The financially irresponsible WDW trip! [June 25th: p.45, posts 668 & 669]

I have just read your entire report - I am thoroughly enjoying it! Your DD is adorable and what wonderful boys you have - they seem so attentive to DD! Can't wait to read more!

Ditto!! You have a wonderful report. Look forward to the next installment:happytv:

its funny now, but my lil'miss cutie pie..used to "pick fights"..

:hyper2: & :maleficen......:headache: what just hit me?????
so now, i do a hasty retreat....

I just found this and read it all the way through (uh, I work nights in a 24 hour call center so if no one's calling I've got nothing but free time and internet access). I have to say, your TR is one of, if not the, best I've ever read. I'm having so much fun here. I think it was right about the time you used the word "compartmentalising" that I realized I had met a kindred spirit (though I do love the word, "knackered" as well). All the same fonts, color coding - you are not alone!

Loving it so far and looking forward to the rest!

disneyaddicted - Thanks for reading! Glad to have you here! :)

Villainess - You're very kind - thank you!! :thumbsup2

Nanb - Yay!! Thanks. Welcome! :)

Lil' Grumpy - Glad you're still here! DH can tell ya, I'm pretty good at doing the 'not so sweet' thing. :lmao:

resol37 - Yay! Thanks for the great comments. I really appreciate them!

I'm working on the next chapter. It should be up soon!

Hi Deb,

Love the trip report, looking forward to the next installment!

Deb,
Thank you for being productive, but not TOO productive during the past week. Catching up was easy and a delight. :yay: I visited my in-laws this past week while they were staying at the Boardwalk, and let me tell you how envious I am of your time there. What a nice place to stay, even if you can't find the boat dock! All the more time to walk around and be in awe, I suppose.

As usual, a great installment. Post about MGM/Disney Studios soon. I can't wait to hear how the boys did on the "big rides". Besides, I'm hip high in laundry and need something to do between loads.

:goodvibes

Hi Debs
just found your report and have spend the whole evening catching up :surfweb:

Thank you so much for sharing :thumbsup2 Love all the photos

:woohoo: We were in WDW the same time as you :woohoo:
we could have even walked past each other

looking forward to reading more
you sound a bit like me

Just came across this report and I love it!

Deb, you are so funny. I love the way you tell it all like it is. We planner moms (although I have to admit that you outdo me in that department! I have made those morning/afternoon/evening activity charts for our trips, but I did not color code them.) put a lot of pressure on ourselves and sometimes our poor families to enjoy the fruit of our labors.

I also like to see the way you enjoy America. We've been to Ireland once as a family and England twice. (My husband spent 3 years of his childhood living in Sandycove, Ireland while his father was a student at Trinity College in Dublin. We returned 45 years later to find his house, his school, his church all just the same as they were! There had been new building but the places he remembered were still there. That was a great trip.) Driving on the other side of the road is always stressful. One of our favorite things to do is grocery shop. Just looking at all the different products. Our kids have their favorite: Mr. Kipling's Cherry Bakewells. We want to go back but the exchange rate is so bad for us right now. I'm sure that's one reason you love to shop here-- everything is so bleeding cheap for you at the moment!

Finally, to refer to your last installment, I liked the story of the young CM being dispatched to escort you to the boat. To me that's the epitome of the Disney way-- helping guests when the CM sees a need even when the guests don't ask. I guess it was embarrassing but didn't you appreciate being well looked-after?

Keep on writing!

More please! I've been sitting here for two hours and have read your entire report in one sitting. Lots of laughs, lots of understanding! Can't wait to hear more...........P

Love your trip report! :cool1: You write so well that I can just imagine myself there and can "smell" that cofee on the boardwalk!:lovestruc

We just got back and I want to go back...NOW! :lmao: :lmao: :lmao:

Hi Deb! I'm jonesing for an update:banana: I'm trying to be patient but I miss your great stories. Please come back soon. Pretty please?:flower3:

disneyaddicted - So glad you're reading along! Glad to have you here! :)

Villainess - Thanks for the very kinds words and for reading!

