Perhaps, but I can't help but think that such discontinuity will have as much negative impact as positive impact. There is as much, if not more, to say for viewers becoming attached to characters in a drama series, than there is to say for viewers becoming attached to an abstract concept behind a drama series. We care about these lives, not just any-ol'-lives that happen to find themselves in the same circumstance, and I think there will be as many, if not more, people who feel deprived if their beloved characters are swapped out, regardless of how rational the swapping is.
Sorry but I hope that they don't do anything of the sort. I think there is a reason why the show has focused on the specific characters that they have: They represent characters that have garnered the most viewer attraction. If the four you mentioned became featured prominently at the expense of the others, I, for one, would probably stop watching the show. One character you didn't mention is Brittany. That's one character who I think could be made more prominent, without adversely affecting my interest.
IMO Glee will do & has done it's best when it's a weave -- sometimes you're rooting for the character, sometimes against, sometimes you want it fun and loud, sometimes a little serious, sometimes a big, over-the-top stylized song(Vogue), sometimes something quiet that almost moves you to tears(Landslide), sometimes it's just got to be an outrageously hilarious performance of Tik & Tok by Key Dollar Sign Ha.
Sue's always done over the top, salivating mad dog crazy stunts. Then they turn around and show us Sue w/ her sister Jean -- still some of the very best moments of this show, ever. The next thing we know Brittany schools us about gay sharks. The show simply has to keep moving, weaving in and out the people we've loved, along with reasons to laugh/love/hate new characters w/ new stories. Staying focused too strongly on that core in this format will require the characters to either stay in a rut & bore us to death, or continuously hop around from foolish to outlandish in an attempt to come up w/ an interesting hook for the audience.
It's a show set in a HS. Spread the love, spread the attention, keep us entertained & give us a reason to buckle up and take the ride.
I thought the show was much better during the first season. I loved every episode. With season 2, I find myself bored and the show can drag. Some episodes are still great but they're not as consistent. I'm sorry but I could've fallen asleep during the 90 minute episode.
