The Official GLEE thread

Perhaps, but I can't help but think that such discontinuity will have as much negative impact as positive impact. There is as much, if not more, to say for viewers becoming attached to characters in a drama series, than there is to say for viewers becoming attached to an abstract concept behind a drama series. We care about these lives, not just any-ol'-lives that happen to find themselves in the same circumstance, and I think there will be as many, if not more, people who feel deprived if their beloved characters are swapped out, regardless of how rational the swapping is.

Sorry but I hope that they don't do anything of the sort. I think there is a reason why the show has focused on the specific characters that they have: They represent characters that have garnered the most viewer attraction. If the four you mentioned became featured prominently at the expense of the others, I, for one, would probably stop watching the show. One character you didn't mention is Brittany. That's one character who I think could be made more prominent, without adversely affecting my interest.

IMO Glee will do & has done it's best when it's a weave -- sometimes you're rooting for the character, sometimes against, sometimes you want it fun and loud, sometimes a little serious, sometimes a big, over-the-top stylized song(Vogue), sometimes something quiet that almost moves you to tears(Landslide), sometimes it's just got to be an outrageously hilarious performance of Tik & Tok by Key Dollar Sign Ha.

Sue's always done over the top, salivating mad dog crazy stunts. Then they turn around and show us Sue w/ her sister Jean -- still some of the very best moments of this show, ever. The next thing we know Brittany schools us about gay sharks. The show simply has to keep moving, weaving in and out the people we've loved, along with reasons to laugh/love/hate new characters w/ new stories. Staying focused too strongly on that core in this format will require the characters to either stay in a rut & bore us to death, or continuously hop around from foolish to outlandish in an attempt to come up w/ an interesting hook for the audience.

It's a show set in a HS. Spread the love, spread the attention, keep us entertained & give us a reason to buckle up and take the ride.

Agree with the bolded.
For me, the show is definitely not consistent - there will be a few episodes in a row that aren't great and I wonder why I keep watching - then an episode that really hits it out of the park. Also, the music is a big part of the reason I watch, so if there are episodes with a lot of songs I don't like, that's also going to affect my enjoyment of the show.

Agreed

Glee is very hit or miss, but I keep watching. Season 1 Part 1 was the best for me. The music was great on every episode because it had mass appeal, and it just seemed like the writers were trying harder. Ever since then, the show has been in a slow decline, IMO. Also, I feel like the show doesn't feel like it's in a HS setting any more. The first season really captured that HS feel, but lately it hasn't felt like that.

The season starts Wednesday, September 9th on FOX.

There have been several different threads about this show, so I thought I would make an official one.

I think this is my new favorite show. :thumbsup2

Show your love for Glee here and we'll try and keep it spoiler free.

For West Coasters, please keep in mind that East Coasters may start discussing the episodes right after they air.

Good show, had never seen it until the other night.

::yes:: I thought the show was much better during the first season. I loved every episode. With season 2, I find myself bored and the show can drag. Some episodes are still great but they're not as consistent. I'm sorry but I could've fallen asleep during the 90 minute episode.

Can anybody tell me what happened during the last 10 minutes of the show last night?? Thunderstorm blew out our satellite.

I'm terrible at remembering order, but the gist of it was that the reason behind all of the mystery surrounding Sam was that his father lost his job and they've been living out of a motel room. Kurt was giving Sam his old clothes and Quinn knew about it because they were in the same church group. Sam has two younger siblings that he's watching while his parents pound the pavement. Rachel and Finn show up at the door and surprise him with his old guitar, which he had to sell and the club bought back for him. They all finished up with a great rendition of Don't Stop with the brother and sister helping out.

If I left any details out, I'm sure others will pitch in.

Same thing happened to me in the episode when Kurt went back to his old school. The next day, I watched the episode on the computer. In case you didn't know, you can watch for free. Just google "glee official website" and click on the episode you want.

Oh, wait, you said your satellite went out. My cable went out. By the next day, everything was up and running fine again.

I agree. I missed last night's episode and am not even interested in catching up on it. I think it's going to end up being a show I'll just tune in whenever it's on but it won't be one of my regular TV shows to watch anymore...

DD and I will be seeing Glee Live next month. I'm sure we will end up at the movie, as well.:thumbsup2

I really enjoyed the Rumors episode. Of course, I love Fleetwood Mac's Rumors album and not everyone may be into that. I was way cool with DD because songs that have been playing in my house for her entire life were featured.

