The future of tipping 18-20%

When we dine at resturants here at home we always tip 18-20%. Disney will be no different. I just wonder if and when they will make it mandatory for all parties (instead of just six or more) to tip this amount. We will be traveling with family and friends who want to split up at the resturant to avoid a 18% tip.:sad2: I suppose it needs to make no difference to us, as we will be doing the right thing. I have a feeling that if they implement this soon they may back out of the trip.

Youve got family who wants to split into multiple parties in restaurants to avoid the automatic gratuity for parties of more than 5?

I think I would have just paid it unless the service was terrible.

I'm curious to know if they believe the tip should be less than 18% in general, or if they just want to control the amount they tip based on the service.

I'm gonna leave my comments about your friends and family out of this, and NOT get the thread locked.

Anyway, no disney won't be making any sudden changes like that. The smallest decisions there are first bought up by some dork in an office who has NO CLUE how it will effect the rest of the company. After its researched to look at any cost savings, etc, it may then start to be put into process several months later. Something as large as auto grat on ALL tables would have to go through the union, voting, etc.

I believe the union agreement already provides the flexibility needed.

While I think Disney could implement across-the-board tips, I wouldn't expect them to do so in the middle of a year. The various dining discount plans always have the "subject to change without notice" language, but there are a lot of other considerations in making a change like that.

IF they do it, I'd expect them to make any changes at the beginning of a calendar year, like they did this year with DDE and reducing the party size from 8 to 6.

Here is the problem I have seen on all these topics. Disney has the right to impliment whatever policies or lack of policies they feel necessary in order to ensure that their profitability is maintained to ensure a continued growth in these types of programs. If families don't feel it is profitable to partake in these types of plans there are many alternatives available. There are many wonderful restraunts on the strip that provide a wonderful alternative. One of our favorites is Capone's. It is a dinner/show that is a must see if you have the time.

Anyway, if you don't want to tip then don't eat there. Go eat at the counter service areas. I do wish that disney would provide a counter service only dining plan. So you could eat off site on days you didn't feel like being on site.

Yeah, they are smart on that. If this "no grat included" for the DDP doesn't go well for a majority of servers, there will be hell to pay. I'm not saying some server who slacks off will be mad he is no longer getting free tips. If tons of high quality servers, who have worked MANY(10-20+) years at disney, always providing the best level of service, and now they are hit with a 10% pay cut....

They are NOT going to be happy!
