Sister (Samantha) 18
Mum (Morna) (not allowed to say)
Dad (Sam) returned to DLP for the first time since 1994 and turned 64 on the trip

Day 1 – Monday 4th June 2012

I was travelling to Paris from London where I’d been for a few days, and my parents and sister were travelling from Glasgow. They had no hitches – I had a bit of drama with the Heathrow Express being cancelled, but managed to share a taxi with some randoms and made it there on time.
I had to kill a long, excited 2.5 hours by myself in Charles de Gaulle airport waiting for them to land – I do not recommend this. Don’t think I’ve ever checked the clock so often! But we were reunited soon enough and could all be excited together.
TGV worked a treat as ever – I love getting to DLP so quickly!
DSCN0097.jpg

We dashed to Sequoia Lodge in pretty heavy rain, cursing our optimistic choices of footwear. There wasn’t a long queue to check in, and there was no problem at all to add my sister and I to the room booking by paying the room taxes. This was a relief, even though I knew it had worked for others. We got VIP breakfast passes as it was my dad’s birthday, and our room was ready.
We were delighted to find these treats in our lovely big room. It was quite a trek from the main doors but we were really happy with it nonetheless.

After a quick freshen up we were starving and decided to stop at Earl of Sandwich. We’d never eaten here before but were really impressed with the service and quality. Mum had a kids meal of pizza sandwich and fruit (lol) and we all had Hawaiian BBQ mmm
DSCN0105.jpg

But this was no time to hang around, we had a park to get to!
The rain was going off as we scurried through the Village, and we were surprised at the lack of people since we’d been expecting big bank holiday crowds. There was no queue at the ticket desk and we paid for our two new Dream APs straight away (with shareholder discount). A few minutes later we were home!
DSCN0110.jpg

We love all the 20th Anniversary décor, its so tasteful especially in comparison with previous years. I know some people think all the gold is too much, but I thought it made the entrance even more magical.
We needed to pick up our real APs but not before we’d explored the park a little. We headed to BTM first (everyone’s favourite) to pick up fastpasses for later. Even inside the park, the crowd levels were much lower than we’d anticipated. After a wander through Adventure Isle we had our first ride of the trip on Pirates – which my dad claims to have no memory of from 1994 but he loved it!

DSCN0111.jpg

I couldn’t wait much longer for my real AP so we headed back to the AP office. The whole process only took about minutes as there was nobody else waiting, which was great – we’d set aside half an hour for this, unsure how long it might take.
I love my new AP!
DSCN0112.jpg

As I’ve mentioned in my highs and lows, I used the Disneyland Paris iPhone app loads during this trip to check queue times. Once again, I’d really recommend it, now that I’ve gotten used to checking, I don’t think I’d go without it on future trips. It really helps you make the most of the day. Space Mountain was showing a 5 minute wait so my dad, sister and I went on that. My dad remembered it from when it was mission 1…he wasn’t really prepared for the raucous ride that is mission 2! We were all a bit rattled afterwards, but that was our first taste of adrenaline for the week, and there was a lot more to come. My mum prefers to people watch and shop while we go off thrill seeking!
Just as my mum refuses to accompany us on Space Mountain, my dad refuses to participate in IASW – so we went on that with mum next.

DSCN0116.jpg

It was nearly time for our 5pm reservation at Walts, so we went through the castle and right down the middle of Main St, USA. There was a reasonable queue at Walts, all of whom had booked, but the host was very friendly and helping keep the kids entertained. We were seated by 5.15….some of the waiting staff upstairs seemed very flustered but ours was lovely.
We just love the relaxing surroundings in Walts, and a free aperitif with the APs didn’t hurt either. They gave us these kirs as soon as we showed our passes in Walts, but in every other restaurant we were told that only soft drinks are now available with the 20th anniversary APs (boo). Anyway, I enjoyed both of the kirs which taste identical to a certain Glaswegian tonic wine that rhymes with “truckblast” and which I’ve obviously never tried aherm
DSCN0117.jpg

Food photo time! I had the spiced cod – this was amazingly soft and the spices were really unusual.
IMG_1430.jpg

Mum had chicken, and the other two had steaks.
IMG_1429.jpg

DSCN0120.jpg

For dessert dad had the cheesecake, Sami and I shared a trio of desserts and mum had her favourite Café Gourmand. Big thumbs up all round for the food, as ever.
DSCN0123.jpg

