We just returned from our 4th trip to Disneyworld. This was planned as the Lalapalooza trip. Nine nights (3 @SSR (saving points for a trip in November, 1@CR (DS 5 birthday celebration) and the remainder @ a rented villa in the Emerald Isle resort.

Tee times were booked, ADR's were made, and daily plans were mapped out with great care.

The first 3 days went off with out a hitch. SSR was lovely, Epcot was so fun, and dinners were hectic, but enjoyable.

THe Morning of March 28th started fine. We packed up and left our villa at SSR without any problem. We were all very excited to check into the Contemporary for the first time. My 5 year old son is a train nut. He absolutely adores the Monorail, so this stay was part of his Birthday present. The plan was to check in, park, and walk to the Magic Kingdom. We would return at midday for swimming and rest, dine at Chef Mickey's and go back to the MK for the parade and fireworks that evening.

Check in went fine. The CM manning the desk was very sweet. Parking was no problem. We couldn't believe how close we were to the Magic Kingdom. We loaded up the backpack and proceeded to walk to our destination...this is where everything went so horribly wrong.

On the walkway to the Magic Kingdom you reach a crosswalk, crossing a very busy road. We stopped for traffic, but my five year old son was so excited...he ran out into the road, and was struck by a car going about 30mph.

Words cannot express the horror I felt when I saw him. I remember my husband screaming his name out in terror. I remember My son turning away from the car too late. I remember seeing him struck by the car with such force he flew into the air and out of his shoes. I remember my husband running to his limp body and cradling him. I remember calling out to the growing crowd "Call 911" over and over again.

I work in healthcare at a trauma center, and suddenly my emergency assessment skills hit me. A woman in the crowd was a nurse told us to lay him flat on the ground until the Paramedics got there. I knew she was right. After we laid him down I noticed he was unconscious, but breathing. Within a minute he was wimpering, and moving all four extremities. I knew this was a good sign.

The paramedics arrived very quickly. They cut off his clothes to inspect him. He has some minor road rash. He was crying louder now. They placed him on a backboard and put a cervical collar on him. We were in the rig within minutes. They were very good. Once we got in the ambulance I implored them to take us to a level one trauma center. They assured me we were going to a very good facility. On the way to Orlando Regional Medical center they placed my baby on a monitor and started an IV. His vitals were stable throughout the trip, and he was alert, but lethargic.

Upon our arrival at the hospital my son was wheeled into the trauma area where a team of people were waiting for us. The assessed him quickly, took a series of X-rays and got him to the Cat scanner very quickly.

The results of the Cat scan showed a skull fracture and an epidural hematoma. The ER attending physician consulted with a pediatric neurosurgeon, the decision was made to take him to surgery at nearby Arnold Palmer Children's hospital.

If I take anything out of this experience it is sheer gratitude

First, the staff at ORMC and Arnold Palmer, not to mention the EMS staff. They were so adept and professional. From the Paramedic that was able to start an I.V. on a squirming, terrified 5 year old in the back of a moving ambulance. To the staff at ORMC that had my son in the cat scanner within 15 minutes of arrival. To the neurosurgeon who decided to operate and had my son in the OR within an hour. This type of efficiency saves lives.

Second, Disney was amazing. My other 2 children witnessed the accident, and my 7 year old daughter was terrified. The guest relations manager from the Contemporary drove my husband and children to the hospital, watched them in a waiting area, fed them, and arranged for another wonderful person from Disney to come and keep them occupied while my husband and I were with our son, and waiting out the surgery.

Disney also drove my husband and children back to the Contemporary (I stayed in the ICU room with my son) after the surgery. They placed them in a room on the 12th floor with a view of the Magic Kingdom in which they had placed balloons and stuffed Mickey's for the kids. This was needed to take the horrific memories from the day out of the forefront of the kids minds.

But mostly I am grateful for the chance I have been given to realize just how precious my family is to me. It is a bit sad that it took this to bring it to light, but I am not wasting it. I realize now how lucky I am to have three healthy children...no, they are not perfect...they fight, whine, pester etc. but they are mine and I love them to pieces!!!

My son was realeased from the hospital 2 days later. His recovery after discharge has been just amazing! He gets tired easily, and is sore, but almost back to 100%.

I guess I just needed to share this story because I had been obsessing over all of the little details of my trip just like we all do. Plans, ADR's et al...but I left Orlando today not reminiscing on how I beat the crowds, or scored a pic with an elusive character, or maximized the dining plan. I left happy to be returning home with the four people I love most in the world. It could have been so bad. I left knowing how your life can change in an instant, and knowing that every day is a gift to be treasured, weather you are at Disneyworld, or holding your son in your arms in a hospital bed, or driving down the road listening to your kids argue in the backseat. It's all good because truly, people are the only thing that can't be replaced.

