The movie vs. the book

Hmmm, really interesting replies! Lots of the movies mentioned are ones I've seen and really liked, but haven't read the books so I can't compare them.

I did think of one movie that I love and read the book after watching. And loved them both equally- "High Fidelity"

The second Jurassic Park made me go wow when Sarah Harding pushes Dawson from under the jeep straight into the mouth of a t rex!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My rule is to never see the movie first because I am always disappointed in the movie, it is never as good as the book, however I do agree with Silence of The Lambs. That was a fantastic book and even better movie.
I also liked the movie version of the DaVinci Code too.

I second Jurassic Park. I loved the movie, but the book was full of technical mumbo-jumbo. The movie also had a lot more humor than the book (if there even was any in the book).

I also agree with the Harry Potter series. I like the movies, but the books contain so much more detail. I'm always a little disappointed about the things they leave out.

But I liked "Jurassic Park" the book much better than the movie. I found the technical mumbo-jumbo fascinating. I guess it depends on your taste.

Can we agree that "Gone With The Wind" is a toss up?

Like others have mentioned, the Lord of the Rings trilogy comes to mind but that's about it.

I'm definitely a book girl.

I agree with Hunt for Red October and Silence of the Lambs.

The only one that popped into my head was Apollo 13.

I was wondering what all the hoopla was with Revolutionary Road because I hated the movie. I should have read the book instead, but now I'm not interested in the least.

I almost always prefer the books to the movies. I seldom watch a movie anymore, would rather read.

If at all possible, I always read the book first..

I really don't care for all of the changes that occur with the movie versions.. Half the time it seems like it's not even the same story! :headache:

We were just talking about this subject during our book club meeting this weekend!

The one that always sticks in my mind where I liked the book and the movie equally was 'The House of Sand and Fog'.

I refused to see 'The Time-Traveller's Wife' over the summer because I loved the book so much and I know the movie won't measure up.

For me, pretty much any novel that was written between about 1790 and 1910 is likely better in film. It's because I hate reading really convoluted run-on sentences, and that was the common style in the late-18th and 19th centuries.

Jane Austen and Edith Wharton are the two authors that come most quickly to mind. Great plots and characters, but often tortuous prose.

I almost always love the book more than the movie, but I liked Bridget Jones Diary movie and In Her Shoes movies more than the books.