wardfamily1 - Thanks so much!! :)

sharkB8HooHaHa - Hey!! I'm so glad you liked The Boardwalk. I hope your recent trip was fabulous! Can't wait to read all about it. *Hint hint* ;)

Ricky's Girl - Thanks so much for the bumps!! You are truly a loyal follower! :teeth:

jns - Yay! How nice to have a 'local' reading! ;) I recognise your nick from the UK board and you were kind enough to answer me in my post asking about Continental Airlines some months back. Hope your trip was great too! I see from your sig that you're going back in a few months! And you bought into DVC!! Wow! I am so jealous! But also pleased for you. :) I am dying to become a member - mind if I pick your brains at some point about joining DVC from abroad? Do you ever feel a bit isolated loving Disney (and knowing it so well) when you're so far from it and most people from here just book a package and go there once? Does this make sense? It's just that I try to avoid talking about it these days cause friends and family think I'm a bit nuts wanting to go back there repeatedly!! Thanks for reading!!

solgent - Cherry Bakewells are the business! :thumbsup2 That trip to here sounds great! How nice to go back to your DH's old spots. That must have been an emotional trip for him. I hear ya about the exchange rate and, yes, it certainly helps us when it comes to shopping in the U.S.!!!
About the CM, oh I absolutely love that about Disney - I find the attitude of the CMs just wonderful! Thanks for reading!!! :)

pjlla - Thanks so much for reading!!! :)

wdw_girl_18 - Yay! Thanks! :thumbsup2

TXMouseChaser - I wanna go back too!!! Thanks for the very kind words! :)

So, after yet another lengthy delay I'm gonna post the next two bits now. Thanks for hanging in there everyone!!

PART 16: MGM!

Monday 30th October 2006

Not surprisingly, we didn't make rope drop. But that was okay. Much as I love movies, I wasn't overly excited about going to MGM because on our first trip we seemed to miss every show going on there and I found it a tough park to tour. But it has the boys' favourite attractions - Rock 'n Roller Coaster and Tower of Terror - so, for them, this was a very exciting day. We had a simple list of what we'd like to do and as well as the two headliners above, I definitely wanted to get in a couple of shows this year! Having said that, I decided not to stress too much about it because we were coming back the following Sunday for half a day so we would just get done what we'd get done today.

First we went to Rock 'n Roller Coaster and Alice was "oohing" and "aahing" at the "upside-down car". She thought it was hilarous and said "mommy, they left their car all upside down"!

DSCF0747.jpg

Look how quiet it was.........

DSCF0748.jpg

It was a mere 5 minute wait so DH got in line with the boys and we also got a babyswap pass. I got fastpasses for later too as I knew the boys could never have enough turns on this particular ride! Alice and I went to relax outside and we used a couple of snack credits in a nearby stand.

DSCF0749.jpg

By now, I was already in love with the Dining Plan. I know it's not exactly cheap but there's something thoroughly satisfying about having it paid for in advance and then just choosing what you want without physically parting with cash at that moment! I can't even imagine the sheer levels of bliss I would experience if I were lucky enough to be there during free dining.

Despite the short line, RnR takes quite a while, what with the pre-show and all that. So while Alice and I waited, we got chatting to two very nice women who were also sitting waiting for family members. One of the women was waiting for her 13 year old daughter and she told me they'd been going to WDW every year since her DD was a baby. Wow! I was impressed. I asked her if it was losing any appeal yet for her DD and she said "no way". She begs to go back every year. For some reason, I was really relieved to hear that because, even though I know we could never afford to go there every year (much as I'd love to) I do want to go at least every 3 years and I think I'd be physically sick if my boys ever tired of the place. :sad1: The other woman asked me where we were staying and when I said The Boardwalk she let out a little scream. :lmao: She said they had stayed there on their honeymoon and she loves the place. It was so nice to talk to two women who were big Disney fans and knew a lot about it.

