Oh crap. Do I have anything good from that year?

The year is 1992. I have graduated with a BS in Elementary Education, but because dh is still in school working on a psychology degree, and we were living together at the time and I was not wishing to leave him, I made the very costly and somewhat dubious decision to go to graduate school. We had always had plenty of financial aid, both being from poor backgrounds with good GPAs and I found the plug pulled now for graduate school. So I took loans.

Anyway, we moved into a townhouse with 3 bedrooms..........my brother, our friend, and dh and I (who was not dh then). Christmas came, and I decided what we needed was a puppy. Brilliant, yes? So, dh liked Siberian Huskies. I found a guy in the paper, he had one male left. Drove to meet him halfway and the puppy was in the back of his truck. A sable male with blue eyes, and a full spiral on his tail. Beautiful dog. I bought him then and there. Took him home and settled him in a corner of our bedroom so dh could see him when he got in. Dh was so pleased and happy to see the beautiful dog. Our fave band at that time was Guns N Roses, so the puppy was named Axl.

That's the cute part of the story....................

That's the year I graduated from HS!

I tried to read a little of that thread, but I just can't get into it. I have no clue what is going on over there.

The rest of the story.................

Summer came, and I had no choice, I had to return home for the time being. I brought the dog with me, and another we'd acquired that had followed my brother home one day. I got sick.

Every morning, my dad would wake me for chores. I was so sick, at one point, I ate only two bites of chicken in a 5 day period.

My dad came one morning and I said I wasn't going out there, I was sick. He said I'd better get my you know what out there so I did. I collapsed in the grass and started vomiting. He told me to get my you know what back to bed.

Meanwhile, I was having a pain in my right side that wouldn't stop. Now it was swelling there, so I drove myself to town and told my mother I had to go to the clinic. So she locked the business early and took me down, as I didn't think I could drive more right then.

The clinic PA told her to immediately take me to the hospital. This is a 2 hour drive. Mom was questioning the PA if it was really necessary, as she had planned to reopen the business and could she wait until closing. He told her no, it couldn't wait.

More?

I just checked the 15 day forecast for our trip. The warmest day looks like 83* then falling into the 70's  .

I haven't seen that movie....don't laugh. I'm not into movies...I prefer books.

So we drove 2 hours over the mountain to the hospital. They couldn't decide what was the matter with me. There were 5 doctors there at one point. They did some um, exams, that were none too pleasant, and debated. One though appendix, the others thought I wasn't in enough pain and it must be an ovarian cyst.

They decided to admit me, on the maternity floor, to do exploratory surgery the next morning. After I was taken in for surgery and woke up, they explained my appendix had ruptured, at least 2 and maybe 3 days before. They were all amazed I hadn't been in more pain and said I was very sick. I had to stay in the hospital for a week and a half, I think.

My parents, of course, had the business and the farm, and stayed home. They came to get me at discharge. I learned to love morphine during this stay, as I had a machine to give me some when I wanted it........nice stuff. They couldn't close the wound from surgery, as they had to clean it out daily. They'd pack gauze into it, and then when they'd pull it out to change it, man, that would burn like fire.

Finally, they closed it and I was discharged. Wanna know about arriving home?

I am planning on wearing capri pants all week. Think I'll be OK or too hot? My tan is long gone, and I am now Casper white.

Okay, when I got home I found that life had gone on without me. What a rude awakening, I thought it was all about me before that........

Anyway, all my friends had gone on our annual river canoeing trip without me. We did this every year on the Illinois River in Tahlequah. Both my brothers had also gone. I had always been before, and I was bummed.

When I got home, and I saw the chicken tied around my beautiful dog's neck, fear struck me. There in the country, chicken killers are often shot outright. My dog had killed some chickens and when I got home had nasty rotten chicken tied to his neck and my dad wouldn't let me take it off as it was "teaching him a lesson". But it wasn't my dad's chickens he'd killed. It was the neighbor's. It was a BIG deal. Chickens can lay so many eggs, raise so many other chickens, that killing one outright is not a good thing. My dad had to replace the ones killed with some proven laying hens from his own flock. To this day, all MY dogs are marked. I always have to chain my dogs when I go down there (no one else does), because I own chicken killers.........no matter that poor beautiful Axl is long gone.

An air conditioner had been installed in my room in my honor. The dr.s had told my parents I needed it, and it was the first one we'd ever had. That was nice.

And my car had been sold. HOWEVER, this was the FIRST time and one of the few times, I stood up for myself. I refused to sign the ownership over. I would not take the money. There was LOTS of threats and screaming and general bullying, but I wouldn't budge. My money had been stolen from me to buy that car to begin with (another story for another time), and darned if I was going to let that be taken from me too.

That's it, end of story, the time I realized the frailty of life and time.

Goodnight Trisha.

Where the heck is everybody???????

Am I gonna have to go ingratiate myself over on those U.K. threads again??? At least they're up!!!
