My son enjoyed it. It can take some time, but if you do it in between rides it works well. You can get a new pack of cards each day for each person in your party. Sign up at the firehouse.
The portals are on main street, also near the carousel and near liberty square.
It's a lot of fun and if you get bored with it, you can always stop playing. The cards are a nice souvenir to take home. If you like interactive games like Sorcerer's, you may also want to consider doing one of the Pirate adventures in Adventureland. You can get the maps in a little building on the path between PoTC and Splash.
It depends on what you consider a waste of time & how much time you get to spend when you are in the parks. I personally could never get super into it just because I hate waiting in line to do it lol (there always seems to be a buildup of 1-2 families at each spot) but some people love it and have every card!
