Okay, so this is my very first attempt at writing one of these. In fact, I've never been to WDW before! Growing up, my parent's idea of a "family vacation" was driving 30 miles to Six Flags for the day, and maybe staying at a Howard Johnson for one night. I don't think I even knew that a place like WDW even existed. To put it short and sweet, I was neglected as a child when it came to vacationing. So I've made it my personal goal to make sure that I do NOT follow in my parent's footsteps. In fact, I've actually convinced my parents to come along for the trip, and let's face it, with three kids, I'll need all the help I can get.
I'll introduce myself first. I'll call myself "Dee Dee" -- a preschool teacher in my late twenties with three kiddos, almost 7, almost 4, and almost 2. I started having kids early, I figure I'll have an early retirement this way, but in reality, I'll be so tired by the time I'm 45, there's no way I'll want to go to Rome. I've decided to settle for all the exotic lands at Epcot instead, close enough! I've always wanted to go to DW. Although I can't say I'm one of those crazy Disney fans, I love vacations and seeing different places I've never been. I love the smell of a clean hotel room, and the feeling you get when you are stepping off the plane into a new city to explore. I love to pack my suitcase and anticipate what I'll need for a trip. Most of all, I love dreaming about the fun I'll have, the memories I'll create with my family, and the excitement I will see in my children's eyes when they are creating memories of their own.
Now, let's introduce the "Gang":
My firstborn is "Belle" -- a true disney fanatic. Loves everything princess, but is also a huge "thrill seeker." Loves big rides, scary stuff, and is my firstborn, so she thinks she deserves just about anything she wants. She has seen the commercials and has begged me to go to DW for at least a couple of years. We took her to Disneyland when she was four and she has her picture with Cinderella framed on her dresser. She's a big, bad first grader and has learned to write her own stories now. So, I'm thumbing through them one day and it's a long, drawn out story of how she's going to WDW. (We hadn't even thought about it then) It took me a while to figure out what she was writing about because she spelled Disney "D-E-E Z-N-E-Y" in her journal, oh too cute! She has a very active imagination, that one. I think I even read a story about her getting "highlights" in her hair once. She is way too eager to be like her mommy. Anyway, after reading her little story, I took it upon myself to check it out. After all, the commercials do say that a family of four can go for $1600.
Kiddo #2 we'll call "Stitch." This is primarily because he is a very active almost 4 year old. Crazy, wild, but also my "cuddle bug." He is as sweet as he is wiley. He loves the power rangers. He has the gear. He has the action figures. He has the mask. He has the movies. He even has the moves. (This is all due to Christmas gifts from loving grandparents who couldn't come up with anything else creative to buy him.) So he is obsessed. He also likes Spiderman, but usually has the Power Rangers fighting a battle with him and ultimately winning in the end. He likes rides and is so excited to go! I just hope he will remember something from the trip- being four years old, I'm just not sure.
Kiddo #3 we'll call Mickey. That's because I have nothing creative to call him. He'll be two in August. He is a "wanna-be" four year old. Always trying to keep up with his big brother. We are leaving for our trip right before he turns two in order to get a "free flight" for him. I know he won't remember a thing but he absolutely loves the outdoors. If I even attempt to open our back door to the backyard, he darts for it. When I don't let him out, it's a fit-throwing tantrum every time. He'll love DW simply because he'll be outside. He's a really well-adjusted toddler. I thought about not taking him, but I would just be way too sad to leave him behind. I know he'll love every minute of it!
Kiddo #4: Okay, by now you're wondering, "I thought she only had 3!" but you were mistaken. I also have a 30 year old child that I sometimes call "honey" or "hubby." But really he's more of a child than a husband. I laugh when I read the trip reports calling their husbands "grumpy" because this is primarily my hubby's feeling on WDW. It's not because he doesn't want to go, it's just he is a stingy, money-hungry kind of guy. I love him to pieces, but he absolutely hates to spend money. Period. He's the kind of guy that is way too practical to be normal. No new furniture, no new cars, no new clothes, "Why buy them new when used is so much cheaper?" I shop at garage sales and second hand stores alot. Thank goodness my mom works at a department store, or I would be in serious trouble when it came to a wardrobe. I could call him "Scrooge" but he isn't selfish with his money, he just really hates to spend it on stuff he would consider "frivolous." When I mentioned WDW, he pretty much said no way. I'm convinced it's only because he couldn't figure out a way to buy a "second-hand" vacation. They don't come used. Only brand-spanking new! By the time I figured this out, I pretty much decided he wouldn't get his cheap way when it came to a vacation. I was finally going to put my second-hand foot down.