The parade was just about to start as we rolled ourselves down the stairs from Walts, but even that wasn’t too busy. We’re lucky to be a tall bunch so able to see even if we can’t get right to the front.
Of course we enjoyed the parade, especially the dancers on wheels, but it doesn’t have the same magic as the previous one. It’s been mentioned a lot on here, but the song just doesn’t go anywhere and lacks the emotional impact of Just Like We Dreamed It. It’s crying out for a modulation!
We must be crazy but after the parade we went back on Space Mountain, since it was still only showing a 5 minute wait. This was a grave error after such rich food, and we decided to head back to the hotel and rest afterwards!
After a couple of hours in the hotel freshening up and unpacking, we all felt good as new and ready to head back to the park and see Dreams for the first time. First things first, we had fastpasses for BTM – somehow I always seem to forget just how much fun this is. This is the “biggest” ride that mum will go on, so it was great to all be able to do it together. Dad had definitely forgotten how good it was, he roared with laughter the whole way around.
DSCN0134.jpg

While mum and Sami shopped in Frontierland, Dad and I visited the Phantom Manor – along with just 4 other people. Though this ride is well made, it will never be a favourite of mine. Am I missing something? I don’t really get the story.

It was 10.30 by then and time to find a spot for Dreams. We went via the sweet shop for the first of many (for me) bits of vanilla fudge. I’m properly addicted to it, might need to ask someone who’s going soon to post me some.
We stood just in line with Caseys, right in the middle of Main St, so reasonably far back but with a good central view and as I said, we’re tall, we didn’t miss anything! It’s really not worth staking out hours in advance for Dreams, you can see it everywhere and the crowds were spread out so you could easily find a space up to a few minutes before.

We haven’t got any photos of Dreams because we figured there are plenty of them out there, and we’d rather watch it than try to take our own.
I’m seldom at a loss for words, but I am when it comes to Dreams. You need to see it for yourself – it’s nothing short of the best thing I have ever seen. I’m so glad that I hadn’t watched it online beforehand, because I didn’t really know what to expect.
I don’t want to give anything away, but I cried twice (at the same points, all three times I saw it) and on this first night was literally speechless, I could feel my jaw hanging open.

We were all buzzing about how incredible it was the whole way back to the hotel, and stopped in at the Redwood bar for a cocktail before bed.

Great day!

Lovely for you all to be there together.

Living it up with the buckie :rotfl:

A great first day :goodvibes We really enjoyed our meal in Walts too:goodvibes

YAY!!!! You've started your TR!!!

I've been so excited about this :goodvibes and it isn't disappointing at all! I cannot believe all that you did on your first day, and you must have been absolutely exhausted from your long morning of travelling too!!! Go girl!!! :woohoo:

I am loving hearing it from your Dad's impressions as it's been so long since he was last in the magic! It's so lovely to read :cloud9:

As for Dreams... I bet I know where you cried... only because we did as well... every single night! :rotfl:

Can't wait to read the rest xxxx

Yay - TR time!!! :cool1:

Can I congratulate you for waiting two and a half hours at the airport for your family rather than giving in to the magnetic pull of Disney! You deserve a medal!! :thumbsup2

Great first day - glad to see that you got a refurbed room for your stay!

Ha ha, Walts + BTM = :crazy2: !!! :rotfl2:

Bring on Day 2!!!

Fab first day! I soooo cant wait to see dreams! Cant wait to read more of your tr! :goodvibes

Great first family day Lisa :goodvibes.

Oooh I cried twice per show too, I wonder if we were all crying at the same bits?

I totally agree with you about seeing Dreams, nothing you see on photos or video compares with being there and seeing it in the flesh, I just kept thinking I couldn't believe I was seeing something so completely wonderful :cloud9:. Dreams is an epic high, in my opinion.

Sorry for the delay in writing my trip report, it’s been a crazy week back at work! I’d like to return to the magic please, away from the stresses of real life.

