So we all know by now that the sleeper chair will be in AKV allowing the one bedrooms to "officially" sleep 5. Do you think the sleeper chair will also be in BLT? How bout the other resorts as they go through rehabs? I think they would be a great option everywhere, not only to sleep 5 but also to allow opposite sex siblings or not so close friends/relatives to have separate beds. What do you think?

I don't think existing resorts will be retrofitted with them. They are more expensive than just replacing a chair with a chair.

For future DVCs, I think they will be the norm, if they have enough floor space in the one bedroom units.

I agree with the pp on the existing resorts. If you look at the BLT floorplans the 1 bedrooms do show a sleeper chair so I'm sure it will be the norm for the new resorts.

If you think about how many people actually own one unit at any resort the cost of adding a sleeper chair would be very reasonable for member fees. In addition. If they ever add flat screens then they can get rid of those big bulky armoirs that take up half of the living room.:happytv:

According to my guide DVC would be stupid not to have all future one bedroom units to sleep 5....

I think the chair is here to stay.

I think they will put these into every resort possible. The DVC members will cover the cost and the Mouse will sell more tickets and food. It is really a win for Disney.

I am not sure they will retro fix older DVC resorts with them. Since it has to do with firecodes....

I prefer the DVC Grand Californian's approach: twin bed murphy pulled out from the entertainment center. Way to go! :thumbsup2

The sleeper chair was already in the VAK room we had last week. (1BR concierge) I love it, great idea.

A good quality pull out is more expensive than a regular bed and I suspect the chair is as or more expensive than the larger pullout. Not only do I not expect they will retrofit, I'm not totally sure they'll replace them as such when the time comes and the resort is sold out. Murphy beds are a better and cheaper option though one that tends to not be well received by a lot of people.

I agree with you. Disney cannot just increase the occupancy of the older resorts without regard to the fire codes. Fire codes are also about about egress - the capacity & location of the exits, hallways, stairways, etc. It may not be possible or wise to add additional sleeping capacity to the older resorts.

I do a lot of IBC and national fire code compliance design and work. In the condo style resorts it is not really an issue due to the limited size of the buildings (even 2 36” doors and 48” stairs gives you 320 per floor without sprinklers. Most designers indicate anticipated occupancy but still rate for maximum so they probably would not have to even re-file.

The hotel style can be more limited. I will be down in August and have 2 WL and 2 BC days so while the kids are sleeping I will check and run the calculations.

Hope this give a little technical perspective.

Also with the quantity of anything DVC buys you can bet that they get a price very close to production cost (about 1/3 of what you see retail).

If DVC were smart.....since they just added 15 yrs to OKW....they should add the sleep chair to OKW. That darn living room is sooooo big it screams for another sleeping couch/chair.
Just some food for thought;)

I would personally love to see them retrofit, but we're a family of 5! And at this point we're a family of 5 with very few points, which would make it wonderful to have more 1br's that accomodate us. Just as the resorts were all upgraded to DVD players from VCR's I assume they'll eventually update all the tv's to flat screens (many of the regular resorts have been upgraded already)...which would make more room available. And I would bet they have some sort of deal with the company making sleeper chairs...as Disney has put them in the AS Family Suites and now at AKV, so that the cost may not be as exorbitant as one might think. Then again I have no arguement with a Murphy bed either....it would probably be more comfortable than a fold out (not that I'm going to be sleeping on it!)

I'll make no guesses as to whether or not they will. As they will allow a family of 5 to book a 1br (not starting an occupancy debate....just repeating what I've heard on that subject...please go to the occupancy thread if you want to debate it) I would assume that it would not be a problem as far as fire codes are concerned.

And I agree...OKW would be the most obvious choice for the first retrofit! So much room!

I think they would be wise consider retrofitting all resorts with the sleeper chair but I don't think it's something they would do unless it's in conjunction with a remodel/refurbish of each resort. To do it at any other time wouldn't be cost-effective. If they can make the change and still be in compliance with code, I think it would be a great idea.

Or the Murphy bed, like at GCV. It wasn't in the studio, only the one bedroom, and used instead of the sleep chair because of the floorplan.
During our tour, a woman in our group squealed with delight when she saw it, as she is sure her little boy will demand the Murphy bed as his own. "Very Pirate like" she said.
I am not sure, but I think the GCV studio had the sleep chair, as I recall them saying the studio sleeps 5.

Can you please post the link to the BLT floorplans? I wasn't aware there is an official announcement! Exciting.....

couldn't agree more. Sleeper chairs will be in all resorts once they need to replace the old furntiture. Similar to replacing all the TV's with LCD's.

Just a matter of time. IMHO

I don't know if the sleeper chairs will fit in the BCV/VWL/BWV/SSR floor plans. There may be space limitations for a retrofit.

I think we will see them in all new DVC's and perhaps retrofit in OKW, VB and HH where there is room if the design allows.

I don't think fire codes are an issue, after all, deluxe rooms and some POR rooms sleep 5 so there is no way a 1 bdrm couldn't sleep 5. I hope to see it everywhere.