So, I start to research. I get on the Internet, I call travel agencies, I buy the Unofficial guide. (Brand new, by the way) We have a ton of reward points through Marriott to use up and have a couple of free nights to spend. I find round trip airfare tickets for around 350 pp. It's still not cheap enough. I can't break the news to hubby until the numbers are just right, but I start to lay the seeds. "Hey honey, did you know we have two free nights with our Marriott rewards to pretty much any hotel we want?" His response, "No." My response, "We could go on a trip this summer and use them." His response: "Sounds good." Right then, he was probably thinking of a four day weekend to San Antonio or Dallas. Little does he know.... a few days later: "Hey honey, can you believe "Belle" is going to be seven in a few months? She is already out-growing her Disney princess stuff. She's started asking for "Bratz" dolls instead!" (which I refuse to buy) His response: "Really?" My response, "It's so sad.... my little girl is growing up all too fast!" His response, ..... silence.
A few weeks pass, and I'm determined to go. I start by mentioning it to my parents. They've never been anywhere. I mean that literally. They do not go on vacations. I think they went on a cruise when I was 5 for a business trip for my dad and my mom threw up the whole time. That was the end of it for them. My whole reasoning is that hubby will want to go if someone else thinks it's a good idea. I know I can convince mom. She's my best friend and my partner in crime. If she and dad go, then hubby will be "suckered" into agreeing. So me and mom begin deliberating. Then suddenly it happens. The promotion for one-way airfare for $88. That means less than $200 round trip for everyone! There has never been cheaper airfare that I've seen. I call mom. We plan our attack.
More on the attack later.....I have dishes to do.

Great start!! I can't wait to see how you attack!:rotfl:

