The Official 2013 Wine and Dine Half Marathon Thread

Congrats to all those who have finished their long runs already this weekend! I'm planning to do my 11 tomorrow afternoon. I'm nervous- not for the distance but the temperature. It's turned cold up here in western pa and tomorrow's temps are to be around 48/feels like 44. Normally of be pumped to run in that but I've never run in that for 2+ hours. Any advice? I'm a little nervous about ending up sick right before the race. Should I just hit the treadmill to be on the safe side? I've been trying to get a lot of rest just to try to stay healthy as I seem to get sick fairly easily.

Great work, everyone!

Coach, I really hope you get some relief soon. pixiedust: That's just no bueno from top to bottom.

I did a super fantastically crappy 10 this morning, for my second run of the entire week. Ugh. I've got a stupid head cold which has now manifested into a lovely hacking cough, which accompanied me on my run. :headache: SUPER!

That's okay. I have to keep reminding myself that I'm running W&D for FUN, so these runs just have to get done, they don't have to be pretty. :crazy2:

Oh, Man...I really hope I can get another long (9-11 miles) run in before we leave. It's not looking good from a scheduling perspective...

I feel like I need to squeeze in a short (<4 miles) run on either Tuesday afternoon or Wednesday morning after we put the kids on the bus. I just don't think it is a good idea to run and then fly later in the afternoon. I think I will be fine since it is only a 2 1/2 hour flight. In the summer, I would get up before work and run 3-4 miles and then go sit in an ambulance for 12 hours so I don't think that would be any worse than flying right?

There is little issue with folks running a short run then hopping a plane. I would only be concerned if you ran a much longer distance. If one is concerned, a simple set of compression socks or tights would help while on the flight. Also, getting up and walking every 60-90 minutes will help.

There is a small difference between the box and the plane... the plane also has a loss of ambient pressure; down to an equivalent of 8000 feet altitude. Just enough to slow blood flow returning up the legs.

Thanks, Coach! It was the altitude and dehydration issue that had me concerned. Getting up and walking around is never a problem because I always have to check out the airplane restroom :)...at least once.

Found shelter from the storm. The Houston half has been postponed 1 hour due to severe thunderstorms in the area. I am socked but at least I am in a parking garage and not still under a tree. This might be my craziest training run yet.

Figment - I did a long run in the cold yesterday morning - it was 37 degrees when I started. I wore my UA cold gear pullover + running pants and I was fine. I watched the weather though and while it was colder in the early morning when I went, there were no winds....I struggle the most with windy & cold. If it's not too windy, you should be ok. I felt pretty warm with the sun and even managed to be soaked in sweat by the end of my 13.1. :)

Peachy - I hope the weather clears and your half marathon is able to start soon...can't wait to read your update.

Coach - so sorry to read your update on your knee. I hope you get good news at the Dr. this week.

Congrats to everyone who completed their final long runs! :cheer2:

Anyone out here looking for a WDW Wine & Dine 1/2 marathon bib? I'm still recovering from an injury and had a hard time with ToT. Worried that I won't finish this one in time.

Great Job, everyone on that last longs runs. I love that we are all tapering off now! This is getting exciting! 2 weeks from now we will all be proud owners of some new bling!

To all those with injuries, aches, and pains, feel better soon! Pixie dust is on the way! pixiedust:

Have to agree with coach here. I ran a full in Arizona and two hours later flew to Washington DC. Wore my compression socks, drank a TON of water, sat on the aisle seat so I could stretch and got up every hour. You will be fine after a short run.

Well my "training run" turned into a new half marathon PR.

Last night the weather called for 65% chance of thunderstorms. This morning it changed to 50% chance of "drizzle". Both said likely time would be around 9 am. What we got starting around 6:30 was a driving rainstorm with lightning. They postponed the race an hour and I found shelter in a parking garage. I was soaked.

Fortunately the storm part passed relatively quickly but the rain lingered on. It was wet windy and felt chilly. About 7:30 I left my shelter to wait in the porta potty line and found one of my running partners. I hadn't planned to run with anyone but decided why not. I can at least statt with him.

Finally at 8am the race started. We started off with 2-1/2 minute runs and 1 minute walks.

We kept a decent steady pace averaging around 11:40 I think. Mile 6 was slightly slower as I added a little distance waiting for them in the portajohn. At 8 they were going to pick up the pace and I wanted to take it easier we we split up.

At some point it dis stop raining but I couldn't tell you when.