Finally the boys returned and it was my turn. I remembered RnR as not being *too* bad the year before so I wasn't really scared. Not much anyway. I had missed the pre-show the year before so it was good to see it this time. The only problem I have with the pre-show is that actress who's playing the role of Aerosmith's manager is probably too good at acting because every time I see her I picture her in Cape Fear, as De Niro's girlfriend, going through hell at his hands. *Shudder*

But where was I? Oh yeah - being scared on the ride. Well, it was faster than I remembered. I recalled it being very, very, very fast but actually it was very, very, very, very fast. It doesn't last long though and finally we stopped. Sweet blessed relief.

We browsed around in the shop there afterwards and Wayne was thrilled to be able to replace his favourite pen. It's a bendy RnR pen - he bought one on our first trip and was surprisingly very upset when it broke (he just really loved it) so I bought him two so we have one in reserve if such a crisis should ever hit again! Perish the thought.

By now, it was actually time to get another set of FPs, yay! So I went over the get some for ToT to use later.

DSCF0746.jpg

I checked the time and we had missed the first Lights, Motor Action show by just a few minutes (as seems to be the MGM way!) so we decided to go to Voyage of the Little Mermaid. A first for us! Now at this point in time time, 4 months ago, our little Alice was still unfamiliar with Ariel and none of us had ever seen The Little Mermaid. I know, I know. Bad Disney family. Bad bad bad. But this past Christmas Santa gave Alice the box set of The Little Mermaid and she now adores Ariel and Melody!

After a deceptively long wait in the pre-show area (it might say '5 minutes' outside but it's more like 20) finally we're seated and the show begins. Wow! We all agreed (even the boys!!!) that this was an excellent show and I am so glad we made the effort to catch it!

DSCF0752.jpg

When we exited the timing was good for Playhouse Disney.

DSCF0765.jpg

This is one we made a point of seeing last year and we wouldn't miss this time either as Alice is a big fan of Bear and I have a bit of a crush on him myself! The boys came with us too which, in retrospect, was a bit cruel on my part - hee hee! But we hadn't time to make plans to split up and anyway both DH and I were really keen on seeing Alice's reactions so the boys were captive!

She was too shy to get up and dance but really enjoyed herself nonetheless.

She was the last to leave!
DSCF0763.jpg

After this we went to The Great Movie Ride. I preferred it the year before for some reason. Probably cause it was one of only 2 or 3 attractions we actually *did* in MGM. ;) This year, we thought it was okay, but not brilliant. Although we did really enjoy the movie clips at the end.

After this we went to One Man's Dream. We all enjoyed looking at the exhibits and Garth, in particular, relished every detail. However, we had just missed a showing of the movie itself and, much as I loved it last year, I felt that Alice was getting a bit too impatient and I didn't want her acting up in the theatre. I wish now I'd seen it again though as I was very moved by it on our first trip. But the thing is, I didn't want a repeat of the '05 incident! Which was basically that, for some unknown reason, Alice roared laughing at the saddest parts in that movie. I swear any time there was a poignant scene, Alice (at the time a mere 15 months) would literally get into hysterics laughing. I don't know why. You can imagine the looks we got - but, to be fair, anyone who did look around, as soon as they saw that she was just a baby, they smiled and forgave her. Still, I wasn't risking it again!

So I took Alice outside for a browse around the shops while the boys went to One Man's Dream. I had bought little presents for the couple who rented us the DVC points but I wanted to get something for their kids too so I picked up the 'Magic Kingdom' dvd in one of the larger MGM stores and, in true Disney-dork fashion, I gleefully bought myself one of those plastic park-pass holders to attach to my person with the elasticated stringy thing hanging off it. Fabulous! I swear I played with that thing for about a week afterwards, marvelling at the 'engineering' behind it and almost squealing every time I needed to get out the park passes without having to remove the holder. Yes, I'm Deb and I'm simple.

I met up with the boys and DH again at the Magic of Disney Animation tour. I can't remember why DH waited outside with Alice, perhaps she was napping but anyway the boys and I went in and I really liked it. The movie with the guy from 'Mulan' was very very funny. A huge regret of mine though is that we didn't stay around to do the hands on animation bit afterwards. Wayne and Garth are both talented sketchers and Garth especially loves it - not a day goes by when he's not sketching something and this opportunity was really tailor-made for him. Yet somehow, at the time (maybe tiredness was descending) I didn't think much of the fact that we left it go. It was only afterwards I was kicking myself for not planning it better. But there you go, yet another thing to add to the 'next time' list!