Last, I swear...I don't want to get too preachy...A few pics

Oh my goodness I am so sorry to hear this happened to you! Your little boy is precious, I could never imagine. I am so relieved he is going to be ok. Poor little guy:guilty: And you are right, we take so much time worrying about all the things we are going to do in Disney we forget the things that are really important to us sometimes. Again I am so glad to see him smiling in that last pic, you truly had me almost in tears reading your story.

I don't even know how to put into words what to say. I am so happy to hear that your son is doing so well after such a horrible accident. God bless him, you, and your family.

I sat reading your post today with tears streaming down my face, I can't begin to imagine what that was like for you all, I have 3 kids myself, and you are so right, some days they drive you mad! and it takes these things to realise how precious they are.

Thank godness your son is doing ok, good to hear that the disney staff looked after your family so well, the horror for everyone must of been tough.

Wishing you and your beautiful family nothing but good things from now on!

Take Care

:goodvibes

I too had tears in my eyes when I read this story. What a horrible thing to happen. I am so glad to hear that he is doing so much better. Thank you for putting things into perspective. You are so right, children whine and cry but I would so rather hear that than have to imagine the silence if they didn't do that??!!

Oh my goodness Deide. I clicked into your report because the title caught my eye (:thumbsup2 ) and my heart began pounding as I read your story! How absolutely awful for you all. But how amazing that it turned out ok in the end, and a horrible tragedy was avoided. I am so glad that your son is going to be all right, and that the right people were there at the right time to make sure he would be.

Wow. Thank you for sharing your story ... it really does remind us all to not get too worked up about the small stuff.

Deide-

Thank you for the reminder that we all must live each day to it's fullest and charish even the smallest of our daily pleasures. You were very thoughful to share your story with all of us! I am greatful that you did...

I wish your son the best for his recovery, your other children the courage to remember...but to move on, and you & your husband strength to never forget how precious all of our children are.

It is wonderful that Disney was there to help the pain for your other children. I'm sure it was one of the best places they could be, besides with close family.

I will share this story with my son... Thank You...

You are in my thoughts.

I'm with everyone else - tears streaming. What an amazing experience - what a blessing that your son is recovering so well. How wonderfully your family was cared for all the way around.

Definitely not preachy at all.

Thank you for the reminder. And - thank you for sharing your story. You know what really matters - and you have reminded us.

Leah

Thanks to everyone for their kind words and thoughts.

I was hesitant to post the story, it seems like such a private thing for a public message board...but most everyone here is so kind and friendly, and I felt the need to tell our tale. It is cathartic to put my feelings into words.

I also knew the people here would have a special perspective. This situation would be horrifing in any location, but it was somehow worse happening within spitting distance of the Magic Kingdom. But ironically, it was probably a blessing happening on property, because the Emergency services responded within minutes. I don't know if that would have been the case off property.

I still start crying at the drop of a hat. Yesterday we stopped at guest services at Downtown Disney. I needed to upgrade our tickets to non expiring as we didn't use many of our park days. The cast member asked me what happened and I explained our situation. She upgraded our tickets at no charge, which I did not expect, and I started bawling again. Truly people are so kind it's amazing!

thanks for sharing your story! i have been so wrapped up in my disney planning that i haven't spent anytime with my son. so now i must go in and watch star wars (again) with him.

thanks for the reminders!

Sorry for stealing your title. I went round and round on what to title the trip report, and this just suited my overall feelings regarding our experiences. Thanks for understanding.

Thank you for posting your story and making us all realise there are more important things than ADR's and touring plans, to treasure every moment and I'm now off to give my DD's an extra big cuddle. Hope your DS makes a full recovery :goodvibes:

Thank you for the wonderful gift you have given us all, the reminder to take time and love the people around us. So glad to hear that your son is ok and recovering. Thanks for sharing your story!

:grouphug: from my family to yours

wow, we just stayed at CR and we walked to the Magic Kingdom so I know exactly the road that you cross. So glad you son is doing fine.

I'm so choked up I don't even know what to post. So I'll just say this: I'm so sorry that happened to you. I think we all (I know I do) get caught up in the planning, etc. that we forget the important things... our families, our children. I'm so, so happy that your son is going to be ok and I know that your family will take this experience and grow from it. We all will, and I thank you for sharing your story.

I am so glad that your son is recovering well, what a horrifying thing to have happen. I am so glad to hear Disney stepped up to the plate and did what they could. That is the Disney we all know and love so much.

Thank you for posting your story, it never hurts to be reminded how lucky we are for what we have.

:grouphug:

I'm so sorry your son had to endure such a horrific ordeal - you all had to endure it - but I'm very glad that he's making such a great recovery. :grouphug:

I don't really know what to say either...just that I am glad your son is well. You have really made me think about some things today and I thank you for that.

I wish your son a speedy recovery. :grouphug:
