The Official GLEE thread

Sometimes I'm watching and wondering why I still watch and then they come out with a song that blows me away and I remember.

I didn't understand the "No Weave" either.

And what did Lauren's shirt say? All I could see was "Bad . . . . "? What? Attitude?

I'm probably in the minority here, but I didn't think last night was that great.
The best scenes were when Kurt came back to McKinley, and the Warblers serendaded him - genuinely touching - and the conference with Kurt and his dad and Karofsky and his dad.

Otherwise, it was a lot of re-tread material. And it could have been done in the usual 60 minutes instead of 90

How many times have we heard the "accept yourself, accept others" message?

And they've done the whole flash mob stuff in the mall before, with Artie and the Safety Dance.

Even the Gaga slant is nothing new - it's been done before last year.

I think Glee has officially hit the sophomore slump. Where is the fresh, new material? Where are the scenes that have you laughing one minute, and in tears the next?

::yes:: Well said. I enjoyed Glee more last season. I feel they've turned a little too preachy with their messages in each episode. They're really trying to hammer the point home to the point where it's like 'enough already!' We get it.

I missed Sue last night. Can't wait until the next episode, where she's back. She's just plain entertaining.

I have to agree with some of you, last night didn't blow me away. I don't know if it was because I had different expectations or what. I still feel like the whole Karofsky thing isn't resolved yet and I thought that was going to happen last night. The producers said that story line would have a happy ending, Karofsky and Santana "dating" because they don't want to come out of the closet is not a happy ending, although having Kurt return certainly is. I'm guessing if the prom episode leak does come true then we might still see something else come of this, but right now I'm a bit disappointed.

I hated that Kurt had "Likes Boys" on his shirt. I thought it was supposed to be something they didn't like about themselves. Also, what was up with Mercedes's shirt saying "No Weave?" That's something she wants to change? The fact that she doesn't have a weave? :confused3 Maybe I just didn't get the purpose of the shirts.

I think maybe some of them were things they didn't like about themselves, and some where things that other people didn't like about them (ie Kurt being gay and Mercedes not having a weave) but they accept about themselves. At least that's how I took it.

Thanks for the title. I was trying to Google it last night, because it sounded familiar and I was pretty sure it was a Streisand song, but wasn't sure. Was it from a show or just a Streisand standard?

As If We Never Said Goodbye is from the musical Sunset Blvd.

did anyone hear what was said on E that would be happening before the end of this season?

not sure if this would be consider a spoiler or not as it has been stated on tv since Wednesday evening.

the group did the taping at a mortuary recently.

Rather, it was supposed to be something that the once hated about themselves, but had come to accept and perhaps even relish.

Yeah, no idea what that was all about.

This really points out how hard the producers' job is. I really have appreciated Sue being gone. I feel every scene she is in become a cartoon. I was happy that it seemed that they were going to be deemphasizing the character. Hopefully, after her return the character will be less freakishly alien.

I have a feeling Finchel will be back, which devastates me. I don't like Fuinn at all, but I absolutely despise Finchel as well.

I didn't think they were cute at all, I actually despised their relationship from the beginning. Rachel is every teenage girl who I've ever known who is way too caught up in a guy who doesn't give a youknowwhat about her, doesn't deserve her, and yet she still throws herself at him. During season one, I was constantly thinking: GET OVER IT, RACHEL.

Then the second season came along and I remember the episode where she didn't want Finn to play football and she says "I want to be the only thing that makes you feel good." Unhealthy. Unhealthy, unhealthy, unhealthy relationship to the max.

Long story short, I can't stand Finchel. It's not something I would want teenagers to watch and think is okay. :sad2: But apparently I'm the only one who feels that way.

I wouldn't count on them downplaying her character. Especially since Jane Lynch keeps winning awards for it!

There have been cases before when a character won accolades early-on in a series' life-cycle, and then later became a drag on the series. While it has never been confirmed by the production team, there were a lot of analysts quoting unnamed sources, at the beginning of this season, saying that the producers have recognized some signs of problems with Sue's character, and would be doing something about it.