Anyway, on to…

Day 2 – Tuesday 5th June

We decided (well, the others decided) that since we’d have the VIP fastpass all day, there wasn’t much reason to rush out for EMH. So we headed down for breakfast around 8.30am – the queues were huge but moved quickly. We didn’t realise until we were told on the Wednesday that our VIP Breakfast passes meant we didn’t have to queue at all – doh. Anyway, we spotted the sign advertising hot breakfast items at an extra cost, so Dad ordered bacon and sausages for 3E 90 – bargain. We all enjoyed the buffet, and it wasn’t as much of a rabble as I’d feared.
After breakfast, I hurried towards Salon Mickey – enough with the leisurely morning when there was a VIP Fastpass waiting for us! I’d never seen Salon Mickey so busy, there was no food left and everyone appeared to be picking up fastpasses. Sadly there was no space to spend time there, so we just picked up the Fastpass and headed to the Studios.

DSCN0136.jpg

A swing by Crush told us that the wait was already an hour, and we resolved to do it later in the week. Time for us to make use of our privilege by riding Tower of Terror! We walked straight on, as there weren’t any normal FP users yet. My dad LOVES ToT! He has this big booming laugh and he laughed hysterically every time we went on this.
Afterwards, my sister and I headed for RC Racer, which had no queue, but it broke down as we were in the loading bit ready to go on, and everyone was ushered out. Boo! Dad wasn’t up for RC anyway, he thought it would “gie him a funny belly”.
More fastpassing? Ok then, RnRC next for all 3 of us! In case you’re wondering, Mum was happily wandering around, drinking coffee etc while all this was going on. She claims she likes absorbing the atmosphere.
RnRC was on fantastic form – though I do feel it’s a bit pedestrian once you get over the initial launch. There were some silly hats in the RnRC shop:
DSCN0139.jpg

DSCN0140.jpg

And some more silliness to be had back outside:
DSCN0141.jpg

Since Mum had been so patient, it was high time we went back on BTM – the one fastpass ride she enjoys. So we trooped back to the main park and headed straight for it. Since we had our pass, we also rode Buzz and Peter Pan – Dad wasn’t overly impressed with either. Possibly something to do with the fact that he got the worst score on Buzz.
IMG_1434.jpg

We all wanted to try Toad Hall for lunch, and it opened its doors just as we got there so we were first in the queue. We were really impressed with the quality of the food, and the themeing of the restaurant. I had a chicken burger, Mum had salad and the other two had the classic fish and chips.
Loved getting AP discount on counter service for the first time!
DSCN0147.jpg

How fantastic is this photo – total accident!
DSCN0149.jpg

As we sauntered around Fantasyland with full bellies afterwards, we had our one and only random character spot of the trip! Chip and Dale heading off for their rest, but one didn’t want to go and hid from the CM in the woods. The small crowd watching loved it – its such a shame there’s not more ad hoc character activity like this:
DSCN0154.jpg

DSCN0157.jpg

We then spotted Rapunzel on her way to the Princess Pavillion….the queues for which were disgraceful throughout our stay. We reckoned if we had wee girls who wanted to see princesses we’d rather stomach the cost of Auberge than spend half a day waiting in a huge queue :S
DSCN0160.jpg

We watched the characters dancing on the psychedelic train (my eyes!)
DSCN0167.jpg

then Dad and I went to explore Nautilus while the other two went shopping. I’d never been in here because sister is terrified of squid. Dad and I thought it was fun, great detail, but tragically empty.
Back to BTM after this (why not, we’ve got our VIP Fastpass) We queued about ten minutes in the fastpass lane but there were two hilarious little boys dancing in front of us, keeping everyone entertained.
DSCN0145.jpg

It was roasting by this point! (hurrah)
DSCN0170.jpg

We rode Indy (no wait with our FP as normal FP weren’t available), then explored the Treehouse and the beautifully refurbed Pirate Ship.
DSCN0186.jpg

Then went on BTM again! (yes, there were complaints of sore feet by this point, but nobody ever said VIP fastpass day would be painless)
Back to Discoveryland for Star Tours and Space Mountain. After this second SM ride, Dad declared he was done with it. Too scary for him, bless.