Okay, so the dishes are done. I guess I should explain that I am a neurotic house cleaner. I truly want to put the toys away after the kids have been playing with them for five minutes. So, so sad, but true. I'm working on it, though.
Back to my attack. So, my mom and I have been dreaming about a trip to DW for years. The kids have never been old enough, we've been too far in debt, or we just didn't have the motivation to save the money needed. But, now I have two free nights in a Marriott AND $200 round trip/per person airfare. After calling my mom with the exciting news, we decide to try and lure the males in with our thrifty, all-knowing tactics. We use food.
Yes, both of our slightly overweight husbands are easily persuaded to do something to please us when their bellies are full of their favorite meal. My choice: chicken enchiladas. It's creamy, it's fulfilling, and it takes forever to make. After he sees me slaving away in the kitchen, he has no choice but to at least listen to my reasoning. My mom's choice: chicken fried steak. If you can't tell already, we are all from Texas, and we love our fried steak, especially my dad. Slap some homemade gravy on it and add some mashed potatoes, and he's in high-cholesterol heaven. We chose these two items very carefully, and we were wise to do so.
So this is how my conversation went while I was yet again doing the dishes and hubby was on the computer.
Me: "Oh, honey, you'll never guess what I found!" (by now he's probably thinking I'm talking about his high school ring that mysteriously disappeared about two months ago.)
Him: (very eagerly) "What????"
Me: Well, southwest has some great airfare on sale really cheap right now!
Him: (losing enthusiasm) Really?
Me: Yes, and guess where one of the feature destinations is?
Him: (almost all interest gone) Where?
Me: ORLANDO!!!
Him: Orlando?
Me: Yes! (this is where I begin babbling) And with our two free nights of hotel stay, we could have a super cheap vacation to Disneyworld this summer! I found a Marriott for $89 a night, flights are around $800 total, so that comes to only $1300 for hotel and flights, then that leaves the park tickets which is only a merely $750 more and then food, which we can eat in the hotel for breakfast for FREE, plus FREE shuttles, and we have a refrigerator in the room and can eat lunch at the hotel, and only spend money eating out at night, and, and, and....(I'm out of breath at this point, and sweating)
Him: We can't afford it.
Me: Yes we can.
Him: It will cost us $5,000 to go there!
Me: No it won't!!
Him: Then how much?
THis is where I have him. He pretty much didn't listen to the first ten minutes of my reasoning with him. Like I said, I was totally babbling. So, I calmed down, got my paper with the numbers on them. The hotel, the flights, the car rental, the tickets, the food prices, and the logic to my cheap vacation.
He looked it over.
If he had a question, I quickly answered it.
He kept looking.
And then the big kicker I threw in.
"Oh, and by the way, Mom and Dad might go with us!"
Him: Really???? YOUR mom and dad?
Me: Yes, mom has been dying to go on a vacation with the kids.
Him: (A little reluctant, but excited) Well, let's call them and see!
Me: (wanting to scream out loud but holding it in) Okay!
So we call them, and it turns out mom isn't so lucky with dad. They are in the midst of remodeling their new house and have been spending big bucks in flooring and paint. Disneyworld isn't exactly my dads "dream" vacation. It's not because he doesn't like it. He just doesn't consider it an adult kinda place. Mom said his exact quote was, "Why would we want to go somewhere where we would have to babysit the entire time?" Oh dad, if you only knew what DW holds in store for you!
I was crushed, but hadn't lost hope just yet. There was still time, but not much time. Those plane tickets were going really fast. Two of the flights on the day we wanted to leave were already full for the "promotional fares." I knew I would have to work quickly, but trouble was headed my way,... little did I know that mom would have second thoughts....
Yes, you heard me right. My own "conspirator" was re-thinking the trip. She just wanted to finish her house first. Well, that could take years! I wanted to go now!! I was way too excited after reading all about the rides, the hotels, the meals, the shows!!! I was hooked, and mom was only looking at the dollar signs! Her and dad just didn't have a clue what DW could mean for them!
I began to pull out the big guns. I used it. I didn't want to use it. I was desperate for support. I could feel the trip slipping away from me and I had to do something or it would disappear right before my very eyes! So ..... I......used.......the GUILT TRIP.
Yes, I used it on my own mother and father. I felt like a nine year old begging for a new puppy because I had no brothers or sisters to play with. I had to, though, for their own good. They needed a vacation for various reasons, the first being that they NEVER go on them! They are getting old and I wanted them to go when they can enjoy it.
So this is what I said: (ashamed as I am) Mom, remember when Grandma died and you said you were going to take some of your inheritance money and go on a trip?
MOM: Yes, I know.
Me: Grandma would have wanted you to spend some money on a vacation, because she worked on a farm her whole life, and never got to do that herself!
MOM: I know she would want me to do something for myself with it.
Me: Exactly!
Me: And remember, mom, the kids are getting older, and won't be able to see the "magical" side of DW forever. In a few years, it will be all about the rides to them, not Cinderella's Castle and Pooh.
Mom: BUt your dad...
Me: You can go with us by yourself. And stay in the hotel room free.
MOM: But I won't have fun without your father.
Me: YOu need to go if you want to.
MOM: I would feel guilty.
Me: Do something that makes you happy.
Mom: I'll see what I can do.