I finished up at 2:37:40 I think which is faster than my half PR by 2 minutes. We had a few uphill sections (for Houston) @ the end that were a little rough. All in all I'm happy with my race.

I'm exhausted now, especially after fighting traffic on the way home.

Hi all-I've been obsessively following this thread. So excited that the big day is getting so close. NOT excited about this unfortunate attack of bronchitis I have acquired. UGH. Makes it hard to run at all, let alone a get in a decent long run. I have been told by my doctor I should be fine by race day. I'm just nervous about losing fitness before we get there. I am fairly certain I will be fine and finish this race without an issue. Perhaps not as fast as I wanted to, but finish nonetheless. It's crazy how quickly doubt and confidence killer thoughts can creep in and make you feel unworthy to lace up your sneakers! The fact that both my husband and myself missed the 2009 half marathon due to swine flu  doesn't help. (we work with special needs kids and despite flu shots and obsessive and constant hand washing we just can't fight off everything!:crazy2:)

Anyhow...just trying to run as much as I can without causing an wheeze attack. Fingers crossed this will be a quick bronchitis!!!

Congrats to all who have finished long runs and healing pixie dust to the sickies and the injured. We will FINISH THIS and have a blast doing it!!pixiedust:

It's definitely closing in on me! I had a "race anxiety" dream last night:rotfl2:. In my dream, I was running with DH and feeling really good...like I was at mile 3 or so. I looked at DH and asked him how far we'd gone and he said, "It looks like we're coming up on mile 10!" I freaked out, thinking we'd somehow gotten off track and took a short cut! Then, it started raining...and I HATE getting my feet wet...and then we had to cross a stream in our running shoes!! Thank God it was only a dream:lmao:.

I had a second anxiety attack this morning. I went to my cash box to grab a couple dollar bills for the kids' offering at church. I knew I had a stack of $100 which included 5 $1 bills that I had set aside for the trip. I had a $10 and a $1 in there too under the tray, which will be the start of the savings for next year. When I went to get the money, all I could find was the $10 and $1:scared:!! I remembered taking out the rolled change ($50 worth) and 5 $20's when I went to the bank to deposit it, but I couldn't remember what I did with the other $100. I was already running late for church so I couldn't keep up the search. During church, I was digging through my purse, thinking maybe I'd grabbed it all when I went to the bank...nope. Ugh!! I couldn't believe that I'd lost $100! When I got back home, I went back to the little cash box. I looked in the tray, and there, under the index cards that I use to record the balance, was my FOLDED stack of $100:worship:. The alcohol budget is intact:thumbsup2.

OMG! I just looked at my countdown clock and it's almost SINGLE DIGITS!!

I have returned to running! Took it really slow at a run 2 walk 4 pace and got 13k done in 1:55. I considered going longer, just to get up to 19k again but I was soaked and freezing, and I am just over a three-week cold so I didn't want to take any chances.

So now, do I try to do another long run maybe Friday night or leave well enough alone? No serious aches or pains at this point!

At this point its mental. You are 4k away from the finish line and if you feel comfortable making that as a jump to the finish distance, then back off miles next weekend and rest up for the race.

I would not run with a chest illness. It can very easily prolong the illness and make the race weekend a miserable experience. Best to save energy for getting well.

Great Job on the PR, Peachygreen!

Feel better Campbellscot :)

KristinRice - thank goodness the alcohol budget is safe!! I actually spent the morning adding up gift cards today

I've noticed my stomach is a bit "off " the day after a long run :(. I hope it doesn't effect my trip too much.

Starting to get excited!!

You are not having a post race recovery meal or are dehydrating on your runs. Try to take on 2-3 Kcal of a drink or light meal within an hour of stopping your run. The ideal ratio is 4 carbs to 1 protein. Many folks grab a chocolate milk but most anything will work well.

firmly planted on the couch watching football and finishing a GREAT mental run. :thumbsup2

Thanks Coach! I don't drink milk but last night I had chocolate almond milk about 1/2 hour after my run and then about an hour after my run I had a veggie burger.

I'm thinking maybe I did not hydrate very well for the couple of days leading up to my long run???

I did it! I'm officially done w my long runs for this race. Got my 11 done in quite chilly weather but its done. Minor panic attack at mile 9.5 when hit w sudden knee ache but i stopped and stretched and rubbed and walked for a few minutes and it was good to go when i started up again! phew! I'm still not sure how "easy" 13.1 is going to be but I do know I will finish it (barring unforseen incidents).

Now I can focus on the important parts of the race weekend... Like what to wear the day AFTER the race with my medal.... :) do we know what color the ribbon is?
