I am looking for advice from seasoned disney veterans who have suffered the raised eyebrows from family members who think that you are selfish for spending a major holiday away from family to be at Disney. We will be spending our first Christmas at Disney this year and I dread telling my relatives. They will probably be most upset because I won't be chained to the stove cooking a gourmet feast for twenty-five people...which coincidentally is the exact reason that we will be spending our Christmas at Disney.;)

Any advice? How do you deal with the guilt and raised eyebrows?

No guilt...just go.

It's someone else's turn to be chained to the stove.

Go....be free....have fun!!!

I don't feel guilty. If I were you I would not let on that I had noticed any raised eyebrows. It will make them crazy ;)

Go and enjoy your Christmas off kitchen duty. You will love it.

Tell them it's your husband's Christmas gift to the family....then the heat's on him with HIS family.

Tell the OTHER them that it's your husband's gift to the kids for Christmas....then the heat's on him with YOUR famly!

Or tell them nothing and let them figure it out when they roll up on Christmas afternoon expecting dinner!

Well....

Though they no doubt enjoy your culinary creations, I'm sure that most raised eyebrows and protestations will result more from missing you and your family rather than your food.

I come from a family where holiday meetings are very important and when someone or some people are missing it seems a little more empty.

I applaud you leaving to go to Disney. Have fun, your family will miss you.

No one can make you feel guilty unless you allow them too. We are going through the same, except it is not for a holiday, any time we plan a Disney trip we are made to feel guilty - what again??!! So we are not telling them until right before we leave!

Dont feel guilty! Its your life to do as you please.

We are going this year for our first Christmas too. I have to admit I do feel bad leaving my family(Im trying to convince them to come) , but they are happy for us to be able to do this. DH's family are the ones who will give us a hard time and all I can say is "Bring it on!". They are a big part of the reason we are going. We had a major family war this year over not spending the holiday with his family, so guess what...we wont be with them this year either. :p
Ill see you there! ;)

I wouldn't have any guilt at all. First of all you are spending it with your family, just not all your family ;) In my eyes you are not obligated to be there to cook for them at all. Just go... no guilt and have fun!!!

My DW and I both come from large families, maybe you can do what we do. We have two family parties, one for each side, but we have them a week before Christmas, that way, we have Christmas to ourselves to do as we please. We have done this for the past 4 years and it has worked out great. My only complaint, I wish we had started it years earlier!!!
