I've done some searching and made an off-topic comment in another thread, but I haven't seen much else. So, let's talk about what we've done, or plan to do, to physically modify our MagicBands for looks, comfort, whatever.

In my case we received our bands this week. After putting mine on for the first time I found it to be uncomfortable. When closed it isn't a uniform circle or oval in shape. Thus, at least for me, it presses on two sides of my wrist and is far off on the others.

In my off-topic post one person suggested that they were cutting off the excess part of their bands and using rubber bands to shape them. I'm considering doing something similar.

What have you done, or plan to do, to your MBs?

Mine is very uncomfortable, too, but I'll just go with it. I know they have sleeves available in the parks, so I might see about getting one of those. I guess I could make one myself pre-trip, but I would rather buy one than deal with getting out my sewing machine.

My young son has severely sensitive skin and the edges on his are super sharp after taking the outer section off, so he will need a sleeve for his, too.

Not sure about attempting to manipulate the shape before we go, but that isn't a bad idea and I might try it.

I'm in! Mine haven't even arrived yet and I'm already planning mods.

I found a tutorial somewhere for a no-sew sleeve using steam-a-seam tape. I think that would be a great idea for those who don't want to sew. Me, I sew. So I'm already brainstorming covers and will probably test out a few. Once I have my band in hand to get good measurements I'm planning on starting with a quilted cover to match my camera strap.

I also found some instructions about painting/customizing the bands themselves, and nail polish seems to be an early favorite. I've got a yellow band so I'm thinking of painting a rose in the center of the Mickey head and the ears green, to give a subtle Belle touch to it. DD's is red and she wants Minnie dots.

TXStormtrooper - I've heard several people complain about the rough edges on the kid-sized bands, but apparently that's easily resolved with a nail file or bit of fine sandpaper. I'm expecting to have to smooth DD5's out before we leave so that it'll be comfortable for her even without a cover.

Ooo, I'd been wondering what to do about the edges on my DDs. It is really rough and seems like it would be irritating. I'll let you know how the nail file works.

Not really a mod, but when we went DD started putting hers on her ankle, she said it was more comfortable.

I thought I'd hate it because I never wear any wrist jewelry or watches because they annoy/irritate me. But I wore mine on an extra big setting and it was fine for me.

DH and I found that wearing it so Mickey was on the outer side of the wrist bone, rather than on top of the wrist, that it was far more comfy.

Okay, so I attempted to file them with absolutely no luck. I ended up using an extremely sharp pocket knife blade to trim/shave off sharp edges. It took about 20 minutes to do 2 of them and also to trim the extra grey length off of mine to make it fit better. Now I'm happy as a clam!

I realize I'm resurrecting an old thread there but.....
Dealing with this now. DD's band has the really rough edges after removing the outer band. Tried file too.... with 0 success too! Now attempting with a brand new razor blade. I should be cleaning out my frig! Not messing with a silly rubber wrist band!! :furious:
The least they could do is put a warning in the instructions that removing the outter band make cause rough edge. We would have chosen NOT to mess with it, and instead wrapped the band around her wrist.
$1.5 Billion and THIS is the best they could come up with for the kids sized bands? File this under Things That Make You Go "hmmmm" :(

They seem to have changed it because when I went in December the child size was a different band from the adult. it was way tinier! I liked when they did that better, seems like they modified it to be more one size fits all. The band itself for kids was actually physically less wide and shorter. I did not peel anything, it was handed to me that way when we went to check in at medical express and all were gray. Does anyone else remember that or maybe they pre-peeled it?

Ok, this is going to sound a bit scary, but here is what I did to smooth the edges of the child size band.

I took off as much as I could using an exacto knife to the edges, then I very carefully took a lighter to the very edge of the gray part.

I can't take credit for this idea, someone on this thread suggested it.

I find them comfortable, so I don't do a thing except paint on them

In the large (adult) form they are very comfortable. The rough edges occur when one has to remove (peel away from) the child-sz band which is within the adult sz band. The rough edges are "serrated" and it's literally the grey rubber left on the edge that remains when you do the separating from the larger band. So, it's like a "torn rubber" effect. Very jagged.

The good news is alls well that ends well and we were able to remove the rough rubber edge. Someone on another thread suggested an exacto knife, which I don't have. But it made me think of a razor blade. Found a brand new one in DH's workshop and after 20mins of slicing away the rough grey rubber. (I started, DD finished), the edge is as smooth as the adult band edges!! :thumbsup2

yep, we used a new razor blade. Same principle. Was scared we would cut into the pink (dd's chosen color) but didn't.
My wrists are as small as dd's but when I saw the trouble we had, I just left mine in the large form. The extra length wraps aound my wrist but I feel that it helps keep it in place nicely so I'm not going to mess with it. :) Seems very comfortable. So to others..... no complaints with them as they come out of the box. Just know that if you follow the instructions and use the option to "peel" the small band away from the larger band, you may have a kid complaining about the rough edges. I wish I'd have known about it in advance. We'd have selected to leave dd's alone, as I did mine.