Well, what happens in the next week is nothing short of a miracle. My parents go from not going, to maybe going, to for sure not going, to we'll consider going, and finally, hubby and I decide to go ahead and book our tickets.
You may think this is totally because we simply want to go and no way is anyone going to hold us back, but I had a plan. I KNEW if I booked my tickets to go and made the hotel reservations, that my parents would follow suit. I knew in my heart it would KILL my mom to see us going without her. It is her dream to do this with her grandchildren. So we book the $88 one-way trip to Orlando. I call mom to tell her the great deal I got and the hotel reservations we made. Find out how my mom reacts on the next episode of......"The I don't have a clue pre-trip report...."

Okay, so now I'm beginning to figure out that most people do "pre-trip reports" to talk about where they're staying, eating, and what they plan to do. Well, for me, what is way more interesting is how I manipulated my way into actually going. I guess I'll continue on with my story even though I'm technically not doing it the way I'm supposed to. But I can promise anyone who is reading that eventually I will post my "big plans." For now, I need to finish my story.
So, the saga goes on.
Hubby actually agreed to go ahead and buy plane tickets. After three weeks of practically begging him to go, then acting like I don't care, then begging again, he agreed that we should get the airfare while we have the cash. So we did! As soon as we bought our tickets, I called my mom hysterical.
Me: "We bought our tickets! We're GOING TO DISNEYWORLD!!"
Mom: "You bought them?"
Me: "That's what I said!"
Mom: "Oh, I want to GO!!"
Me: "You'd better get your tickets if you want to fly with us!"
Mom: "Your dad doesn't want to go."
Me: "You can go with us by yourself then!"
Mom: "I'm going to go talk to your father."
Right about now I'm so excited that I'm for sure going, I don't really care if they do or not. But I know, that with three kids, it would be a heck of a lot easier if they went with us, and a whole lot more fun! It only takes mom about thirty minutes to call back. She gives me her information, and I book it for her. Dad actually agreed to go with her. Reluctantly, he agreed if we were going, they needed to come along for moral support.
So I try to book mom's flight, and you won't believe this: the $88 one way is sold out. We booked the very last ones left! Mom was devastated! One of the only reasons she agreed to go was because of the cheap airfare. So, this is a lesson for all of you who are procrastinating about buying your cheap flights. Don't hesitate! Buy them before someone else does!!!
She ended up only paying about $120 more than she would have, but she got on the same flight as us. She almost backed out of the whole thing because she had an inclination that it wasn't "meant" for her to go.
So, with our flights on hand, we begin planning. I booked our hotel directly after. We're staying at the Marriott Residence Inn at Lake Buena Vista. I know a lot of people reccommend to stay "in the world" but we just can't afford it. Plus, with a family of five, we need extra room to stretch out our feet. We will be going back to the hotel daily for naps and lunch, and we will have a full kitchen to keep our refrigerated/snack items. The kids will have their own bunkbeds, and hubby and I can have a little more privacy. We also will be renting a minivan for our entire stay, and splitting the bill with the grandparents. Our hotel has a free "hot breakfast" which we know stands to be pretty darn good, due to the fact that we lived in a Residence Inn for two months because of my husband's job relocation. There are also free shuttles, but we would rather pay for parking than wait on shuttles. From what I hear, they aren't as reliable as driving yourself. Did I mention that I'm also somewhat of a control freak?
So, here's our plan:
Arriving at WDW July 11: Hoop Dee Doo Revue 7:00
Day One: Magic Kingdom--ADR to Liberty Tree Tavern
Day Two: MGM--no dinner plans yet. Any suggestions?
Day Three: Animal Kingdom--ADR Boma.
Day Four: Epcot--counter service at San Angel's before Illuminations. (not for sure yet)
Day Five: Universal--(Stitch loves Spidey) no dinner plans
Day Six: Magic Kingdom again--no dinner plans yet
Day Seven: Leave for home

So those are my plans so far. We don't have a lot of dinner plans, and breakfast and lunch are going to be at our hotel to save some cash. (I can actually get my kids to eat better when I cook them something) I really need some suggestions on where to go for dinner. I have four days where there is nothing set in stone. My dad really wants to go to one of those "all-you-can-eat" seafood places. You know, the ones that adverstise lobster, etc. Does anyone have a good experience from one of these? I feel really funny about eating seafood off of a buffet. Talk about ruining our whole trip if you get food poisoning!! I need some feedback about my planning process. I've never been to WDW, keep this in mind! I also don't have a ton of money to spend on food, so I need reasonable prices! I do have the Unofficial Guide, and have researched all the restaurants, but let's face it: it's overwhelming!!!! Any guidance would be great. Also, anyone ever stayed at the Residence Inn LBV? I would love to know some tricks of the trade!
I guess this about does it for my pre-trip report. I promise to write when I have more concrete plans....

