Trivia

Silver shoots straighter, further and is more accurate.
Everyone who guessed where not even close.
Hint. It has something to do with commercials.

............and the answer is?
One more hint, then I will talk.
It is "bread"
Ah, no, I remember now...it was a bread company called Silvercup, that had some merchandising tie-in. Trading cards I think, WAY in the early comic days.

Some research does show that Silvercup was the first sponsor of the radio show, and it is generally believed that they named the horse Silver as a way of in-program advertising...but why didn't they name him Silvercup? Less certain is the reason for the silver bullets.
Completely side trivia - the Silvercup Bread facilities in New York became the Silvercup Studios in 1983, and used for filming many TV shows and movies - but perhaps most dramatically featured in the movie Highlander, where the penultimate fight scene involved destruction of the iconic sign on the roof.