I do think they are running out of things for Sue to do. Every week she's starting some whole new adventure all to ruin glee club. I think her character is best with the Cheerios. Hopefully they figure out what to do with her.

But other shows with ensemble casts have managed to keep interest as older characters leave and newer ones are brought in.
Everything has happened at least once in at least one universe. What I was saying is that I think that such discontinuity is as likely as not to have as much negative impact as positive impact. That doesn't mean that it is 100% assured to have more negative impact than positive impact - just that it is more likely for that to be the case.

I understand your point, but with such a large cast people are bound to come and go. I mean most of these "kids" are in their 20's, Corey Monteith (Finn) is 28, are people still going to buy him as the teenage high school quarterback when he's 30?
Of course not, but that just makes a good argument for the point that the whole Glee concept is very tenuous - that due to the nature of a high school-based drama, it is as likely as not to fall apart after a while, not because the show's quality (i.e., writing, production and acting) goes down, but just because circumstance gets in the way.

The most successful high school-based dramas tend to graduate into following the beloved characters into college or real life. Buffy and Gossip Girl come to mind. Friday Night Lights is a good counter-example, but the point is that there are more examples of Buffy and Gossip Girl (success by letting the main characters get older) and Saved by the Bell (failure, arguably), than there are of Friday Night Lights (success by swapping in new high school students).

Again I agree, there are going to be "stars" and they are going to be the focus of the show 9 times out of 10, but it wouldn't hurt anyone to delve more into the lives of some of the other cast. On "Friends" it wasn't Rachel and Ross all the time, Monica, Chandler, Joey and Pheobe also got their own story lines and people cared for those characters too.
Well, I don't really see your point, because as far as I'm concerned Monica and Chandler (at least) were as much the "stars" of Friends as Rachel and Ross, if not more so. And the Joey and Phoebe case indicates what I was referring to, afaic: Friends could have gone on with either or even both of them leaving the show mid-way through, with practically no significant impact on the long-term success of the show, while I think taking any of the other four out of the mix probably would have undercut the show to some extent.

Regardless, we're not talking about Friends. We're talking about Glee. I don't see success stemming from an ensemble made up of Artie, Tina, Mercedes, Mike, Lauren, and Sam taking the place of Rachel, Finn, Quinn, Kurt, Blaine, Santana, Brittany, and Puck as the main "stars" (with new characters filling in the supporting roles).

And on soap operas you may go days without seeing a particular character but that doesn't make them any less important.
Soap operas are not a good example of what could constitute "success", these days.

I've said this before, but I have to say it again. For all it's silly fun and out there and over the top moments, Glee is relevant. As a teacher and a mom of a high school drama kid, the issues Glee tackles are the issues we have everyday. If a kid can watch this show and feel better about themselves then all the Sue cartooning, Finn/Quinn/Rachel shenanigans are all worth it. If I didn't live with these problems in the kids I know and teach then maybe I wouldn't feel so strongly about it. Sure, I like some episodes more than others, but I LOVE this show and hope it continues to give some kids a light and a voice.

I swear I saw ANOTHER TV show (or movie) with the exact story line....that the Prom Queen is announced at the prom and its a gay guy:confused3

What ever happened to Quinn's baby??

Nevermind...I googled. I forgot that Rachel's Bio Mom adopted her.

Interesting episode. I saw the prom Queen winner coming a mile away, but it was still handled really well. I didn't need to have them bring Jesse back. I'm over him.

I wonder if Mercedes and Sam might become a couple?

Mercedes does need a love interest but they need to stop hooking them all up with each other. Bring in someone new for her. Maybe someone who isn't a singer.

I so agree! Jesse is not needed. I'd like to see Mercedes and Sam together. Mercedes is my favorite character (well..Kurt, too) because she is so much like what real high school kids are.

But if Jesse didnt come back for at least tonight, then we wouldnt see Finn's jealousy, now for the rest of it we will have to see if it is too much, although he did mention this was his new"career"

I really wish they would have kept Quinn's character changed by the birth of her baby, I dont like this character at all.

I'm in the minority, but we were thrilled to see Jesse!!!! His character is an idiot, (as are all the guys at McKinley, seriously, they are all dumb, it's annoying) but I love Jonathan Groff and he can sing to us any day!

Loved Dancing Queen!
