So. It's spring time and for me, spring=track season.

I've noticed a few other people on here mention that they're trackies and I figured, well, why not? Make a thread about it.

Post your events, best times/distances/heights, recent news about your team, photos, tips and tricks for certain events, whatever!

I'll start:

Events: Discus, Javelin, Shot Put, Hammer Throw (not in competition), 100m, 200m, Throwers 4x100m relay.

Times/Distances: Discus- 81'3". Shot Put- 26'3". Javelin- 80'1". Hammer Throw- Roughly 75' (we weren't measuring accurately). 100m- 15.6. 200m- 35.35. 4x100m team score- 64 flat.

We had a meet today and I took first in discus, second in jav, second in shot, 6th in the 200m, and our thrower's relay finished 1st for girls.

And one of our captains broke the school record in the triple jump- he hopped/skipped/jumped his way to 43'6"!

I guess there aren't many track people here?

I throw jav this is my first year throwing. The first time I threw final two steps was about 60. It has to be 100 for me to compete with the varsity.

We don't separate our track team into JV or varsity, we're all just varsity. My friend throws Javelin about 105-110 feet.

Keep working at it! It's all about your form, remember that. If you have good form you'll be great.

I guess I'm very new to Track and Field but yeah i'm doing it...

I've only had one meet so far and it deffinately wasnt my best meet at all...

I'm doing hurdles, discus, and high jump and I was doing long jump but got removed as it was hurting my knee way too much...

I guess i had my worse time ever on hurdles last week I fell and busted up my other knee but I finished the race at 36 secs... but i normally can get 20 secs in practice...

on discus I got 36 feet 5in but 2 of my dicuses went out of bounds...

then on high jump i was using my other knee since the one i normally use hurt too much so i didnt get past starting point...

Those aren't bad for your first year competing. 20 seconds in hurdles is really good for a beginner. Just think of how good you'll be if you keep practicing. Our top boys hurdler is a senior and at one of our big meets my freshman year (his sophomore year) he took a really bad fall and had cuts all up the left side of his body, but he rolled with the fall and was back up almost immediately and took 3rd at the meet. This is the same kid that just broke the triple jump record.

I wasn't throwing much over 50 my first year throwing discus, but then I went to a track and field camp at UNH and that really helped me. Not only did they do running and jumping coaching, but they also did a lot with throwing (this is where I threw hammer).

High jump is tricky. I don't think I could ever do it. Saw a girl jump 5'2" earlier this year. Our team's best jumper makes about 5'4" on a really good day. She wasn't having a good day and didn't even make 4'10".

Are you in high school or junior high? If you're in junior high or even a freshman in high school, you've got a lot of time to get better.

We don't really either, it's more of a mix. But our throwing team is primarily seniors, so they dominate the competitions. Yeah, the technique is where your power comes from. I've just started throwing 5 steps, so i'm trying to get down that form.

I've had to re-learn all of my javelin forms because when I started out, I wasn't actually being coached I just had a friend show me the basics. That's why I'm not throwing as far this year.

I throw, typically, from a 6-step crossover with a 7-8 step run-up.

First, our throwing coach taught me. Then a junior taught me. So now i'm holding the jav kinda like a football instead of the forked grip. Our throwing team doesn't have the most rigerous practice either. Maybe throwing for a half hour, but then I have offseason lifting for football. So on top of an injury from football season i get some shoulder pain going. How long have you done track? You seem very knowledgable.

I'm in middle school i'm in 8th grade I didnt do track last year because this time of year is crazy enough without doing track as this time of the is when dance competition heat up

I'm in my 5th year of track. I've been a lifelong thrower and I've run sprints since 8th grade (I took freshman and sophomore years off from running, though). I'm currently a junior.

