The New Teachers Looking for Jobs Support Thread!

Don't come to Ca for a job. They pinkslipped 130 teachers in my district alone. Cuts are happening all over the state even to tenured teachers. I don't agree with tenure in any way but never like to hear about people losing their jobs.

Oh, oh me!!!

I got a job about three weeks ago :)

I applied for 6 jobs, got two interviews but got to cancel the second interview because I got the job at the first interview - which was lucky because that was the job I wanted!

I am so excited, it's at a lovely lovely school! I start September 1st!

No luck in the Tampa Florida area. Too many teachers for too few positions.

Relocating isn't an option, so I'm not sure what I'll do if I don't find a job. Subbing doesn't pay enough.

No luck here either--One of the schools i interviewed with has a board meeting this week so i was told to check the website to see if names were mentioned--but i think if i was being mentioned, i would have gotten a phone call.
I guess if i dont find a job ill have to sub--youre righ, too many teachers and not enough jobs!

Count me in! I finished my student teaching in January and subbed for the remainder of the school year in a few districts (mostly in the district where I student taught). It actually kept me pretty busy because that district in so big (12 elementary schools, 2 middle schools, 2 high schools) so I pretty much had an assignment every day. I had an interview a few weeks ago for a full-time position but unfortunately didn't get it. :worried: So I'm still looking! Good luck to everyone else in the same boat as me!

I just got my student teaching assignment on Friday. My university was supposed to give out assignments on April 24th- but many were delayed.

I will be in the most urban district in my county and in an ESL classroom with my dual writing major. I'm glad to actually be using my dual major!

Good luck to everyone.

I am a high school math teacher in the Chicago suburbs and we had 7 :scared1: openings this year for various reasons. We are a brand new school and there are more schools opening up in more rural areas, soon-to-be suburbs farther west. I can only imagine that there are openings.

And I sit in on interviews if anyone has any questions. I can certainly tell you the oops-wrong-answer answers.

Ask here or PM. I hate going on interviews! That was the hardest part. And you'd think, as teachers, we all have pretty good personalities.

I feel really bad for all of you!

Bumping this up to see how the new teachers searching for jobs are doing. I hope everyone has found what they were looking for!

I finally got a job offer in a 2nd grade classroom. Unfortunately, it's only a 1 year temp position, but I feel fortunate to have found a job. Hopefully it turns into a permanent position.

My school district said that they have only 1/3rd of the number of openings that they did last year. It's a tough job market right now.

Seven year/Michigan teacher here... pink slipped. Over 200 were pink slipped in my district. I found out July 3rd. I had fallen through the cracks due to teaching special education, as a favor for our principal, for two years w/o sp ed certification. Now I've lost two years of reg education seniority.

Come to Michigan for our great scenery and fantastic hockey playing, but not for the teaching jobs!

my sister just qualified as a teacher, shes had nine interviews and hasnt go a job yet. she has been told a few reasons why she didnt get the job, as follows

one principal told her the candidate she came second to had youth on their side!!! my sister is 37! lready had her kids and is setteled down

and three times she has been told the other candidate got the job because they needed a male teacher

neither of which is actually legal to turn a person away for over here

I feel so sorry for her, she has worked herself to the bone for this. She has one more interview before the school holidays start and I hope she gets it

Hey, I didn't get a job because "your G.P.A. is too high." Yeah, we wouldn't want to hire somebody that actually shows they understand the subject, now would we?

Hockeymom - :grouphug: & :sad1: & then  that you would lose those years of seniority because you were classified as special ed.

The school where I work has an opening for academically gifted teacher. The person must be AIG certified. PM me if you want more details.

I did not get the jobs i interviewed for. I was told that i scored very high on the interview, but there just were not enough oepnings

While pretty much guaranteed a job in our school, my student teacher last fall still did the interview thing. She had one school, of which she had a THREE HOUR second interview, tell her that she was "too qualified" or something like that. They were going to go with someone else they felt wasn't going to be able to get a job as easy as she was.

So we took her instead. Their loss.

Hey our teachers are about to go on strike I think? Come to NJ we need some teachers and we pay pretty well I think.
Oh and by come to nj I don't mean live here (it's crazy expensive) just work here. lol

I, too, am a teacher looking for a job in NJ. I'm in southern NJ (I live in Cape May County), and am certified in Elementary Ed (K-8) and Middle School Social Studies. I graduated in May 2005, and am still looking. I've done a few long-term sub positions that I've LOVED, but nothing permanent has opened up. Elementary Ed in this area is very hard to break in to.

Good luck everyone!

Relocating isn't an option, so I'm not sure what I'll do if I don't find a job. Subbing doesn't pay enough.

I'm looking in NJ too. My certification is very narrow (HS Business) and I'm finding out that those jobs generally go to a guy who they really want as the football or soccer coach so they throw them the job as marketing teacher or in the computer lab so he can coach. (Happened TWICE)

I'm actually starting to have second thoughts about even doing this...I went alternate route (another strike against me) and so far, the interviews have been fairly awful - kind of like they're forgetting they're dealing with an adult and not a student. They're questioning my motives since I'm doing this as a career change and not as a "calling" right out of college. But I think the nail in my coffin has been that I have not been in front of a classroom.

My husband has told me to go and take more classes so that I can broaden my certification, possibly into K-8, but the thought of even MORE classes at this point  . I don't know. School secretary is even starting to look pretty good right now - similar schedule, lower stress, no homework to grade. Although I have to say they have been one of the rudest group of individuals I've ever encountered.

:grouphug: I am so sorry.

It amazes me how ignorant of the law those who interview are. She wasn't given the job because she is a female? That's totally illegal. And if she was 3 years older, she'd have an age discrimination case.

I can't believe some of the questions I was asked at one job fair. Especially regarding "if I have children". Uhm...none of your business and you aren't legally supposed to ask." No, I didn't say that, but I wanted to.

I'm just like your sister (in upper 30's) and already have had my kids and I am settled down. I see this as a benefit, I won't need time off for having babies, my oldest is in high school and can take care of herself if she's home sick from school, etc. The school that finally hired me still has no idea I have children.

I wish your sister the best of luck. It's hard going back to school with children. And frustrating when you are finally done but are struggling to find a job.

I know a lot of districts do not hire alternate route teachers because there are so many resumes from people that do have the traditional certification. I don't know what part of NJ you are looking at, but there are many urban districts that do hire alternate route teachers. You just have to be willing to go into that type of district.

My district does hire alternate route and actually many of the people that come in stay for a year or two and then move on to a surburban school after they have the classroom experience.

I know - alternate route is kind of looked at as a "fall-back" if they can't find a "real" teacher. My resume and appliation info clearly show I have no classroom experience. Yet I've been called for several interviews and have not gotten the job because I have no classroom experience. So honestly I don't know why we're wasting each other's time going through the interview process if they already knwo they're not going to hire me based on not having classroom experience. The fact that I've got a wealth of other experience and knowledge to pass on, that I'm a mature adult not a 22 yr old recent grad, that I choose to change careers as an adult because it's something that I believe in...non-issue.

Sorry - can you tell I'm frustrated?

Are the people that come for a year or two then leave being offered tenure when they're eligible? Because it could be a case of the district using lower salaried teachers to fill a need then cutting them loose when it's time to commit to them as much as the teachers using the district for experience then moving on. Works both ways, and I'm sure it happens to lots of districts and teachers regardless of how the person became certified.
