The dreaded broken arm

We just returned from a beach trip where my 6yo broke his arm on the first night. After spending 4 days keeping him dry and still entertained, I am reconsidering the wisdom of taking him to Orlando for 2 days of water parks. Really, we just have the two pluses left and planned this whole trip just to use them. The orthopedist at the ER said he will have an above the elbow cast and we are going tomorrow to get the splint removed and cast on. I'm sure that even if I could keep this monstrosity dry, the waterparks probably aren't going to allow a big hunk of fiberglass down the slides.

Guess the grandparents will just have to keep all three kids at home (with the dog they were already watching) and my husband and I will have a little unplanned parents weekend away. No parks or anything. We'll just check out the Peabody, have a few nice meals etc... After 4 weeks of taking care of my new "baby," I'll be ready for a break.

sorry to hear about your DS arm. I am sure you are correct about the water parks not allowing him on, for his safety as well as others.

I know how you feel. My DD broke a bone in her elbow a week after she turned 2 years old. We had planned a trip to Disneyland to celebrate, 2 weeks after her birthday. We usually don't go the weekend of because her birthday normally falls on Labor Day weekend.

Long story short. We still went to try and make the best out of the situation. She still had a great time but it was very hard to keep her away from the water stuff she really enjoys. (we had to take special care because her cast was made of a special paper mache type of material that disintegrates with the contact of water.) It was difficult her arm was in a cast for 4 weeks and we had to sponge bathe her because of the cast. Because of her age her orthopedic surgeon suggested this, it only had to be dipped in water to be removed at the end of the 4 weeks. Instead of the standard method which requires a saw /blade to remove the cast.

Anyway I hope you and your husband have a great time. It is nice to get away every now and then to have time to yourselves. I wish I could do that more often. We have only left our daughter twice overnight. We will be leaving for an entire weekend in October for our anniversary. Yeah!!!

Remember there are other things at WDW that do not require a park admittance .
While I very much belive that parents need a week-end away now and then and we try to get away every year for few days, I think that since this was planned as a family vacation, the kids are going to be very disappointed and feel really left out if you leave them with grandma.
You could check out DD, fort Wilderness, resort hop and take in a character meal. He might can get a water proof cast that while not OK for a water park, would be fine for the resort pool.
Is it too close to the trip to postpost your vacation?
You know your child best and if you are sure that he wwould be just as happy to stay at grandma's for the week-end, then go for it and enjoy the week-end with your DH. I might just be a softy and might be the only one that would feel guilty going without the kids.
BTW-The in-laws always keep our dog when we go on vacation. She loves to go to their house and even has her own suitcase.( DS's outgrown diaper bag)

Thanks for the sympathy. I just needed to grumble. Anyway, he got the cast and it is just a short arm cast. This doctor thought that would be enough - so hurrah, he can get the spoon to his mouth. I am still not planning to try to keep him happy and dry at the water parks though. I guess I was halfway hoping a bunch of people would post telling me how their kids rode all the slides in their arm casts with no ill effects.

And, Jordan's Mom, you're right, this is really just a postponement, with Mom and Dad going to use the reservation at the Peabody instead of cancelling it. We told all three kids that we would go to the water parks next spring - probably in May. They are OK with it, really. After all, we just got back from 4 nights in Myrtle Beach which is truly a vacation that we do ONLY for the kids, and they have had a full summer of fun camps and one got to go to Europe with me. I'm a little disappointed, but I don't feel guilty.
