Ok...yes, it is a big deal that a plane slid in for a landing. And it appears that one young person died, very sad. And I can imagine the horror of the people in the plane and the vicinity. Yes, that is a big news story. So let us know what happened and cover breaking news regarding the situation as it happens.

However.....

This happened how many hours ago and they STILL have a live,split-screen coverage of a shot of the plane sitting on the ground with the police lights flashing, etc while they show other news programs in progress....why? I mean, NOTHING is happening. The plane isn't going to suddenly do something. There is nothing to see but snow, flashing lights and a parked plane.

My goodness, the media is getting more and more ridiculous every day.

Actually, I take that back...you can't even see the plane. It's just a shot of a police cruiser with the lights on, snow falling and you can see officers walk by every now and again....i guess the plane is somewhere in the background.

ITA. Slow news day apparently.

This is what happens when you have 24 hour news networks. The same thing happened when that plane couldn't get it's wheel down. They covered it for hours and talked to people who said the same thing but MSNBC was the first to tell us that the wheel came down. That was great but it was hardly worth all that coverage.

Wait a minute. I thought you were referring to the plane that crash landed. I haven't heard of this carsh landing. I must go to Fox News now and check it out.

Let's face it, there hasn't been any MAJOR breaking news lately and these networks really do thrive on breaking news.

LOL...well, it's a new acronym. It stands for "Creative Anchormen Rig Societal Hysteria"

Holy jaded television-viewer...

This is exactly why I left television news. I was a cameraman (er...woman), for a 24 hour news channel in NY for 5 years (I was even nominated for an Emmy for my work). I was there for 9/11. I lost friends. I left the business when I realized that I was no longer affected by it. When someone dies, and I am indifferent to it, then something is tragically wrong.

A child is dead. A terrible accident has occurred. If it was your family on that plane or in that car, I bet you wouldn't be complaining about the coverage.

Are you saying that, if a family member of mine were involved in a horrible accident, that I would be happy to see it on the news? That I would want pictures of my injured loved ones shown to the entire country?

I'm not trying to be nasty here; I really don't understand what you're saying.

the worst part about it is the fact that they come on with these breaking news stories and they have no clue what is really going on. I would rather they wait a bit, get some facts correct and then come on to report it. Last night CNN had the boy at 8 years old, Fox had him at 4 and today we know he was 6 (not that age matters when a child dies, it is just tragic) but it shows the fact that they need to not just jump on stories. the other best part is how they are saying that they are looking into weather was a factor!!!! :confused3 It was snowing pretty hard, run way was slippery, the plane circled for a half hour before landing...gee was weather a factor? You think? Then we got to see the reporter standing there trying to talk with the train going behind him, blowing it's whistle..so the reporter said..."with the train going by we won't be able to see the plane for a bit" (paraphrasing there)

It's not even a "crash" landing.. The plane landed fine - just slid off the runway..

Very tragic, but I'm not sure what the continuing live coverage was supposed to accomplish..

Maybe they think David Copperfield is going to show up and make the plane *disappear*... Personally, the only TV news I watch is my local and The Daily Show.

Sometimes I get fed up with 24 hour news also. When I do I simply change the channel or turn off the TV. That being said, there are times when I haven't been home to watch TV and am glad that I can tune in and find out the latest news. I must admit it is funny to watch them trying to "create" something new to talk about.

This is one of the many reasons I don't watch television. News coverage is mostly sensationalism and manipulation. I heard about this inicident briefly on the radio. The media is there because they know that people sit in front of their television, watching it over and over again, like people gawking at accidents. No thanks.

I agree with you PAW. I think it was absolutely correct having the "breaking news" coverage for most of the evening news last night. But when I got up this morning and saw that they were still rehashing it with cameras still pointed to the site I was like "my goodness, can they beat this thing to death or what?" Of course, I definitely WANT to hear what happened when the investigation is over, but is it really necessary to have 12 hours of constant analysis on the media?

Another thing that the news does at (least at the local level) is when they have to have that local connection. "So and So Jones dies in Timbuktu today while driving erratically on a freeway. So and So once lived in Florida for 2 weeks as a young child." or something similar. Like that will make people listen harder just in case they knew So and So. :confused3

I hate that. And EVERY city I have ever lived in does it.

Coverage? What coverage? I don't see showing a split screen image of police cruisers and snow, for HOURS and HOURS, as news coverage. It is redundant, not informative on any level and quite frankly...lazy.

I agree with you PAW and if I had lost a loved one in that crash, it would not comfort me one bit to look at a police cruiser or even the plane for hours.

Oh, and while I'm at it, if anything does happen to someone I love, no reporter had better shove a microphone in my face and ask me how I felt when I found out. I'm mild mannered but I swear I will just start shouting every dirty word I've ever heard in my life. Let them put that on the air. I think that is a disgraceful and cruel thing to do to people who are grieving.

If my child died, I would be begging them to stop covering it, and stop exploiting the death of my child for the sake of ratings.