Tired yet? Not quite – back to the Studios to abuse the Fastpass some more. The 3 of us rode ToT again before all watching Stars n Cars together. Another quick go on RnRC, then we really did need a rest. We headed back to the hotel, via King Ludwigs for Happy Hour.
DSCN0193.jpg

We had about an hour to rest and change before heading back to the park for our booking at Blue Lagoon.
Our waiter Alex was lovely but extremely nervous – we think it must have been his first night or near enough, and his English wasn’t very good. He had a lot of tables to look after, and kept making mistakes and getting stressed out. I had to get the attention of Gregory who had served us in previous years, to bring knives for our butter, glasses for our water, and to fix our drinks order. He was super apologetic and made a point of doting on our table for the rest of the night, even though we weren’t angry at all. I was really glad to see that rather than give young Alex into trouble, he appeared to take him under his wing for the rest of the night, encouraging him and showing him how to do things. The younger boy relaxed and was lovely with us throughout the evening. Good teamwork and management!
Anyway, you want more food photos, right? I had the best starter EVER, pressed crab with curry toast and peppers. Then surf n turf – veal medallions and a half lobster. WOW. One of my favourite meals ever, not just at Disney. I love the Blue Lagoon, but most of you already knew that.
DSCN0199.jpg

Mum had sea bream (with a face, but very tasty), Sami had chicken columbo (now on skewers) and Dad had steak. Everybody loved it.
DSCN0203.jpg

DSCN0202.jpg

DSCN0201.jpg

The others had desserts – Flaming Bomb, Coconut sundae and Crème Brulee, but there was no chance of this for me after what was essentially two mains.
DSCN0210.jpg

Oh, and I got quite drunk on not-buckfast and wine, layered on top of our earlier happy hour beers…
DSCN0198.jpg

DSCN0211.jpg

When we were about to leave Dad announced that it was pouring and there was much ado putting on rainmacs etc….turned out to be the waterfall he’d heard!
Mum and dad went to get a spot for Dreams while Sami and I went on BTM twice more with the VIP Fastpass – right at the front of the train, in the dark, really pretty drunk. Surreal and slightly nerve wracking if I’m honest. Less wine next time, maybe.
Dreams was just as spectacular the second time around, though we had a better view nearer to the front and I caught all of the detail this time around.

And that, dear DISers, is what you call making the most of a day!

Now THAT is most certainly making the most of a day! :thumbsup2 Can't believe you got so much done in one day.. the joys of not having a 5 yr old little legs with you! :rotfl2:

Just read this and loving every minute of it :thumbsup2

I love that your Dad's gone for a birthday trip after such a long absence :goodvibes you can see from all your faces what fun you're having.

And please thank your Mum for covering the face up in her food photo! :flower3:

I'm exhausted just reading about your day!!!

Has your Mum lost weight Lisa? I love her dress she's wearing to Blue Lagoon. I love that she has covered the fish head up, I can't bear them looking at me either!! :rotfl2:

Fab day :goodvibes

Great day Lisa!

Having that VIP FP really makes you keen to keep going and going and going........ You just can't sit down knowing that you could be on BTM :lmao:

Love you and your sis's disney t-shirts too :thumbsup2

Wow what a fab day - we were the same on our FP day but we had a 4 yr old and 7 yr old to contend with so little legs! We ended up hiring a pushchair for my 7 year old so we could get about quicker :lmao: (it was free with our Dream APs though!).

I loved the Blue Lagoon too - first time we've eaten here and it won't be the last if I can help it. DH might take a little more persuading as he was sick that night after our meal :confused3....

I look forward to hearing more :thumbsup2

Yes she has lost weight, she was dietting like crazy before the holiday and is delighted not to have put any back on whilst there... I think we did enough running around to burn off the tons of food we ate! She's delighted that you noticed :woohoo:

Another great day, you certainly made the most of those VIP passes. I love the picture of your dad in his hat. :goodvibes

Good call covering the head of the fish.....who wants to have the thing you're tucking into looking back at you?! :thumbsup2:rotfl2:

Great TR so far!! :cool1:

I'm ashamed - I've been disgracefully neglectful in my trip reporting, and in visiting the DIS generally. Work and gigging have been mental for the month since we got back, but no more excuses! I've finally got some time this weekend, so i WILL finish my trippie, I promise.

