The Dreaded Borrowing Question...

I have looked at all of the threads regarding this and I keep getting conflicted answers, so in the hopes that I'm not annoying anyone, I would like to ask:

My UY is Aug. I have 172 points from 2012 and 100 from 2013 for my 7/24-7/31 reservation this year. I know I can borrow the 2013 points but am I able to borrow anything from 2014? I'm hoping to bring along my son and his DGF and want to either upgrade to a 2 bdrm or get them their own studio.

No. A 7/24 to 7/31 stay would be in your 2012 use year so you can only borrow 2013. The only way to borrow 2014 is for nights 8/1/13 and after.

Debbie is correct. throw out your actual calendar and write it out based on UY alone:

your 2012 UY runs from aug 1, 2012 to july 31, 2013, so a july 2013 stay uses CURRENT 2012 UY pts.

in addition to current UY pts, you always have access to banked prior UY pts (banked 2011 UY pts, if any) plus borrowed pts from the next UY (borrowed 2013 UY pts, if needed).

if you are staying a few days in aug 2013, that would take place in your 2013 UY and, as above, you could use banked 2012 UY pts + current 2013 UY pts + borrowed 2014 pts.

I think this makes me like my February use year.....it runs more true to the real calendar year thus not making my brain have to wrap around anything.

Ok, understandable! So it sounds like I can make a reservation to straddle the time period and extend it into Aug to be able to borrow from 2014 and still use the accumulated points I have? Do they expect you to use the all of the points you have before your UY if its mid reservation or will they group it into the same pot since its one reservation?

For the July part of the reservation, they would use the 2012 points and any 2013 points that needed to be borrowed.

So if the July part was 200 points, you would use the 172 2012 points and borrow 28 2013 points for that part of the reservation. Then if spanning into your 2013 August UY, you would use the rest of the 2013 points. If there's more, then for the August part of the reservation you could borrow from 2014 UY if needed.

They aren't just lumped together; they are very specific. Don't borrow the 2013 points into 2012 until you know EXACTLY how many you'll need, because that borrowing cannot be undone.



Hope that makes sense. I started our DVC life with banking AND borrowing, so while I know how to do it, sometimes I can't explain it well. I do better with a piece of paper and a diagram.

Just be glad you don't have a December UY...that's even more confusing!

Oh God...I wouldn't know which end was up if my UY was Dec! Thank you for explaining this to me!

Ironically, I'm looking now and wondering if all of my accumulated points are NOT up for loss as I originally thought. I have 72 banked and 100 from 2012...This made me realize my 2012 points may still be ok to use past the end of July so if that's the case, I only have 72 points that I would have to use in July and I can alter the reservation to extend into Aug where I can borrow if my DS and DGF can come! I hope...right?

If you had already banked them, then you could use them past July but it is too late now to bank the 2012 ones to use in August instead.

You can still use your 72 banked 2011 points and 100 2012 points for the reservation from 7/24-7/31. If you need more than 172, you'd have to borrow form 2013 UY.

For the reservation starting 8/1 (and beyond), you can use the remaining 2013 UY points and borrow from 2014 UY.

Note that if you are going to straddle UYs (say 7/24-8/3), you CANNOT book online, you'd have to call MS. Unless, you'll book them separately, then call MS to combine/link.

Whatever you decide, make sure your plans are firm. Traveling that late in your UY using banked, current, borrowed and extra-borrowed (the "fourth" UY), you will lose all of them (except the borrowed 2014) if you cancel.

Wow...I guess I am planning one of those epic trips...LOL! I went ahead and booked the July part, and due to flight costs, we booked 7/25-7/31. If we decide to extend, we will use the one time buy perk for that last July night, then use our remaining 2013 points and borrow some of 2014. Now to just hope DH can take that much time from work! If not, I won't complain for the week we have, as of a week ago I was pouting there was no trip home in the past 2 yrs and none in sight!

AAAAAAND we are off! I am this moment on hold with MS while they change my arrival from 7/25 to 7/26, then extend it out on the other end until 8/3 making it an 8 night stay! And we will actually get a full 9 day stay since we will be arriving in MCO at 930am, and departing on 8/3 at almost 9pm! I have had to use the rest of my 2012 points for the nights in July as I have an Aug UY, I borrowed my 2013 points to cover that spread and now I am borrowing some of 2014 points to cover the 2 nights in Aug. We could have spread this out to more days but we needed a 2 bedroom since we have 2 adult kids, an adult DGF and 2 younger 11 and 12 yrs old as their first time!

And we are all set! Now off to make the flight reservations!!
