The Official 2013 Wine and Dine Half Marathon Thread

Hi everyone!

I have been absent from the boards for a few weeks and am excited by all the activity recently. :)

I am a producer with a film studio and we have moved into a much bigger office/soundstage recently, and so the last 3 weeks I have not run at all. AT ALL. I feel a little sick to my stomach about it, but starting today I am doing a focused 30 day training regiment to get back into the swing of things. I hope it does some good. I trained about 4 weeks about and was doing pretty good with a consistent 5 miles every other day at about 11 MPM. Hoping I can get back to that and maybe faster.

I am in Corral G bib # 5011 which I think is perfect since I always finish in the 2:30 range.

Excited and nervous about the upcoming race!

- Carey

Welcome.

As a cautionary note, you don't try to cram to get all your miles in. Cramming all too often leads to injury. All is not lost and you can still have a successful race. A decent plan would try to get up into the 8-10 mile race for long runs then make the leap on race night.

Holler if you need ideas.

Have fun, this can be a great race and a nice break from work. Oh, and a great excuse to see the Food and Wine....

Yay! After two weeks off due to health issues, I returned to running tonight. Got in a slow 3 miles and then did a one hour boot camp class. Planning to do 4 miles Wednesday night and then 8 Friday. If all goes well will head for 12 miles the next weekend. :-)

Find an orthopedic doctor, one who is a runner or works with runners. Go through an x-ray, MRI and any other test. What you want to do is rule out a hard tissue issue and look for joint deformities. Once those are ruled out, then one can deal with how to address soft tissue issues. There is always the option of taking a cortisone injection to relieve the joint inflammation, after hard tissues are determined to be OK. Even if you do not go that route, a course of NSAIDs and rest may get you into the race. You will be well rested albeit a little undertrained. If you are on the course of rest, talk with the doctor to see what workouts you can do. 3-4 weeks of water running will help keep your aerobic levels up. Get to the doc and then lets talk.

Trying not to panic. Trying not to panic. Trying not to panic.

Thanks coach. :-) I've always appreciated your advice. I was thinking I would alternate every other day between a 5 mile route, and the elliptical/weights at my gym. What do you think? I plan to use my weekends to make the jump to a 8 mile route and maybe a 10. Any suggestions on schedule or pace.

If possible I'd like to finish at 2:30 but I would settle for 2:45. Just did an easy 5 miles at about 70 minutes (intervals) to get back in the swing of things.

Also going to watch my food intake over the next few weeks. Any suggestions on a meal plan that will help with my running goals for endurence and stamina, but also keep fairly lean so I can trim a few pounds?

Thanks!

I would suggest a balanced meal plan trying to stay with 40:30:30 Carb:Protein:Fats and staying away from processed. The Kcal intake would depend on current weight and activity.

If you are running 5 during the week

I think I would look to 6-7 this weekend (go by feel - back off if fatigued)
Then 5 the next, 8-9, 9-10, 5, W&D. These can easily be tweaked to fit how you are feeling and to work around tightness or an itis that may pop up.

I would run about a minute a mile slower over the next couple weeks and then let your body govern pickups in speed.

I like the idea of weight training on the off days. I would train splitting the body into three workouts. Chest/Back; Shoulders Arms; Legs. It's up to you on how you do it.

Good Luck

My husband and I are staying at Beach Club. Would we be able to exit the after race party to clean up and change clothes in our room and then reenter the party? Or once you're in are you in for the night?

We have stayed there every race and just bring the clothes with us and change in BR near race finish. I cannot recall seeing people coming back I not the park there but it doesn't mean you cannot. I think if I went back to the room, I may just never make it back! We usually hang out at the party for several hours and then love being able to walk back to our room! See you there!

Is anyone staying at Port Orleans Riverside for this race (or have stayed there in the past)? DH and I are debating switching to there to save some money... Last year we stayed at the Boardwalk and while it was convenient for walking back after the party, I ended up feeling so sick that I ended up walking from bench to bench with my head in my hands all the way from Canada to our room and I was still not sure I was going to make it. Though I plan to hydrate much better this time and hope to avoid repeating that whole part, last year the walk seemed eternal and not exactly a selling point. I'm just concerned about the possible lack of a fridge at Riverside, and whether the fact that we've never stayed there before might just throw me off my "mental" game. Or it might be fun! We usually avoid the moderates with multiple bus stops because of prior bad experiences, however we aren't going to be doing as much park hopping this trip, and won't have to worry about anyone but the two of us (no kids or other relatives) :confused3

For Wine and Dine, no...but I did stay there for the Princess Half in 2011. We were in Oak Manor, which was really close to the front of the resort and I remember walking out front to grab the bus. I remember the ride to Epcot not being very long.