Oh, on our way out, Garth spotted an animation kit for 20 dollars and asked if he could buy it. They had already bought a few things so far on the holiday so I told him to think about it and maybe we'd get it in a few days. But secretly I knew I was going to buy it for him as a birthday gift in just a few days.

We all met up again outside and it was now time for lunch. I had booked Hollywood & Vine for Alice and I while the boys had reservations at Sci-Fi. This was the only time we split up for a sit down meal but it worked out well. I knew from reading the reviews that they'd get a real kick out of Sci Fi and, of course, our Alice, being a huge JoJo fan (at the time) would, I thought, adore H&V. We parted and arranged to meet later at the Muppets theatre.

H&V was a big disappointment. That and Planet Hollywood were the only two disappointing meals of the trip. Basically, I found the service haphazard and lacklustre. I should have known this because I was disappointed with it on our first trip too. I know, I know, why would I return? But the JoJo & Friends meal was new and I really thought that would alter my view of the place but no, same bad service. I will say, the food was good, no complaints there. They had plenty of nice vegetarian pastas and lovely salads. However, what I noticed is that because it was just me and a toddler, we were, by and large, overlooked. First off, after being seated, we waited 15 minutes for our server to come to take our drinks order. I didn't know whether to just get up and get the food or continue waiting until she showed up. But 15 minutes was enough for a toddler to wait so I took her to the buffet line and quickly got us some food. I kept looking back to see if the server was approaching but no.

When we got back, I waited another few minutes and still no sign of her so I got the attention of the woman who had shown us to our seats and asked if we could order some drinks. Soon after, our server showed up and said "there you are, I've been over and back but you were missing each time". Huh? We were gone for about 2 minutes, watching the table all the time. Anyway we ordered our drinks and waited for our turn to meet the characters.

And waited... And waited... JoJo, Goliath and Stanley passed our table repeatedly. In fact, twice JoJo had to nudge and manoeuvre herself around us to get to other families that came in long after us. You can imagine a 2 year old's disappointment at constantly seeing JoJo come so near only to go again. Every few minutes the characters would converge in the middle of the restaurant for singing and dancing and, whilst I thought it was cute at first, it started to irritate me after a while because I knew that this would delay our meeting them even further. JoJo and Goliath even visited the family across from us twice and seemed to spend a long time sitting with them. I felt like we were invisible. An hour had now gone by and we still hadn't met one single character. Finally, as I was just about to pack up and leave, JoJo approached, followed immediately by Goliath, followed immediately by Stanley. After all that time, they came one after the other. Alice was pleased but a little overwhelmed.

DSCF0766.jpg

I think she had given up on meeting them and then it was all too much. She kinda liked it but compared to, for example, meeting Pooh & Friends at Crystal Palace or Mickey at Chef Mickey's it was a total loss.

I don't know if it's related or not but since that day she had zero interest in JoJo! Honestly, I didn't turn her against her, lol! She really just lost interest.

So off we went to meet the boys and I got lost. You know that area between Star Tours and the Muppets? I can't get my head around it. I like it. It intrigues me. The theming is wonderful. But, for some reason, no matter how often I walked it, I lost my bearings each and every time. As a result, we were about 20 minutes late meeting up with them. They had had a brilliant time in Sci-Fi and really loved the place. They were allowed to use 2 TS credits for their meals because DH saw the portions and said they were huge. The tight wad in me was very pleased to hear this.

We were just in time for the next showing of The Muppets and that was a huge hit with all of us. I was surprised at how much of the humour Alice got - we're all big Muppets fans but even Alice was laughing out loud and loving it!!

