OK, since I have never stayed at WL before (my first stay will be in October), can some explain Humphrey to me?

Thanks!

Do you know someone at the Lodge we could call for the correct information? I don't always trust the information from some of the Cast Members you reach calling the main # as sometimes they aren't even located at the Lodge. :confused3

Beckie

Let me see what I can do. :)

Just popping in to say Good Day!!!

Wondering about the scaffolding also. Some of Kelly's pictures showed it on the SouthWing. Wonder if they are just pressure washing the sides or if they are doing rennovations to the outside of the Lodge? :artist:

We just returned last night and I can tell you that they weren't pressure washing. I looked outside to see what they were doing but couldn't actually tell. Our room was fairly close to where the scaffolding was. Didn't hear anything.
The only bad thing was that I couldn't take a full on picture without the scaffolding showing up so I bought a 4 x 6 photo in the Mercantile for $4.

Sure we love to pass on the Legend of Humphrey Bear and his MAGICAL NOSE.

Humphrey is located in the Lobby and is the Mascot (an animal, person, or thing adopted by a group as its representative symbol and supposed to bring good luck) of The Wilderness Lodge and the Wilderness Lodge Vet's Legend is that if you rub Humphreys Nose at the start of or during your visit to WDW you will be favored with DIXIE DUST and you will have a MAGICAL STAY.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON HUMPHREY AND WHY HE IS IN OUR HEARTS:

One our most loved VETS was a sweet gentleman named Roy Car aka FloridaCat he loved Humphrey and always posted to rub his noise so the Magic could begin. We vets also make sure to say "Hi" to Roy our dear friend when we all visit by rubbing Humph's nose.

This Wilderness Lodge FAQ Thread is dedicated to Roy Carr and his Memory because he was very instrumental in making this and the previous 4 WL FAQ threads the great threads they have all been. He posted weather reports for the WDW area every morning as he lived very near the world. He was our Wild Wacky Wonderful WL Weatherman the title was even bestowed to him by the DIS-Tag Fairy.

This thread installment is dedicated to the fond memory of our dearly departed Roy Carr AKA FloridaCat who left this world July 29th 2004. You are sorely missed my friend.
Hey Roy, this one’s for you. While at the Lodge, Pat the Bear’s nose so the magic can begin.”

We have a separate thread over on the Community Board Humphrey’s Home because we all became such good friends and loved to chat, the DIS Moderators thought we needed to keep the FAQ Thread open for questions and answers just on the Lodge and information about the Lodge. So if anyone would like to join in please visit us over on the other thread.

There is also pizza...I think most know I love the Wilderness Lodge but I wouldn't spend more then one CS (if that) at the Roaring Fork. There are just so many great CS's at the parks that will give you so much more of a variety.

Beckie

It's true that there is pizza - but it's on the adult menu. Since we were on the dining plan , that kind of stunk. The ONLy kid option was the chicken nuggets. (My DH got pizza and shared some with the boys....) Only one kid menu item is a little odd to me.... But I really really liked the deli sandwhiches and the blondies!!! :sunny:

Hi Beckie!

What a beautiful tribute!!! Roy was one of the reasons I started reading the DIS. I happened upon the WL thread back when I was a lurker & I was just entranced. He really brought out the magic! Every morning when I had my coffee, I'd hop on the DIS & see what FloridaCat had to say. I think he touched many of us deeply - even those of us who hadn't posted. I just wish I would have written something then - just to say thanks.

Unfortunately, I still haven't been able to stay at WL - one of the reasons I don't post here, though I still subscribe (back to lurking, LOL). We were supposed to stay at WL during our trip Nov/Dec 2005 but at the last minute my Dsis (with whom I travel) had to cancel because of job constraints, so we had to change our plans. But we spent the afternoon there (& rubbed Humphrey's nose!) before MVMCP & there is just nothing like it! I still love this thread - the WL vets are some of the nicest people on the DIS. Thanks to all for continuing to share your great experiences!

FYI - to all bunkbed people. While we were there last week they installed new lamps over each of the bunk beds. We went out one morning and came back with the new lights all installed - our 2 boys went nuts having their own personal reading lights over there beds!

I have never used the dining credits but have a good understanding of how they work...The problem is Roaring Fork really isn't a counter service restaurant because the Lodge is a Deluxe Resort the Roaring Fork was/is originally more of a snack bar to grab a cold drink, coffee or early breakfast sandwich, ect.