It's definitely different from being at the Boardwalk. When we were at Riverside this was after staying at the Boardwalk twice in 2009, so it took some adjusting getting used to the condition of the room itself (which was fine but needed a refurb...not sure if they've been refurbed since then beyond the royal rooms) and having a bit of a walk to the lobby. But we still liked it and would stay there again. The bad thing about getting the bus back after the race was that I'd been fighting IT band issues that year and the bus ride was just long enough for my knees to really tighten up. So be careful of that!

Not sure what happened to me after my long run over the weekend.
I wore my go-to shoes. I've run at least 150 miles in them. They're comfy and still have plenty of miles left to run in them.
I wore OK socks, they're moisture wicking, but maybe not AS good as some of the socks that I have.

Anyway, I'm sitting here now with one foot out of my boot b/c I'm losing a toenail. TMI, right???? And the other foot has a nice sized calous on the big-toe. Another TMI.

UGH.
I took it easy and did the rest thing after my long run. (11.56 on Saturday, super hot/humid run. Much slower than I usually run. Took a huge toll on me in a number of ways. Confidence/endurance/body. UGH)

I need to get back in the saddle today. My toe is still achy, but I've wrapped it and I'm actually kind of hoping that it falls off or something. I lost a toenail in early July. Once it got past the achy part, it was actually smooth sailing.

I feel like I've come too far and worked too hard in my training to be injured by something as stupid as toenails.
:confused3

I can see if I sported brand new shoes for my long run.
:furious:

Still hoping for the full 13 on Saturday, but at this point, if my toenail is on fire still on the weekend...that might not be wise.
UGH.

Yikes! I'm not liking all these injuries now that we are in the home stretch. :headache: Since my spill I have noticed I am being overly cautious with everything I do now...even down to walking up and down stairs. :tiptoe:

I was able to get back out there after 4 days of rest. So far so good. I don't want to push it but mentally I do want to do some long runs. I will continue my usual weekday 4.2 route for now and I'm hoping for 12 miles on Saturday, but we will see.

Please everyone, stay safe. Now is not the time for us to mess this up. ;)

I've stayed there a few times in the past and loved it! My only complaint was I had a room next to one of the pools and was kept up all night with the rudest bunch of cheerleading parents you could imagine. :scared1: Then I had to actually go out on the walkway one morning at 7am, yes 7Am, and scream at a bunch of cheerleaders walking through the parking lot cheering at the top of their lungs. Apparently they thought they were the only ones on the planet at that particular moment...:furious:

The hotel itself is great though and not too many bus stops. I've always stayed in Oak Manor so I don't know what Alligator Bayou is like. I know they just went through a big refurb not that long ago so I'm presuming the rooms are nice. And I can definitely confirm the Mississippi Mudslides in the main bar are the best! :lmao: :rotfl:

ACK!!

I haven't run since last Tuesday (but it was a 12-miler!) and I feel it. I worked the last 4 days and got smacked with a nasty case of the allergies. I started on Flonase to try and get the junk out of my head. Well, it worked...now it's all in my chest:mad:. I can usually plow through a run and deal with nasal congestion, but now my chest is so tight that I am coughing all the time. I'm hoping that as the day progresses, I will clear up enough to get in at least 3 miles. I want to ease myself back into it. My plan is to do 3-4 today, then 7-9 on Thursday and then I have a 5K on Saturday with my daughter. I'm thinking that I will try to get in just two more runs at the 12 mile distance between now and the race.

For me, it has all been mental. I never, EVER thought I could go 13 miles. When I first contemplated this RunDisney event, I was hoping that I could get myself in shape to do the 5K. I did not even look at the 1/2 Marathon because I thought it would be impossible. I still have trouble wrapping my mind about how far I've come since last August. Even though I have completed 12 miles on three separate occassions, I still look at this race as being insurmountable. Even though it will only be ONE more mile than my longest run...that's less than 15 more minutes...I still get nervous:scared:. I remember how sore and tired I felt plodding out the last mile on my 12-mile runs and I start to question myself. Then I remember that I will be in DISNEY WORLD:cloud9:. I doubt I will even realize I am running once I get around the Boardwalk! I'm certain that the scenery of miles 6-13 at WDW is far nicer than the run-down trailer parks and condemned buildings that I go past on miles 8-12 here at home:rolleyes1. Even though I can definitely feel it after those long runs, I have never been "incapacitated" to the point of "I don't want to move"! I've always been able to have the energy and stamina to go about the rest of my day. The next day, I have always had very minimal residual soreness so, physically, I think I am in a good place:goodvibes.

