The Harry Potter Grand Opening---what to expect?

Ok--I am probably in the minority here. I booked our vacation right after school ends and I guess I hit the jackpot by most standards arriving the day before the opening and being there that weekend. But, I am so not looking forward to the crowds. STanding in line is the main reason we have never been to Disney and always stay onsite at Universal.

Has anyone been to something like this? I was hoping the spring opening would have happened and we would be there when all the hype died out.

The only good thing is that maybe the rest of the park will seem empty as everyone attacks that part.

DG---who hasn't posted here in what seems like forever

What to expect? Hmm...that's a good question. I think it's going to be an absolute madhouse.

I'm in the same boat I booked my trip before the annoucement was made and will be there for opening weekend I'm sure that the crowds will be insane but I think you just have to take that as it is and enjoy being amongst the first and the madness that will go with.

Me too. Our arrival is on the Monday after opening weekend and we definitely didn't plan it that way. I knew HP would be open and I knew it would be busy as a result. But I wasn't planning on landing in IOA smack-dab in the middle of the GRAND-freaking-opening. Yikes.

We'll just have to expect the craziness and be thankful we are staying on-site. And maybe we'll be pleasantly surprised. At least we will have good stories to tell ("I was there when that thing opened.")

Oh, it did occur to me that perhaps there will be some celebrity visits/sightings on or around the "grand" opening. Maybe????

And you know.... my favorite park is US anyway, so that may REALLY work to my advantage this time around!

If June 18th is indeed ribbon cutting day, then don't expect to actually be able to get inside WWoHP that day.

From what I've heard, and my sources are good as there are several, everyone ever involved in HP has been invited to come. JKR is definitely going to be there, the Golden Trio, (aka Harry, Ron and Hermione) are all expected, as are most of the cast, both adults and student characters.

The ribbon cutting is meant to be a big media event. Regular park guests will most likely be stuck behind rope lines and gates. Only the VIPs, their guests, media, contest winners and other special guests will actually be allowed into the section during the press event.

If you are going to the event hoping to see the VIPs (actors, JKR) then I suggest getting there at opening and staking out a ropeline spot as close to the main gates as possible, across from the cameras. That's your best bet for autographs (the place where publicists recommend actors go to sign - don't expect JKR to sign anything, her handlers are tough).

It's possible that after all the actors have ridden the rides and left and all the media stuff has happened that they will let park guests in.

One other thought, because of the Today Show's involvement, and its contest, it is very possible that the park may open a bit earlier than usual (although probably unannounced), so if you really want to be there for all the action, plan to stake the place out earlier than you might originally plan.

There might be soft openings as early as May,June 18th is the official grand opening, either way expect mobs,I would love to go and check it out but unless they have some sort of Annual passholder days where the only ones allowed into WWOHP are passholders then I might just wait until mid August when kids start going back to school. In regards to the OP,since you've always avoided Disney due to crowds, this summer might be the time to hit it,with Fastpasses, the mobs heading to IOA and the ever growing number of people who are going to Disney at other times during the year who have realized summer is not the best time of the year to go to, the Disney parks might actually be tolerable this summer crowd wise.

If you are familiar with the term "cluster" (some people add a second word), I would say that will be a good description.

I am in no way seeking any star sightings. My kids are just coming out of the other side of Harry Potter. My son joined the frenzy with the later books which IMHO just seemed more profit extenders than really good movies. We will be seeing any future movies on DVD.

We were just looking forward to visiting the area and seeing it. My kids are also not big thrill ride seekers, so the whole package was more the sights and visuals for them.

Like I said, hopefully the rest of the park will be subdued with everyone over at that section. I just tell my kids that things like this aren't going anywhere and will be there the next time we visit.

Sort of like the ipad from apple. All those poor people who rushed to buy one and then they announce that there will be an upgraded version that has multi-tasking on it. Sometimes waiting will get you the better experience.

You want to know what to expect, you have the right idea. You want to know how to avoid it? EARLY. If the park opens at 9, get to the front gate at 8. Your onsite express will do nothing to help you. BEE LINE for the area, run, sprint, whatever, just get there first. You will have time to hit the rides, then walk around the area without too many major lines. If you wait until even ten minutes after park opening to get there, forget it. It's going to be insane.

JKR is the only "celebrity" as of now that we know will most likely be there. The trio was just a rumour, and seeing as Deathly Hallows is still filming through June, I wouldnt get too certain to see them at the grand opening.

The names circulating to appear are Bonnie Wright (Ginny Weasley) the Phelps twins (Fred & George Weasley) Tom Felton (Draco Malfoy) and of course JKR will probably be cutting the ribbon.

Also Guests WILL be able to enter the park that day, at least those who booked an HP package. I know this primarly because we have a reservation at the 3 Broomsticks at 10am on June 18th.

Most media will be in before the park even opens to get footage, and while some media will be there for the grand opening, I highly doubt Universal will turn away paying guests, esp. those who (like myself) booked the Harry Potter package and are staying onsite from entering The Wizarding World of HP.