Haven't been in a while but you could try 50's Prime Time Diner. You parents will love the nostalgic 50's formica kitchen tables and the small black and white kitchen tv's. Your 'Cousin' will be the waiter/waitress and will be sure to make sure even grandma and grandpa have proper table manners and clean their plate. The food here is definately home comfort food, and even the kids will be able to find something to eat other than chicken fingers.

There's also Sci Fi Diner. You get to sit in a car and stair up at a Drive In Movie Screen. The waiters and waitresses rollerskate around to take orders and serve. Pretty fun and entertaining, not sure that you'll be able to find food to suit everyone here though.

Just some thoughts and ideas. Good luck with your planning

We ate at the Sci-Fi. the place was awesome, little ones might get a kick out of sitting in cars and watching movie trailers while they eat, and the ceilng actually looks like a star lit sky. the food is limited in options, your basic burgers, chicken fingers etc... but DH got the ribs, he said it was ok, they use coca cola in their bar-b-que sauce, at least that's what the waiter said. The portions are huge, the burger had to have been made from an entire cow it was that big. anyway, can't wait to read more and don't worry about the proper protocol for pretrip reports, there really isn't one, and yours is truly entertaining.

Thanks so much for the info! We are having a "family meeting" on Saturday to discuss the eating plans, and I'm going to suggest the Sci-Fi and the 50's Prime Time. My dad will love the big burgers, of course, we're from Texas and love everything in mass quantities. They both sound like great suggestions.

Okay, so the big meeting was last night with the g-parents. It didn't go over well. First of all, I fed them a huge meal of hamburgers, fried okra, f fries, and apple pie for dessert. Big mistake. They were so full by the time we were done, they were ready for bed after they ate. That's what I get for trying to be nice. But in reality, even though they didn't want to talk too long about dining plans or the parks, I got my way. They are literally SO clueless when it comes to WDW, they said they don't care what we do or when we go. So, basically, it's up to me to decide everything! I'm in "control freak" heaven!
Is it just me, or is it utterly impossible to explain to someone who has never been to WDW, nor ever read a book or visited a website on it, to explain to them the vastness? It's IMPOSSIBLE! But, like I said, they don't care what we do, so here's my plan so far. Remember, we are going back to the hotel everyday for lunch, swim, and nap!
Day 1: Arrive at hotel and swim! Dinner at Hoop De Doo Revue! (7:30)
Day 2: Magic Kingdom Dinner at Liberty Tree Tavern
Day 3: Animal Kingdom Dinner at O'hana
Day 4: Universal Studios (gotta have that Spidey!) Emeril's
Day 5: EPCOT Dinner undecided--any suggestions? I need something cheap! (under $60 for the family) I was thinking a counter service at San Angel's in order to get a good seat at Illuminations.
Day 6: Magic Kingdom Dinner at Lobster Buffet (I know, I know...)
Day 7: MGM Dinner at 50's Prime Time, and dessert at Sci Fi
Day 8: Leave for home!
My reasons for changing my last day to MGM is due to the laser/fireworks show will be great as our 'big bang' before we go home, plus, Mom and Dad don't want to go to MK for 2 days, but will possibly go to EPCOT for their 5th park to visit. We really want our "last day at Disney" to be together as a family. It is also my understanding that MGM is a lot of shows, so knowing we will be really tired on our last day, I thought it would be a good idea. Please let me know feedback about these plans! I've never done WDW before!!! I really need advice -- please help me troubleshoot any problems I might encounter!

your plans sound great! I have eaten at Liberty Tree Tavern and it was my favorite meal by far. Sci-Fi has some great desserts, there milkshakes are to die for as is the cheese cake (except they put popcorn and M&M's all over the plate)
MGM for the last park is a good idea, it's a small park and there are street performers every where so even if you take a break from walking to and from shows you are still being entertained.