I can't believe that in one more month, I will be in Disney World to run a HALF-MARATHON!! What am I thinking!? I hope I run into a few fellow DIS'ers (not literally!) when I'm there. I don't think DH will stay with me...maybe, but doubtful. I'd love to run/walk with anyone else who has the same Disney obsession as I do. I'm planning on doing 4 minutes of walking, followed by 8 minutes of slow jogging and repeating that 13-15 times until the finish line. If anyone else is interested in hanging with me, feel free:dance3:. I only get chatty during my walk intervals. Otherwise, I am very focused on my breathing, pace and music...and the little voices in my head:rolleyes1.

Oh, another random thought...I see quite a few people staying at the AKL/AKV. Would anyone be interested (if it's even possible) in sharing a cab/van to and from the Expo? I know that there's a lot of solos and couples and it seems like it would be more economical for a group of 6-8 people to split the cost of a taxi van if the timing worked out. Right now, we are planning on going to the Expo on Friday around noon or so. We are planning on hitting the AK that morning for EMH but we really only want to do Kilimanjaro Safari and maybe Everest. We're planning on the Expo after that so we'd be open to leaving from the park or the resort. I'll post on the FB page too. Just a suggestion...

I am doing the half, staying at Pop, renting a car, and flying in Friday night.

This is my first half marathon so I am kind of nervous, but thinking about where I am running I think that will push me through.

The RunDisney training plan has been my go to since early August, trying my best to stick with it and go farther. This weekend says 12.5 I believe...should be interesting! My legs are catching up with me, not necessarily my lungs or breathing on these long runs.

Hope it is a good time though, I am excited!

I am staying at AKL and I would love to carpool to the expo. However, my flight arrives at 11:30 AM on Friday so I can't go until later in the day. IF my flight is on time, I would think I could get to the lodge and be ready to go by 2:00. I could probably be ready earlier than 2:00 but if I say 2:00 that allows for extra time in case we have problems.

As far as those scary 13.1 miles, that number is no where near as scary as it sounds. I was just as intimidated by that 13.1 number as you, but now I've run that distance plus an extra mile or two more times than I can remember and the Wine & Dine will be my fourth half marathon (but my first Disney race). So, it must not have been that bad or I wouldn't have kept doing it. You've done the training, your body is ready. Your brain just needs to catch up with the rest of you.

Trying not to panic. Trying not to panic. Trying not to panic.

If you continue to have problems with your hip I know of an excellent physical therapist for runners in Overland Park. She's a running coach in addition to be a physical therapist and most of her physical therapist patients are runners. Let me know if you need more information.

Yes! Yes! Yes!

I did some stretches today between classes and I felt some pops and clicks and I'm feeling a little less pain. Or it's the NSAID kicking in.

It just dawned on me that it would have made a lot more sense to introduce myself before I replied to previous posts. Better late than never?

You can probably figure out I'm from Kansas from my username. I'm not fast, but DH thinks that username is funny so I figured why not use it. I am, however, a mama to a fabulous six-year-old girl. I'm REALLY looking forward to the Wine and Dine Half. I just PRed at a half less than two weeks ago so the pressure is off. I plan to enjoy the experience, get a picture with Darth Vader, take in the Christmas lights, and then eat until I'm so full I'll have to waddle back to AKL (actually to the cabs since AKL isn't a host resort, which stinks).

I'll be in corral D. Hopefully my husband will be there with me. He recently ran a 10K with a time of 56:46 so I'm hoping that gets him into corral D. We'll find out at the expo, if not I'll move back to run with him. On top of that, he's having recurrent ankle problems and his longest run ever is 7 miles. So I may be going solo.

Good luck to all!

My 10k that placed me into Corral D was a 55:36. 56:46 is pretty close to that, he ought to be in D, provided his ankle cooperates.
:thumbsup2

We're staying next door in POFQ and have stayed there before for marathon weekend. The rooms had big refurb couple of years ago, haven't been since last year, but they were fine then. Not sure about fridges, heard FQs are almost all done, it might be worth checking the resort thread or calling ahead with a request.

But overall, I love port Orleans and find after a race I don't care where the hotel is as long as I don't have to walk too far!!!!!