I would think everyone would be allowed in, until the park fills to capacity.

We, too, booked way before the announced opening. We were scheduled to arrive June 20. Just last week, I called and upped our reservations (Am I crazy??!! This trip is for my DD, who wants, more than anything, to wake up in Hogwarts on her birthday. I figured, if you can't beat them, then join them!!!) So, we added in June 19 on site and there was still availability. That make me think maybe it won't be THAT hideous.

I would think that since draco and a couple of his goons have been seen checking out the area, they would be there at the opening. as for any others, Harry has been in all the comercials so I would expect him as well as JKR to do the official opening.

Unless there is an illness, injury, act of nature, etc. JKR is 100% going to be there on the 18th. I know it for a fact (although I can't say how I know, sorry, I know how annoying it is when people do that).

I also know that barring illness, injury, acts of nature, etc. The trio, Harry, Ron and Hermione, and Draco will be present (and I suspect Dumbledore and Hagrid as well), and here's why I say this:

When actors sign contracts for projects of this size, be it movie or theme park ride, there is ALWAYS a clause in that contract that says they have to do press junkets and media events for that project. The only exception is generally if there is a contract that pre-dates this project's contract that has scheduling conflicts and the party that contract was made with is unwilling to let the actor off for a couple of days.

In the case of the above mentioned actors their contracts with Universal would have been co-negotiated with Warner Bros. and Heyday Films. And since their current scheduling conflict is their project with WB and Heyday (aka Deathly Hallows), WB and Heyday would be fully prepared to let them off for a few days to fulfill their contractual obligations with Universal. I can't speak to whether Gambon and Coltrain, who also filmed for this ride, will be obligated to do the media events as well, because most of the adults in the HP franchise only film during select months, and generally have lots of other projects going on in between their HP filming. Radcliffe, Watson and Grint however are generally exclusive to HP when they are filming because they are in more scenes.

As to whether guests will be able to enter WWoHP on the 18th, I don't think anyone should expect that their breakfast reservations or something some phone operator has said should guarentee it. At least not in the morning or during the official "ceremony". We know the Today show and Ellen are likely to be filming that morning, they both had contests, etc (remember Ellen's chosen two are going back for the big ceremony with her, and Today show has the classroom of kids). When they are filming things like that, they don't generally want a lot of people wandering around behind the reporters or, heaven forbid, in front of the cameras, so there will be roped off areas. And when the actors and JKR are there, they are going to keep the unwashed masses away for security reasons.

I hope they honor breakfast ressies that were made months before this date was announced, but don't be surprised to get an email or phone call either telling you to reschedule the day, or telling you to get to the Three Broomsticks by some round about method that keeps you away from the actors/press. I'm not trying to start an arguement here, I'm just suggesting you be prepared for anything on the 18th, but don't expect to rub elbows with JKR.

My question is, why would Universal let guests book vacations to TWWoHP on June 18th, and then deny them entry the day of? From what I heard the opening ceremony will be short and sweet, no more than an hour. And while I do believe JK will be there, the trio possibly, the whole cast? highly doubtful.

Deathly Hallows is already behind scheduel due to a massive set fire (which destroyed large portions of the great hall set) so I can see the trio being there, but I highly doubt theyd want to mingle and go through the entire park (which they will probably due the eve before the opening) while all the guests are there as well.

If Universal denys paying guests, who bought the WWoHP package speficially, let alone paying guests to IoA, they will have one giant PR mess on their hands.

I think it will be crazy, we are arriving on Sunday the 20th and staying all week so hopefully that will allow us to see HP at least one day :)

I know a couple of the hotels are already starting to sell out and they are not letting you book just 1 night unless you call and can get someone to work around the system.

I told my DH that we will have to be at the park the hour early at least one day and go straight to HP so we can see it all....I doubt it will be Sunday since we need time to check in and set up so maybe MondayTuesday since those are usually a big check in/check out day for peeps and sometimes the park is slower.

:confused3

I'm just looking forward to seeing the parks again, and my DD will be over 48 inches tall and wants to ride the Mummy so that will be fun. Last year I was 6 months pregnant so wasn't able to do much, looking forward to getting on a few coasters this time. :woohoo:

Thanks for giving me some hope! We'll be there Monday/Tuesday as well (staying at Disney though).

I'm sure it will be different but we were at Epcot for the official opening of Mission Space and it was a walk on (rode it 3 times in a row with no wait), although not officially it had been open for weeks before. The anticipation for Harry Potter is huge though so I'm sure it will be very crowded but I'm sure it will open well before the actual date for it's soft openings but more than likely it will be miserable but atleast you can say you were there for the opening.

It will be what you make of it I'm just going to have a good time regardless, crowds don't bother me, I've been in the middle of August so I have a good idea of the crowd levels from those trips.

I mean it would be nice if the crowds were managable etc but its not realistically going to happen. I was in Disney when Toy Story Mainia had a soft opening during star wars weekends, and it was beyond packed the wait time was around 3 hours and the fast passes were loonggg gone!