DSCF0780.jpg

When we exited we went into the store to pick out some Muppet toys. This had been planned for a while! Last year I bought my mother the two old geezers from the balcony and she loved them. This year, Wayne had asked if he could buy a Kermit. He was a bit reluctant, saying that perhaps he was too old but I said no way, there's no age limit on Muppet love. So he got himself a Kermit and I bought Beaker and added to my mother's 'collection' with the Swedish chef. Garth bought a fabulous Kermit t-shirt which was down from 20 dollars to 8!! For the first time, we arranged to have them shipped to our resort. It took quite a bit of time to fill in the forms and I felt bad for the woman behind me in the queue. I gave her the 'yikes, sorry' look and she just smiled back (it's something in the air at Disney!). It really was such a pleasure not having to carry bags around and this was yet another onsite perk that at first I couldn't see the appeal of, but once I did it myself, I thought it was brilliant!

[More to follow as this is getting very long!!!]

PART 17: MGM continued....

After Muppets we went and got a spot for the parade near Star Tours. This was our first ever Disney parade and we loved it! We got there early so when another family came along next to us, the boys moved a bit to make room for their kids. The kids were thrilled but the mother just kinda whined and moaned the whole time. But I know that the Disney stress gets to us all (as I have demonstrated myself all too often :lmao:) so I would be the last to judge a bad-humoured mom! She was loud though and kept complaining about the heat, the crowds, the noise, the everything. I wasn't sure if she was talking to me or the world in general but in an attempt to lessen the negative vibes I said something like "you're clearly having the best day ever". She kinda froze for a second but then she roared laughing and eased up on the complaining. Hee hee.

The boys got a great thrill out of being that close to the characters and, in particular, loved R2D2, the Cars characters and the Toy Story gang...

DSCF0809.jpg

I had picked up fastpasses for Star Tours earlier during one of my many pointless circuits around the Star Tours/Muppets Triangle. So the boys and I decided to do this next and the plan was to leave MGM for a little break afterwards.

It was good. I felt a bit queezy. No, not scared, I'm not *that* weak, just queezy from the jerking around. When we exited a very nice CM asked the boys if they'd like to go straight back on again. Even though it's not a favourite I guess the idea of going straight back on appealed to them so they went for it. The CM directed me to a seat right outside the exit door of the attraction and I thought, with not having to queue or even walk through the entrance, it would take 5 to 10 minutes max for them to be done but hmmmmm, 20 minutes later and I'm still sitting down in the corridor waiting. Turns out it had broken down! But, while I was sitting there a Storm Trooper arrived and I had a lot of fun watching him and the CM who was trying to rile him up a bit! It was so funny at one stage when a group of people exited from the ride and the Storm Trooper jumped out at them from behind a wall - one woman actually screamed. Hilarious!! :lmao:

So all in all we were gone about 45 to 50 minutes! How did that happen?? When we came out, DH and Alice were very bored and I can't say I blame them! We were now aware of time moving on - it was around 4.15 so we had to decide would we stick to our plan to take or break or would we hold out? Hmmm. Well we wouldn't get back to our room until 4.45ish and we'd need to be back again at 6ish to queue for Fantasmic. Also we still hadn't done ToT or Beauty and the Beast so, without much debating, we decided to stick it out.

We used our snack credits (*love* using those) to buy some coffees and drinks and then DH decided to take the boys to use those FPs from earlier for another go on RnR. I took Alice for a stroll and we watched some of the wonderful street performers. I was so glad to see one of the guys performing who we had briefly met last year. It's the guy on the left here in this pic which I love from our 1st trip......

MGMDanMickeyEars.jpg

He is so funny and if you get a chance to catch his (or indeed any of the street performers) acts don't miss it!

We met up with the boys and DH and headed for Beauty and the Beast. Whilst in there I took the chance to call my mother on my SIL's now fully topped up mobile phone. She had posted the letter to the secondary school for me. Good woman! I was glad that was over and done with.

Here's DH and Alice before the show. I love this photo....

DSCF0869.jpg

We all enjoyed the show a lot. This kind of thing is still all relatively new for me - I was never a girlie princessy kinda person and really, it's only since the arrival of our little girl (having spent years being a mom to boys and having no sisters) that I've even given Disney Princesses a second glance. But I thoroughly enjoyed it and Alice adored it too. Even the boys were impressed. Not so much by the frilly costumes but they appreciated the talent of all the cast.

