:) Well, some of you may remember my many questions about 'donuts' or 'doughnuts' at DLRP. I was looking for 'Berliner' or 'Krapfen' - the jam filled doughnuts seen all over central Europe.

DLRP lists 'donuts' on several menus. As I discovered on my trip to Germany this summer, the overall quality of Berliner has declined dramatically :scared1: and since my mother only makes them every other New Year's Day, I was in serious withdrawal. Over the course of a month in Paris I was able to sample (and discard) several poor facsimilies.

The bad news? the 'beignets' at DLRP were nothing great. HOWEVER the patisserie chain 'Paul' with locations throughout Paris and also at Val d'Europe makes a doughnut very similar (but not quite as good ;) ) as my mother's Berliner.

They also make a 'tarte au sucre' almost identical to her 'Zuckerkuchen'. And on Dec 6th there were no beignets at Paul as they were busy baking Puhmann for Nikolaus Day! (I missed mine as I was once again travelling that day...)

SO! lesson learned - for anyone looking for very very good and very authentic baking, visit Paul! Just a short train ride away from DLRP and worth stocking up. Paul definitely met up to my German tastebuds.

In his book, Simon also raves about the crepes at the cafe run by Paul in Val d'Europe - I didn't get a chance to try them though.

::yes:: I did bavaria!! I wondered how you got on our your quest!! :goodvibes

One of my friends recommended Paul at Val d'Europe to us too ~ she had a very enjoyable, excellent-value meal there. We haven't made it into Val d'E yet but it is on our list of "things-to-do"!!

Interesting.

Jam filled doughnuts are so common in the UK I'm bored of them.

I love the sugar glazed ring ones at DLRP.

Paul is a great bakery type shop, there is allways too much to choose from though.

We enjoyed having breakfast at Paul at Val d'Europe.

There are many Paul locations throughout Paris. Perfect for a quick bite. In addition to pastries, they have sandwiches and quiche.
