The drive home from WDW to NJ

I see a lot of info here about driving to WDW, but I'm wondering about the return trip.
We'll be taking our trip next June, checking out on a Sunday. Any advice on what time we should start the depressing trek back home to Jersey and where to stop off and stay for the night? Would it be better to leave the hotel early, skip the parks and do the bulk of the driving on the first leg, or hang in the parks that last day and leave later?
Thanks for your thoughts!

When we did our trek back from WDW to NY, we left WDW around noon or one.....and made it to Florence, SC around 7ish. We stayed overnight and started heading back around 8 in the morning. Expect heavy traffic in Virginia and DC.

Hey there! We take the trek from NJ to WDW twice a year-- we start that depressing trek first thing in the morning, typically around 8-9 AM :upsidedow It's no fun, but all good things must come to an end! The drive home is like pulling teeth, so we will actually drive straight through all the way back to NJ if we're that desperate to get home sometimes. In the past, we've stopped at Rocky Mount, NC-- the Holiday Inn at Rocky Mount is very nice and not too expensive, so that's where we stay when we absolutely have to stop to go to sleep.

I recommend stopping in Rocky Mount as well. There are a couple hotels right off 95, and are very affordable. We try to leave as early as possible the next morning to avoid the traffic in Virginia, and drive through the upper DelMarVa to avoid DC and Baltimore.