Day 3 - Wednesday 6th June

Only a month later (argh, sorry!) and I'm determined to complete my trip report!
I wasn't up for missing EMH again on the Wednesday, so dragged my sister out with me. Mum and Dad wanted a lazy morning, to go for a swim etc., so we agreed to meet them at lunchtime.
We rode Peter Pan and the Teacups, and took some silly photos:
DSCN0218.jpg

DSCN0221.jpg

Then we ran to the Studios for 9.30 to head for Crush. We made it near the front of the queue, only to be told that there were technical issues and Crush wouldn't be open for at least a few hours. BOO. :sad2:
However, we did manage to walk straight on to Parachutes and RC Racer :thumbsup2, then had a couple of shots on ToT. And RnRC for good measure. After an adrenaline-fuelled morning, we went to Art of Animation, and played around with the games in the studio section at the end before it was time to meet mum and dad.
We all headed to Cinemagique, which Dad had never seen before. Got good seats behind a suspicious looking individual...
DSCN0225.jpg

We all loved it, I noticed a few changes too which was a fab surprise. Dad's a big movie fan, and couldn't stop going on about how clever it was. I spotted Alan Cumming in a bar in Glasgow the following week (he's doing MacBeth in Glasgow) and was very tempted to say "Loved you in Cinemagique!!" but got too tongue tied.
We wanted to have lunch in Blockbuster Cafe but it was shut. Another boo. :sad2:
I wasn't keen on the idea of Restaurant en Coulisse (the only other option, really) as it was mobbed and the food isn't very exciting. But we were starving so this is where we went. Sitting upstairs, the surroundings aren't too bad, and the food is still nice enough for fast food. Loved this band, who were in Studio 1 every day - thumbs up Disney. The accordion player looks so much like Linguini from Ratatouille - lots of excited kids were jumping in for photos with him, and he played the part well.
DSCN0228.jpg

Next it was time for the Stunt Show - I knew my dad would love this, and he did.
He wanted to ride ToT again afterwards, so the 3 of us went back on it with FPs.
That was a full day in the Studios, and given that Tram Tour was shut, we had pretty much exhausted its offerings. So we headed back to the main park and rode Molly Brown after grabbing BTM fastpasses. A nice relaxing interlude in the day, transports you back in time
DSCN0235.jpg

Pirates was shut due to technical problems, boo number 3 :sad2:
And we wanted to ride the Railroad but the queue was something mental like 1.5 hours! The Railroad is lovely but I wish it was more do-able.
Heading back to Main St for the parade, my sister was delighted to spot the pin trading board outside Gibson Girl, and made a few good swaps.
DSCN0242.jpg

Having been a tad underwhelmed by the parade, we were happy to stay in that seating area to watch it go by from a relative distance.
I still bagged a prime spot...
DSCN0243.jpg

It was drizzling with rain after the parade, but it was time for our BTM fastpasses and we weren't about to let them go to waste. Whilst we made our way round the queue, the heavens opened. I'm talking, monsoon. We were all a bit hyper by this time, and though lots of people were choosing not to ride BTM we just went for it. I don't think we've ever laughed so much, it was brilliant! Yes, we might as well have jumped in the lake for how soaked we were, but its one of the best memories from the trip.
Here they are afterwards, thoroughly drenched:
DSCN0245.jpg

We definitely needed to retire to the hotel after that! Mum and sister were taking too long to get ready, so dad and I headed to the Sports Bar for a pre-dinner drink. The rain had gone off again so I was able to wear my sandals :rotfl:
DSCN0247.jpg

The cocktails in Sports Bar are the most affordable in DLP, and very tasty.
Once the others joined us, we went to Annette's for dinner. We only had to wait about 10 mins, and the hostess was very impressive, really efficient with great customer service.
IMG_1454.jpg

IMG_1457.jpg

No food photos as the camera died - onion burgers for me, sami and mum (my favourite, i could never have anything else), some disgustingly massive double burger for dad. We all really enjoyed it and were very impressed by the service, including a couple of super fast skaters.
We went to Billy Bobs afterwards for another couple of drinks - a first for us. There were lots of couples doing real, proper dancing a la Strictly - we guessed that they were some kind of local dance class. Amazingly entertaining, and the live band were fantastic. Some kind of drunken conference party rocked in just as we were leaving, and the atmosphere in the place was great. Got a feeling when we're back in September without the parents, we'll be back there to stay a bit later and drink a bit more :thumbsup2
