Unofficial Guide to DLR 2010 by Sehlinger. I think the specific question was more about touring plans in the UG.

In the thread we discussed the issue of outdated information. Today I was looking for some parking info at DLR and came across this link from the UG through Google books that had incorrect information on page 31.

Here is an excerpt from the UG 2010:

DISNEYLAND PARKING

A secondary parking lot is the Timon lot off Harbor Boulevard on the east side of Disneyland Resort. Timon can be reached by taking Harbor Boulevard south from I-5. Much more convenient than the main garage, Timon is the preferred lot of locals....

In fact the Timon lot was closed on July 6, 2009 to make way for Cars Land construction. See this MiceChat article for example.

Some things that change slowly can be addressed well by printed guide books. But many things change too quickly for guidebooks to address.

To get the latest information you need to use online resources such as DIS.

I currently have the 2009 DLR UG, and I have found many outdated items in it. I am currently on the waiting list at the library to check out the 2010 edition, and will probably buy the 2011 edition when it comes out in Aug. Why, you ask, do I keep reading it if I know sooo much of it is outdated, not to mention just mistakes I have found? Well, I can't be at the computer reading forums all the time (though I try ).

I just love reading about Disney. Even though I have been many times, I just love reading the ride and restaurant reviews, among other stuff. I am just sort of obsessed with Disney and love to read anything I can on it.

But this is definitly the place to get a question answered if you have one. I have asked a couple and have received wonderful, thorough responses. I plan to ask a lot more before my trip in November also.

I'm with you wdwfan22...I have been known to buy guidebooks to read on the plane...on the way home...I like to see if I agree with the reviews/information...I don't like to read about the attractions ahead of time because I want to be surprised the first time I ride/see them!

For $12, the Unofficial Guide has some value for total "newbs," although it seems to be written for people who have never set foot in a theme park in their entire lives.

IMO they've done a better job with the UG 2010 edition than they did with the '07, '08, or '09.

But I agree, Fleeting Pixels are better than Dead Trees.

Another shortcoming of the Unofficial Guide to DL... it doesn't mention RideMax.