By the same token, the show has taken a lot of lumps from the analysts in the last few months. Some have raised the question as to whether Glee has "jumped the shark". (I hate that phrase.) Seeing that, if it has any credence, then the producers would be well-advised to re-think whatever decisions they may have made regarding the show for this season and next.

Time will tell.

I think that an infusion of new talent and characters will help Glee stay fresh. I mean the cast as it is can't stay forever, their characters will have to graduate high school (except for maybe Brittany  ) As much as I enjoy the current group, I don't want them to do a Saved By The Bell-esk story line to keep them around.

Another thing the writers could (and in my opinion SHOULD) do is get more into the stories of some of the OTHER kids (Mercedes, Tina, Mike, Artie for a start). Let go of Finnchel, Fuinn, Santana and Kurt for a while.

Girl, you're not alone. I can't stand their relationship. Or their characters.

Perhaps, but I can't help but think that such discontinuity will have as much negative impact as positive impact. There is as much, if not more, to say for viewers becoming attached to characters in a drama series, than there is to say for viewers becoming attached to an abstract concept behind a drama series. We care about these lives, not just any-ol'-lives that happen to find themselves in the same circumstance, and I think there will be as many, if not more, people who feel deprived if their beloved characters are swapped out, regardless of how rational the swapping is.

Sorry but I hope that they don't do anything of the sort. I think there is a reason why the show has focused on the specific characters that they have: They represent characters that have garnered the most viewer attraction. If the four you mentioned became featured prominently at the expense of the others, I, for one, would probably stop watching the show. One character you didn't mention is Brittany. That's one character who I think could be made more prominent, without adversely affecting my interest.

In re Sue's OTT behavior on the show, I think TPTB have set themselves up with a tension between reality and deliberate delusion that is sometimes hard to handle.

On the one hand, you have Sue being violent in public with students or with other adults (like at the Regionals) or bands/costumes/sets appearing out of nowhere which tells the audience not to take the show's reality literally or at least, not seriously. And the audience MUST do that, must completely suspend their disbelief and make the choice to live in the show's world of a live-action fantasy cartoon that is completely OTT and not within the bounds of real actions with consequences.

Then on the other hand, you have these deadly serious storylines about bullying or self esteem or self acceptance which demand that we take the show and its characters as conveying important truths.

Every stage show, tv show or movie is a high wire act with the audience walking between the two platforms of reality and fantasy. The problem, IMO, with Glee is that it pulls so strongly toward each platform that the audience can be losing their balance.

I would much rather see stories about them instead of Gwyneth Paltrow's character, that's for sure.

But other shows with ensemble casts have managed to keep interest as older characters leave and newer ones are brought in.

I understand your point, but with such a large cast people are bound to come and go. I mean most of these "kids" are in their 20's, Corey Monteith (Finn) is 28, are people still going to buy him as the teenage high school quarterback when he's 30?

Sorry but I hope that they don't do anything of the sort. Again I agree, there are going to be "stars" and they are going to be the focus of the show 9 times out of 10, but it wouldn't hurt anyone to delve more into the lives of some of the other cast. On "Friends" it wasn't Rachel and Ross all the time, Monica, Chandler, Joey and Pheobe also got their own story lines and people cared for those characters too. And on soap operas you may go days without seeing a particular character but that doesn't make them any less important.

I would much rather see stories about them instead of Gwyneth Paltrow's character, that's for sure.

Exactly, they're bringing back Kristin Chenowith again tomorrow for what the 3rd time? I know more about April Rhodes than I do Mercedes and to me that seems wrong, especially after 2 seasons.

But other shows with ensemble casts have managed to keep interest as older characters leave and newer ones are brought in.

My point exactly. I guess we'll just have to wait and see what they have for next season since this one is almost over.

I also read a story about which character that particular episode is based around (In white):

April Rhodes is going to be killed in a drunk driving accident and she's going to donate all the rest of her money to New Directions

Agree with the bolded.
For me, the show is definitely not consistent - there will be a few episodes in a row that aren't great and I wonder why I keep watching - then an episode that really hits it out of the park. Also, the music is a big part of the reason I watch, so if there are episodes with a lot of songs I don't like, that's also going to affect my enjoyment of the show.
