The End Of "Dis Vegas"

Also just noticed that the article says the Tomorrowland Arcade is closing for GOOD February 8.

WOW!How sad!

The prize redemptions really MAKE the Arcades!

What a bummer!!!!

When I click that link it tells me its premium content and to sign up going through the following link seems to bypass it.

But anyway still not following how a bad charity led to a ban on Internet Cafes which means redemption machines are gambling. Doesn't gambling involve a possible higher payout?

Trust me I have spend probably $1,000 over my sons' life time at these kinds of places and we have around $50* worth of stuff. I guess claw machines are a form of gambling.

Also this law was passed 18 months ago and it seems most of the stories i'm finding are that old and about how its so badly written it banned all internet connected devices. Like the one I'm using now. good thing I'm in PA. :confused3

*ETA: In talking to my son he thinks its more like $70.

"Disney acknowledged it is shutting down the redemption counters and claw machines but wouldn't say why."

Keep that in mind....

"Disney is not laying off any of its own workers. A union representative said 22 employees who staff the counters are being put in other positions in mid-February."

Which means 22 new employees don't need to be hired.

Disney has, thru other venues, expressed their desire to substantially reduce labor costs over the coming years. The arcades may have been a very easy target that the current legislative environment made a convenient (yet not offered as a reason) scapegoat.

I wonder if this may also be because arcades are just not popular anymore since most people have better units at home.

I know this is lame but filling it with retail makes them more money.

DQ is a special case since it has retro games and huge multi player games you just can't have at home.

That is an interesting read. I never really thought of those games as gambling, but I can sure understand the interpretation...spending money in hopes of winning more money (or prizes). If that interpretation is correct, I could certainly see how Disney would want to avoid that press.

As a parent, it should make the navigation through those arcades a little easier. We were always able to say no to our kids when it got excessive (i.e. they understood and accepted), but at least now, the desire for them to play more should be reduced :-)

I guess the revenue is not worth the aggravation of litigation. This is going to kill D&B and Chuck E. Cheese.

I remember nothing at tomorrowland that you can get at home. Unless you have the bucks for older pinball games.

With a ten year old boy and a husband who thinks he's 10, this is super depressing.

I heard they were going to keep just one claw machine working...

It's not gambling because it's clear there's no way to win.

Sorry, larry, I don't know who that is! My family never spent any money in the arcade games at Disney so we won't miss them, never realized they were so popular.

What about the games at AK I wonder

I wonder that also.

Maybe I'm missing something, but I don't see how the Arcades are considered "games of luck" while Fossil Fun Games and the Boardwalk games are considered "games of skill".

That would be Bob Iger current chairman and chief executive officer of The Walt Disney Company.

Give 'em time. They'll most likely be converted to self-serve sunglass kiosks. Because maximum sales per square foot is the name of the new game.
