Does anyone have any news on the Lone Ranger movie that is to be made by Disney. My kid is 3 yrs old and has been watching the old black and white shows. He is a Ranger nut now.

the current theory is that the movie will be released in summer 2012. Johnny Depp will be Tonto and Gore Verbinksi as director (see a theme?). Those seem to be the most solid rumors, after that who knows. I did read George Clooney once for the title. I also heard Josh Brolin but who knows

There has been very little buzz about it in the trades. As of last October, it was still said to be on a "distant backburner", and Depp has at least one post-Pirates project in the queue before that (Dark Shadows), possibly two (Oz, also for Disney).

I don't know the exact origin of his horse's name, but IIRC the silver bullets were a reminder to him that he shouldn't shoot indiscriminately - life is precious, like silver, and shouldn't be squandered.

Yes, I had a Lone Ranger six-shooter cap gun (I think it was a "Colt 45") and "silver" bullets as a kid.

I think that was an explanation used in a later movie (early 80s I think...too busy to look it up ), but from what I understand it is quite inaccurate...the silver, being harder than lead, isn't able to take up the spin of the rifling as easily, and therefore results in a much wider spread. I think the MythBusters covered that one.

Didn't the LR inherit a silver mine as well?

I'll note that I know of nothing that specifically ties Silvercup as the reason for the names...they may have chosen to sponsor because of the names...

Good question. I myself have a hard time imagining a cowboy hero riding around on a Silvercup.