The counter service credits are more suited for the parks or over at the value and moderates counter service areas that have a more extensive menu. I know that the other deluxe resorts have a very simular limited menu in their quick sevice areas. I guess that's a better description for Roaring Fork Quick Service not Counter Service. So using the credits there just aren't the best use of them. :confused3

That's great! We did not get those lights installed last week while we were there. We checked out 9/2 and were in Room 3012. I did think the room was a little dark, so those lights are a good addition!

Were they the round lights with the decorative images on them? I saw a couple of those sitting in the hallway one day and wondered about them.

Thank You, your post was so sweet and endearing, you have always been with the group and I know YOU WILL STAY AT THE LODGE. Just keep us posted so we can all celebrate with you.

Yes ::yes:: he touched many here on the DIS, you know how CATS are.

MAGICinMYHEART, Thanks for the explanation! I will make sure to rub Humphrey's nose to both honor Roy and maybe get some pixie dust for my trip. Your explanation was awsome. Thanks again.

Hm, I am absolutely 100% certain I saw something official at the actual Lodge mentioning a 24 hour pool. I took note of it because based on the info on this thread I had thought the official policy was the pool was closed at night. I wish I could remember where I saw it now...could it have been in reference to something other than the Silver Springs pool? On the 2 nights we were up past midnight we saw people out at the large pool who were still there when we finally went to bed, and on the several days we were up at 7am we also saw lots of people out there. The only times we ever saw the pool closed was when there was a lightening storm and when they were doing some kind of cleaning or maintenance one morning.

I was there 8/25 - 9/1 and pulled out my welcome packet to see what I could find - and I found what you are talking about. It is on the back of the map/handout titled, "Wilderness Recreation" - NOT "The Silver Creek Star" Directory of Services. There is a list of activities for the month of August, and the following one paragraph explaining the pool (which appears to me to be boilerplate that probably appears every month):

"Silver Creek Springs Pool - Pool and spas are open 24 hours (weather and maintenance permitting; please respect quiet hours 12AM - 7PM). Slide is open and lifeguards are provided 10AM - 10PM (hours subject to seasonal changes)."

As I mentioned previously, lifequards were definitely off duty, and the slide closed, earlier than 10 PM when we were there. One night DD and I went to MK while DH and DS swam (this was around 8:30 at night), and DH later complained to me that some young adults were diving off the rocks and smoking. I told him I would have gone to the desk and gotten security re the diving off the rocks business. They're lucky no one was hurt. Does anyone know - are you allowed to smoke at the pool? Are there designated smoking areas?

I remember FloridaCat from when I was on the boards in 2003 before our first trip. Such a nice man. I didn't know about rubbing the bear's nose :sad2: - should have read the first page of the new FAQ - but there's always next trip. DH appears to have been converted on our most recent one, so I don't think we will wait another three years. :woohoo:

Lots of great information lately. :thumbsup2

Wondering about the scaffolding also. Some of Kelly's pictures showed it on the SouthWing. Wonder if they are just pressure washing the sides or if they are doing rennovations to the outside of the Lodge? :artist:

Looked to me like they are doing more extensive renovations. I think the balconies had been removed.

Wow!!

Thanks for the info. They are really giving the Lodge a true "face lift". :wizard:

Speaking of our "Roy", my DH and I were at the Lodge celebrating my birthday the night he passed away. I didn't know he had passed on until the day after when I read the post about him. I remember the first thing I did when I got there was go and rub "Humphrey's" nose for Roy!! It did feel very special that night. :wizard:

Every time we go now, I still go and rub the nose and say hello to Roy and the MAGIC has been wonderful. He tought us to BELIEVE! :goodvibes

MassMom

Thanks for checking on the Pool Hours I will add this information to the front page so we will have it in the future or until they change it.

To my knowledge there isn't any designated non-smoking areas around the pool, they can smoke if they are outside. There are ash trays located on many of the tables.

We were there last week and the door nearest our room was right by the edge of the scaffolded (did I make up a word?) area. Several times, as we passed by there was a VERY strong smell - it smelled like adhesive to me but DH said shallac (sp?) - as in waterproofing the exterior wood, which would make sense...(we used to treat our wood deck every year or so..)

We were there last week too - and on the nights we went to the pool the guards left at 8pm. Sure of it as DS 7 was NOT happy about the closed slide.
Guess the "fall"season had begun...

Yes, those were the ones!! We saw them in the hall too, one day - then they were put in our room the next day. We were on the second floor -maybe they are working there way up?

(I think the pic over the round light was maybe a coyboy on a horse? When I download my pics I'll try to post one. My husband laughed when I took it and announced that the people on the Dis boards mgiht want to see them!)

It did add alot of light to the room too. :sunny:
