The Future Of Mission: Space

What will happen to Mission: Space in the future?

  • It will stay the same.

  • It will be toned down more.

  • It will be changed drastically. (I.E., become a big movie-theater-like attraction.)

  • It will be destroyed.

  • I don't know.

What do you forsee for this attraction? Do you think it will be changed? Destroyed? Toned down?

I just want to see it when I go to Disney in September-October.

My gut tells me they'll replace it. It doesn't seem to have that "across the board" appeal that Disney rides have. Besides, when we got fast passes for Test Track, the machine spit out freebie fast passes for M:S. That says something to me.

This is just my (very) humble opinion: the first death (the little boy) was due to his undiagnosed enlarged heart. As sad and as horrible as the situation was (going to Disney and having a tragedy occur), no one can hold Disney responsible for his death: the ride was operating properly. The second death occurred, from what I read, the next day. The lady was "ill" when she got off the ride, but didn't die ON the ride. Since we don't have all the details, obviously we have to wait and see what they say. However, Disney has spent a whole boat-load of money on this ride and I highly doubt they would just bulldoze the whole thing. I wouldn't be surprised if they altered it in some way, so I voted for some change, not radical.

Again, just my opinion.

There has been a direct cause death at Disneyland on Big Thunder Mountain, and that ride continues to operate.

It will soon close. For no other reason, the bad press has already drastically affected its popularity and now it will only be worse.

Ohh,I really want it to stay this way..It's so cool!I love that music,I love that area after you leave the atraction..It's fantastic!

Perhaps they should make the "training" aspect of the ride more significant, including signing a release (by a parent if underaged).

My family loves MS so I hope it stays the same. We will just have to see if the new death can be directly linked to MS. Thousands have ridden it without injury so I am not ready to see it close until it can be directly linked to death. There are many more intense rides in other theme parks. In my opinion, something already has to be wrong with someone before a death would occur from any thrill ride.

I foresee the ride being toned down/changed a little bit......... I did not ride it, but DH did, and he liked it, but said it was "intense" and knew I wouldn't enjoy it.

I do feel however that in both of these cases, as tragic as they are, I believe just like the little boy, the woman "probably" had a condition where she really shouldn't have ridden it. I guess we'll see, but that is my gut feeling.

I'm not saying it's her fault, nor am I saying it's Disney's fault -- I just wanted to make it clear that I'm NOT blaming anyone here!! It is horrible and my feelings go out to all concerned.

i'd be amazed if this didn't turn out the same as the first...unfortunate for the family but not anyone's fault.

if they tone it down anymore they may as well just put in a walking trail and you can take an easy stroll up to mars ;) if they get rid of it due to stupid sensationalism that's our loss imo( i like the ride but wouldn't call it intense in the least after the first few seconds

I personally like the ride, but you can tell from the lines (or lack thereof) that the attraction is not one of the more popular ones at WDW. From a motion point of view, it is intense, and many people experience dizzyness and nausea. However, I don't see how you could possibly tone down the ride--if you stop the centrifuge effect, there is nothing left.

From a PR point of view, I think they are in a position of having to do something, even though the ride is probably completely safe.

yeah then the next article can mention barf bags and a release form as proof as how treacherous it is ;)

( kind of like those "atomic" wings you need to sign release forms for:teeth: )

I don't think we'll see any changes. I rode M:S at least 4-5 times when it first opened in '03. Then, rode it again several months later. I think they toned it down in between my two visits. It just didn't seem as intense in Dec as compared to August.
There is a ton of signage before you are allowed to enter. I have been on a teacup ride, with my younger brother, and I have to say..he had that puppy spinning so fast I couldn't move my arms or hands. I thought I was going to be sick when we got off. M:S really isn't all that different. The vast majority of people can safely ride it. Are you going to shut down airlines because someone throws a blood clot? Or if someone actually uses the 'bag' that the plane provides? I'm really sorry these people have died. It is heartbreaking to think that even in 'the happiest place in the world' these things can still happen. But, they do.
I have found that almost every time we have ridden M:S, there has been a 20 minute wait, at least. Now, my dd and I don't ride it nearly as much as we did when it first opened. It's kind of a 'been there, done that' kind of thing. My dh can't ride it since he gets a terrible headache. Dd and I have no problems with it physically....well, unless you count the time I ate at the Electric Umbrella, and then rode it...that was a huge mistake!!!

On a similar note, I live near the Mall of America and I know of 2 kids who have died there. One on the flume type ride, he jumped out a the top. I believe he was 7, and a teenager died falling off an escalator from the 3rd floor. They still run the escalators and still run the flume ride. I have a feeling MS will go on, and of course the deaths are tragic, but it seems to me they are a "no fault" kind of deal. :confused3

I've heard other people say eating at the Electric Umbrella is a huge mistake, too. :teeth: All I know for sure is that you should never order the French Toast under the assumption that you're going to get bread dipped in egg and fried...

This sounds really bad, but I don't know and I really don't care. I think Mission Space is a one time experience and not worth the line to ride it again. It was a unique expericence but nothing special. The force that's put on you is like RnR except you don't get the thrill of going through loops or speed. I actually would like if they put something like Philharmagic in there, but about space. It could be just as cool but then you could keep the building and everything.

I dont think the ride will be going anywhere anytime soon. People have died in all sorts of Disney attractions that are still operational today. They may tone it down some, which I hope they dont. I never got to ride Mission:Space until this January, and from the way it was described to me from those who had ridden it when it first opened, it seemed really tame, but I enjoyed the sensation all the same. I'll be coming back in Sept, and M:S is on the top of my list for things I want to see again. Hope it's there.

I think it will be replaced. I wish they would have just left it alone as Horizons...my FAVORITE ride. Maybe they can just put an enhanced version back.

edit to add....all the illness/throwing up, a couple deaths from this ride...these are people who think they are ok to ride, not the thousands and thousands who already can't go on it. At some point, someone w/no underlying condition will have an issue, get sick/death from this ride and then it will be a different story. I have no fact to base this statement on, just my guess.