Thanks--- I really wanted to go to MK the last day, but I'm sure we'll be tired and can't wait for the big bang fireworks/laser show that night. I'm looking for car rental deals right now, and it is so frustrating! They are sooooo expensive. Any advice on cheap rentals???

I haven't heard of a lobster buffet at MK, but the Crystal Palace is great ! It is a buffet with lots of kid foods as well as adult foods. Best part is...Pooh, Tigger, Eeyore and Piglet make rounds to all the tables for signatures and pictures. It is a must do for every trip we take...even when it is just my DF and I, without our daughter !

Fried okrapopcorn:: That is something I miss from living in Louisiana. They just don't know how to make that kind of stuff up here in Washington. :sad1:

I'm so jealous that you are getting to go to WDW with your parents. I tried to get my mom to come with us this christmas (I knew my dad wouldn't and that's ok) but she can't since they are going to the national finals rodeo the week prior. Maybe next time :)

Your plans sound great. We are also planning on going to both the 50's prime time (for lunch) and Sci-Fi (for dessert). we couldn't make a decision between the two so decided to do both.

Hoop-de-doo-revue looks like fun! I'm sure your kids will have a blast

Hope you have a wonderful trip

Well, it's been several weeks since I've written anything about my pre-trip to DW, but I've been a little busy. Besides being a mother of 3 and pre-K teacher, we also bought a new house, I was in our little hometowns production of "Oklahoma!" and recorded a CD through our church! It's been crazy to say the least. But the good news is that my mind has been pre-occupied with other things and the time has literally flown by! Nine days from today we leave for DW! I've never been and I am super excited.
So, how have my plans changed?
Well, I've been doing nothing except for obsessing over what shoes my family and I will wear and the touring plans.
Is this way confusing, or what? I am so overwhelmed with finding the best times to visit each park and which rides to go to first, etc. etc. I had planned on visiting MK on the first full day we are there, but found out it is a "magic hours" day for resort guests. We are staying outside of the world and so now I'm thinking that we will be waiting in lines from the get-go. THis is very discouraging, but I don't want to change my plans due to the dinner reservations we made at LTT. So now, do I get a park hopper pass and visit more than one park on the first day? We weren't going to spend the extra $40 p/p because we saw no need to. We were planning on visiting one park per day to keep it less confusing. Any advice?
Also, does anyone think it is possible to get to all the rides at Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure in one day? We won't be going on any of the big roller coasters, but I'm thinking this is going to be one big waste of money due to long lines. We plan on going to US on a saturday!
So I guess this is more of a question-asking pre trip report other than a real authentic report. We are leaving in nine days and I couldn't be more confused!
One more question... we've bought crocs for most of the family already, but DH and I haven't decided if we need them or not. Are they really necessary, or can we get by with some comfy flip flops?
Thanks for any help!

Six days until we leave! I am so excited-- I am literally counting down the hours. I guess we've decided to go ahead with our plans to visit MK on a day that they have "extra magic hours" but only because we will be going to MK for two days. If the lines are outrageous we'll just have to manage. My parents really don't want to spend the extra $40 pp to do the hopper pass when we would only be using it once or maybe twice. We are really "penny pinching" for this trip.
Are there any tips out there for keeping cool? I read somewhere that keeping bandanas in your bag was good for soaking them with ice water and wrapping around your neck. Any other suggestions? Is anybody even out there? I've noticed no one is really reading this anymore, and I'm thinking it's because I don't have much to say and also don't have any pictures! It's a good thing I'm too excited to get my feelings hurt.....