Our throwing team is practice, practice, practice. Our coach is in really good shape because he does all of our warm-ups and stuff with us. Our typical work-out is this:

1/2 mile team jog, agility team warm-ups, box-jumps with height increases (standing jumps on the boxes at 1/2 foot, 1 foot, and 2 foot heights), sumo squats for 20m, skip 20m, side lunges 20m, skip 20m, side crabs 20m, skip 20m, torso twists with weight 20m, skip 20m, accelerated sprints (25%, 50%, 75%, 100%) 20m each. Then actual throwing practice. Because I throw all 3 I train at each one for a maximum of 10 throws then switch in order to not wear out my arm. If I finish and have time left over I go run sprint practice with the sprinters. Then 1/2 mile team cooldown. We have 2 1/2 hour practices here so there's plenty of time for everything.

I have shoulder problems, too. I play volleyball (I'm an outside hitter- the one responsible for spiking the ball) and I developed bursitis and sub-scapular tendonitis from it. Javelin does nothing to help that! The motion is really bad for your shoulder even if you're doing it right, so limit how many hard throws you take. Take a few easy throws (4-5), then a few from a run-up/3 step (3-4), and then only take 2-3 full throws. You'll get in enough practice to work on your form and your shoulder probably won't hurt as much.

I throw from a forked grip because it's the most comfy of the two and I feel like I get more power out of it.

I just had my second meet today and it was quite interesting... I ended up not doing hurdles and taking one for the team and running the 400 which since i'm very lazy i've never ran the whole thing in practice yes i'm pretty sad but i'm no long distance runner...

Ok so I first had discus and I got 42 feet 3 inches which is my best so far...

Then I did high jump and my knee started bleeding right before it and I got so close to getting over starting and then my dump feet hit the pole

Then I ran the 400 and i got a minute and 45 which was really good for me ...

Then the fastest runner in the state from our school (shes faster than the fastest 1600 person at the high school) ran the mile in 5:22 and broke the school record you will probally be seeing her at the Olympic sometime soon lol over all it was a good meet

YAY! I was supposed to have a meet yesterday, but it got rained out.

I love it when people break school records. My friend broke her school's mile record her freshman year when she ran it in 4:38.

Wow a 4:38 mile WOW I cant imagine doing that... even though I heard the girl was going to a XC camp this summer so she will probally come out of that thing faster than ever lol

It was insane. I go to track camp over the summer! I guess x-c camp would be a lot of running and conditioning so it would be good for almost any sport.

But here's to her becoming faster!

Update: I threw 88' in the discus yesterday. This means I'm a Provisional Qualifier for the Class I Meet (one step short of States). I'm 12th on the list and they're taking top 18 with only 1 meet in between, so I'm fairly certain that I'm going no matter what.

good to see some track kids on here.
im in long triple and high jump. and i do the 400 and 200 from time to time.
my best long jump is 20'3" but ive scratched a jump that was close to 21'
im ok at triple jump, but we have to kids at my school that jump 45 feet.
my best 400 is 53.5

this year is my first year ever for track and field, i loved it
my school had practice everyday even on saturday. thats alott!!!

i first started with hurdles but i injured my knee so i did the 400 and in the 3rd meet at school (3/12/08) i came in first in my heat with no practice or running for atleast a week and a half. my time was a 1:07.
then by the time districts rolled around i PR with my new time at 1:04 and it was freezing cold, i didn't make it to finals but i was still happy i PR hopefully next year i will be at 60 flat. and i do the 4x400

my school did win states 3A well the boys did and girls came in 5th overall
and in that meet some records were broken

next year i want to try some field events like high jump or long jump and im still debating if i want to do 300 hurdles

the 300 Hurdles is a really, really, tough race. But I know people who do it and say that they like it.

Forgot to mention in my other post, but one of my friends, who's a freshman, runs the 100m. Well, our school record is 12.8 seconds for girls and was set and then tied last year by a senior. This freshman, with no serious training or anything ran a 12.88 second hundred saturday. If she doesn't break the record next year, I'll be surprised.
