The Mad Chatters thread Part 5

Paige, any suggestions for a struggling speller? AND NO...even though I have terrible spelling I do not mean myself...I mean ds2.

Do the jester :jester: and the joker :joker: look like they dressed to match? Or is it just me?

So glad you clarified............ :rotfl:

Well, spelling is a hard one, it almost seems as if they can do it effortlessly or they can't do it no matter how hard they try.

There are some things...............reading, for one, gets them to internalize spelling words if they read by sounding out and not by sight. Sight readers have more trouble with spelling. There's a program called Sing Spell Read and Write.........in it, there are posters of common dipthongs and blends and a song that goes along.............or for orbit, sh for shell, sing along and learn this well, ch for chocolate and for child, ir er ur the rooster's wild. It has 4 verses and seems to work really well for my struggling readers and has carried over to spelling. Pretty expensive program, but you are pretty creative, bet you could come up with something yourself using the blends he has the most trouble with.

I also have my kids "make and break" words..............they make a word like battle, then they have a list of others........cattle, paddle, saddle.........they are supposed to try to break the first word and make the next changing the fewest number of letters possible. I bought letter bead sets with square letter beads to do this with..........you can use foam letters........you can write letters on paper and cut them out in little squares...........Anyway, they begin to see the patterns.

Poor you, sorry I was so long-winded. More? I have lots of things in my bag of tricks............

Sorry, I got caught up on a game thread.

Here's the story: Someone started a thread on how their kids always ask what's for dinner, when are we going to eat etc.

I had just happened to get home a little bit late from work that day, and DS-11 immediately asks me as I've got one foot in the house, and one foot still on the porch "What's for dinner?" Having run errands etc., I hadn't had time to "go" in hours, so I replied "Can I pee first?"

Well, little did I know that tag fairys can dig up anything from your past, and tag you with it. I had posted it a few days before the tag actuallyshowed up.

Today was the first day the offending son noticed it, and he said "What's that about?" and I replied "well honey, that's all about you!" :lmao:

Did ya catch that Jay? She was playing GAMES while we waited for our story!

Just playing Elisabeth, good story! :thumbsup2

Um, hello? Did I kill a thread again? I hate it when that happens!

We had Sing Spell Read (and write) last year...it didn't "do it" for him. He is a good sight reader...he has large vocab. and can read Magic Tree House books all by himself (he turned 7 less then a month ago). BUT he cannot spell. He is good at using context to figure out new words and great at remembering all of the words he comes across...but phonics basically never clicked for him. We did that program. I used Saxon phonics (boring and dry). I used Explode the Code (still do, trying to get some phonics base in that little skull). The only program that clicked even a small bit was Headsprout...but even that just helped him on his way to sight reading (even though it was a phonics based program) instead of helping him learn to truly decode. I suppose I should not complain. He is a great reader. I just worry about the spelling and nothing seems to click.

Thanks for the suggestion of the word break ups. I will pull out the foam letters tomorrow and start the new game...I trick my kids all the time. One day they are going to have someone tell them that half of the games I play with them "after school" are really part of school! Hee hee hee.

I thought I was able to multi-task, since I have 4 kids, but apparently I'm not as good as I thought! :goodvibes

Yeah, you've got a hard core little sight reader there..............I always tell my parents of those that it's fine, they really do learn to get along in the world even if they need spellcheck.......... :thumbsup2

That's because having kids sucks brain cells...yep, that's my story and I'm stickin' to it!!

Paige, you are such a great resource...you should be the teacher that teaches other teachers...and I am not being sarcastic one little bit. :thumbsup2

:butterfly This butterfly (or flutterby as ds2 likes to call them) looks like one a hippie painted after a "trip" and I don't mean a vacation!

Well, thanks, but I felt a little sheepish after your answer. Decided next time I'd better ask you what you've tried first! :rotfl:

To get him through, it has to be drill and kill..............no fun, but he just has to memorize them. Usually they lose the rule after the test, though, so that's not a long-term solution, but it helps them see they can do it if even for a short time...............marker board, chalk and sidewalk, sand in a tray..........as many varied ways you can find of writing and rewriting his words will get him through to his tests.

:hippie: Look...it's the artist!! And he is even out "trippin" with his flutterby friends!!