It took quite a while to exit after the show. Fantasmic was scheduled for 7pm and it was now around 5.40. We still had to somehow get in ToT (I didn't have the heart to tell the boys we didn't have time for one of their favourites). In retrospect, I messed up on the timing and we should have gone straight to Fantasmic. This appears to be a problem I have with MGM - I constantly underestimate the time it take to do attractions. We still needed to have something to eat too though. So we decided that I would go and get something quick to eat, keep some for them and all meet up at the back of the Fantasmic line. It was only when the boys and DH were gone that I caught a glimpse of that line. Oh my God!! It was going halfway down the street. But Alice was hungry so I had to get something. I took her over to the nearby open-air CS place and queued for what seemed like forever. I packaged the stuff up as best as I could and went to get in the back of the Fantasmic line but by then a CM was there saying "standing only". Oh no! Already? You'd think I'd have done enough obsessing and planning to know that this would happen.

DH and the boys came along just then and I told them it was standing only and we were very confused about whether to go in or not. We were exhausted, had overdone it today and couldn't bear the thought of standing up with a now tired toddler so we decided to let it go. It was disappointing as we knew this had been our last chance to see it, but in a way we were relieved to just STOP. We did do Fantasmic on our first trip so it's not like we never saw it.

So, semi-disappointed but semi-relieved, we headed back over to the CS seating area and the boys ordered some extra food and we sat and ate our food without hurrying. We all adored the veggie burgers.

After we finished eating, I could have slept right there on the bench. It was around 7 now so we decided to head back to the BWV. We enjoyed the boat trip back. Now, we still had the hire car because when I booked it there was (what seemed at the time) a great offer on so we kept it for an extra day in the hope of finding the time to get offsite for some more shopping on Monday evening. Bear in mind, we were meant to have done Fantasmic the previous Friday so going shopping on this Monday evening shouldn't have been a problem! But we were too tired and had to down tools! We did go for a quick walk around the Boardwalk but headed back to our room at 9ish. Too tired to do anything much, we got an early night and again, I can't even remember getting into bed, I think I was already asleep before my head landed on the pillow.

Up next: Magic Kingdom in the morning, our lovely lunch at Tony's, a very nice break at The Boardwalk and then back to MK for MNSSHP!

YEAH! You are back! And with TWO full installments!

"After Muppets we went and got a spot for the parade near Star Tours. This was our first ever Disney parade and we loved it! We got there early so when another family came along next to us, the boys moved a bit to make room for their kids. The kids were thrilled but the mother just kinda whined and moaned the whole time. She kinda froze for a second but then she roared laughing and eased up on the complaining. Hee hee."

I have GOT to tell you this absolutely killed me. I am so happy that you spoke up. I had that very same woman behind me on Splash Mountain one day. She crabbed and complained through the whole ride (something I didn't think possible.) Up the hill it was all about fast passes, down the first dip it was the heat, into the mountain it was too dark in there, double dip into the laughing place it was that the parks were too crowded, then, of course, the laughing place is too loud. After screaming her way under the briar patch, she was back at it again. I just don't get people like that. You were brave and spoke up....I simply ducked and hoped all the water destined for me wound up in her face.

So glad you are back, Deb. We've missed you.

still loving it, you are great !!! can't wait for more !!!!
And your Alice is such a cutie !!! (she has Daddy right where she wants him, too, huh?) Your boys sound like such little gentlemen and well behaved young men.

Hooray! You're back (and in top form I must say!).:thumbsup2 Loved your updates and the photos are wonderful. Little Alice is absolutely adorable. What a beautiful child!

I'm so glad you're going back for the animators kit for your son. I'm sure he will be so thrilled. You are such an amazing mom - would you adopt me?:lmao:

Your spot for the parade was the best! I've never seen such good photos. Mine all contain the back of someone's head - we never seem to get a spot early enough for it.

Thanks for making my day with your two new posts. I'll sit back now and try to wait (very patiently) for more. popcorn::
