The i hate twilight thread!

I'm a huge Twilight fan...yes, the books are for young adults, I'm a 40 yr old! Maybe the writing style lacks a bit, but it's a love story & about making a choice-I guess people get what they want out of it-my opinion has always been if you don't like it, don't look or put yourself in the situation that will expose you to it. But just like others have said-anyone that is a fan of something can be so obsessive it's sick....I guess like me & Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse & Breaking Dawn...LOL!:goodvibes

I used to be obsessed, but now I don't like it.

I quit liking it when the movies were made.

I am glad that most of you that don't like it have actually read the book. For those that have NOT read the books have no room to say you don't like it when you haven't even read it.

I'm on the "hate it" wagon. I read the first one to vet it for DD12, and because a friend of mine, who normally reads non-drivel, gushed on and on about it. Yuck.

I have a huge issue with "foreshadowing" that doesn't foreshadow anything. Why on earth is such a point made about how clumsy Bella is, in almost every chapter, but that never plays into the plot? Is it supposed to make her endearing to vampires in a sort of wounded-animal-easy-to-cut-from-the-herd kind of way? Maybe it's followed up in the other books, which I never bothered to read :confused3

That's just one example of what I condsider really, really bad writing. And ITA with PPs who talk about the bad example of romance for young girls.

I told DD she could read it if she would then write an essay explaining why Bella and Edward are poor examples of a healthy relationship, and what is wrong with the writing in general. She got so much flak at school for not reading the books that she finally took me up on my conditions. Or started to. After two chapters she said it was the dumbest book she'd ever read and that was it.

FWIW: Pride and Prejudice is out in a nifty paperback version with a black cover and red flowers on it. She read that next and got all sorts of approval from her peers who were, truly, judging a book by its cover.

Don't know anything but the horrid faces of those people that adorn every paper, magazine on every newstand and turn my stomach.

15 mins of fame my foot, GO AWAY!!! :scared:

I read the first one, because dd13 was reading the series, and I'm ashamed to admit, she loved it (I have a BA in English, and love to read, and they are painful).

I'm even more bothered by the fact that most of DD10's friends have read the series. WTH are 4th graders doing reading this stuff? Do they really need to have their perceptions of "love" influenced by this drivel? :rolleyes1

That's why I didn't let DD read the books when they first came out. A lot of her friends read them, but I didn't like the desperate love message it seemed to give off, especially for a 4th grader. She is starting middle school this year and if she asked again I would be OK with it, because we could have a conversation about my problems with it. But she is into books about the holocaust right now, so i don't think she will ask anytime soon.

Count me in on the "hate" it wagon. I can appreciate trash novels (I wouldn't make it through a week at the beach without them), but I cannot imagine how such a poorly written series has garnered such attention. :confused3

Most of the PP's have already expressed the problems with the themes & writing that drive me crazy with this "obsession."

- The whole Mary Sue situation is enough to make any fan of literature vomit multiple times.
- Edward, regardless of his looks, has a lifetime of experience in how to mold/seduce women. He is, essentially, an old man seducing a young girl. :sad2:
- The theme of wanting what you love, regardless of consequence, is a very dangerous theme to be disseminating to the audience (mainly young girls) who are at the very early stages of understanding how love/life work.
- The repetition in the books is ridiculous. Yes, we learned Edward was beautiful the first 8000 times you wrote it!

The list could go on and on...much like the pages and pages of useless text explaining Bella and Edward staring at each other.

So, to the OP, you are not alone in your bewilderment about how such a poorly written series became such a "craze." There are plenty of other vampire tales that are superior in content and in their writing style. I always recommend the original Bram Stoker's Dracula to "Twi-hards" and most are astounded as to how much better Stoker weaves his tale, when compared to Ms. Meyer.

I can't say I hate it because I've never read any of the books nor seen any of the movies. But I will say it doesn't interest me at all.

Another good one is Robin McKinley's Sunshine. It is McKinley's worst book (IMO) but still pretty good and as DD says "a million times better than Twilight)

Yes, Twilight fans can be just as annoying as some Disney fans.

People wonder why some folks constantly visit DW, year after year (or multiple times during the same year), and those DW lovers wonder why some folks just aren't into DW like they are.

Everybody has different interests, different perspectives, etc. ... why do you even care? :confused3

It's not my kind of reading at all, but that doesn't mean I think people who enjoy them shouldn't be allowed to talk about them..:confused3

I'm sure not everyone likes the types of books I read either..:)
I have to agree.

OP, I'm not a Twilight fan either but there are certainly more threads on the DIS that I'd rather not be bothered by than the Twilight one.

To each his own. :)

Count me in as a hater. My mom (age 66) is obsessed.

Maybe I just don't "get it", but I just don't see what is so great about this Twilight stuff. The movies are almost unwatchable. Maybe this third one will be better, but the 2nd one made me doze off in the theater. But, to each his own.

Although I will admit that Robert Pattinson is not too hard on the eyes ;)

Something I find entertaining is the fact that this series has managed to cause such strong and passionate reactions out of so many different people.

There are the fanatics who have a real, unhealthy obsession with it, and then I see people who are so devoted to hating it. I don't understand - doesn't harboring this kind of emotion (whether it's obsession or hate) feel like a full-time job? Why does it bother you this much?

There are so many more important things in life that could use this kind of passion and attention. I wish more people cared about the oil spill in the gulf like they care about Team Edward/Team Jacob/Team OMFG-I-hate-Twilight-and-it-needs-to-die.

:confused3

I have to live with a whole house full of twilight fanatics, talking about all day & all nite:headache: Mary

Isn't that the truth!! :thumbsup2

Agreed.

I haven't even read the books and have only seen the first movie. I did like the movie. It's not great by any means, but I enjoyed it.

I often wonder how people can go on and on about "Lost" or about so called reality shows that's nothing more than about manipulating other people in certain situations.
But that's me.

Eventually, the hype will die down and something new will come along. Some will love it, others will hate it.

If that was directed to me, I don't. If it wasn't (and I don't think it was), I agree.

I can't stand the books or the movies either...poorly written stories about Poser Vampires...In my opinion they are just Goth Kids with Super Powers (and by Goth I mean the American Pop Culture term, not the Germanic tribe or Popular 16th Century Western Architectural style :lmao: )....On the other hand the Anne Rice Vampire novels, Vampire Diaries and the Charlene Harris novels (True Blood) are amazing comparatively speaking......

Finally read them - well almost - I have read three of four. I will read the last one. They are just okay for me. Mildly entertaining, very light reading - but I have to agree on the writing. I don't read any YA - so I assumed the crazy repetitiveness was to get points across to this age group.

I found Bella to be a fairly unappealing character. I couldn't figure out why all these people seemed to love and risk their lives for this rather boring, unfriendly, clumsy, sullen teenager.

I enjoyed some of the history of the wolves and vampires. I was a big fan of Ann Rice's Vampire series (Interview with the Vampire) and I did enjoy that much, much more.
