The Do and Don't of Room Service

Luckily it wasn't painful at all. I had taken my daughter as a post-cancer bucket list item & for something to be about her instead of my cancer. Turns out after you've been in a long surgery (mine was 8 hours) that it's fairly normal to have cracked or broken teeth. I just didn't realize this & that tooth was already cracked from my surgery. It was just the salad that took it down! Which is the most comic part.

Yea to a post cancer trip. I wonder if during surgery one grinds their teeth, making it normal to have cracked teeth. I am glad it was not painful.

We ordered room service only once out of 4 cruises and really enjoyed it. It was the Alaskan cruise and we got to stay warm, enjoy the view and have a yummy meal. We had the steak sandwich, grilled salmon salad and of course Mickey bars. I found the Mickey bars melted a bit when it arrived. The sandwich and salad were surprisingly good. Would order again in the upcoming cruise if we miss lunch.

I feel like I read somewhere on DIS this past year that they got rid of the All Hands on Deck and replaced it with a "Cheese Amenity Plate" that cost money?

Anyways...we ordered the All Hands on Deck every single afternoon while we were getting ready for the show (2nd seating)...and had wine...and GF Crackers that I packed from home.

We also ordered Pizzas a few afternoons when we were just spent. 15 consecutive days on a DCL ship is tiring.

On all port days, we ordered continental breakfast. That was handy to have when we had 7am meeting times for excursions. We did fruit, coffee, bagels and cheese, cereal and milk...pre-ordered.

In the evenings, we would order Mickey Bars and sometimes cookies too...and then make ice cream sandwiches.

I think we ordered the burger once, but not memorable.

My advice would be to plan on delivery waits being up to an hour...that was the longest wait. Most of the time it was 30-40 minutes. And we tipped $1 per item...and $3 minimum and $10 max (on continental breakfast...it was quite a few items).

They got rid of it and immediately brought it back.

We did breakfast every morning and my older son and I would have a late night snack after I called him up from the clubs around 10. I always got the cheese plate and he got various items. It was awesome to sit on our deck and bond while the little guy was already asleep.

Aside from the pubs is room service the only place you can get wings? And is it the usual amount you'd get with an order at a restaurant/bar ie: 1lb of wings

Is the burgers/mac and cheese the same you'd get from the quick serve/MDR?

Also, I wouldn't mind seeing some pictures of room service orders :rolleyes1

We used it for dinner one night that we stayed in. It was a very nice evening just enjoying dinner, the ocean, a DISNEY movie, and each other! Planning on doing it again this time - it's great for late & lazy pool fun while everyone else was eating/headed toward/getting ready for dinner.

I think I had salmon? Not sure, but it was pretty good. Disclaimer: I'm not too picky about food :D

All Hands on Deck, cheeseburger, mac n cheese. I will say that DD was disappointed in the latter b/c it says "baked macaroni and cheese" on the menu, so she was thinking it would be similar to the Martha Stewart recipe I make at home, baked with homemade bechamel, gruyere, topped with breadcrumbs and more cheese... but it was the exact same mac n cheese from the MDRs and Cabanas, just served in a little crock, LOL! No crumb topping or evidence of any baking whatsoever. I had predicted that would be the case, and she wasn't happy when I was proven correct!

Without admittedly not reading all post in this thread.

The most misunderstood aspect regarding room service is you can tip with a room service receipt.

You just have to ask for one.

Sometimes they have one, sometimes not.

But if you ask for one so you can tip, you will receive one.

What I say when I call Room Service is, if you want a tip, bring a receipt.
Then they bring a receipt, and you can tip on the receipt.

Of course this is helpful if you have no/low cash.

Many pax prefer to have all charges on the house bill for airline CC mileage accrual.

If they deliver without a receipt, and you say you asked for one, to deliver a tip, trust me, they will return to cabin with a receipt expeditiously.

JME

And yes, I know if tip in cash, delivery CM gets the $.
If tipped on a receipt it is shared with another. OH my ! ! ! . Imagine that.
Whatever. I tip very well on receipt. so ... I will let then work it out.
I spend more time with the phone agent than the delivery person fwiw.

May everyone have expeditious room service aboard all vessels.

And tip what makes you comfortable.

Having room service before an early morning excursion was amazing. Coffee, hot chocolate, croissants, a bagel, cereal and milk. Funny it took us a while to find the bagel because I was very specific on the number of each item I wanted. There was three of us and we all wanted different things so I didn't want them bringing us a bunch of food that we wouldn't eat. So by each Item I wrote the number of each item I wanted (the instructions only said a check mark) And they got all of them exactly right. Except for we couldn't find the bagel. After eating everything else and started cleaning up we found the bagel nicely wrapped in a cloth napkin on the tray. It was a shame because I could tell that it had been toasted and would have been nice and warm if I noticed it first. So if you ordered a bagel and it is not right under the covered tray....look in the folded napkin.

We order room service a few times each cruise - usually as a late lunch when we are too lazy to go upstairs to the quick service counters ourselves. We've had the burgers (same as the quick service) and the BLT's - these are our go to's along with Mickey Bars and Oatmeal Raisin cookies. I've tried the steak sandwich and pizza. All are okay. Just wanted to mention that if you have a special request (fries instead of chips with the BLT, or no condiments or butter on the BLT or steak sandwich - if I requested no mayo, they slather it with butter for some reason) those are usually difficult to communicate and we usually only get our request 50% of the time.

My rule of thumb on tipping - the MDR servers suggested tip comes to $4 per person per day and these guys work really hard for that money - working 3 meals a day even though I may only see them for one. The room service attendant is walking a cart holding my tray of food from the kitchen to my cabin -- maybe working for me 5-10 minutes tops (depending on how long they wait for the service elevator and if they are also the one picking up the tray later). I don't go by the $1/item suggestion - I tip by trip - typically $5 (but then I'm never ordering just a carafe of coffee or one cheese plate - that isn't worth $5 to me for someone to bring that to me).

One other note on the time it takes to get room service -- it really depends on when and what you are ordering. There are very busy times (afternoons when everyone seems to be returning from port is a big one) and hot food items can take 45-60 minutes, whereas if you order only non-cooked items at the same time you might have them in 15-20 minutes. If you are ordering Mickey Bars with hot food items, plan on eating the Mickey Bar first. Seems that is the first item placed on the tray and they are VERY melty by time they arrive.

I enjoy working out first thing in the morning, so I normally order a pot of coffee and something light to eat before I head to the gym. My dad and husband have turned that in to a standard order for pastries.

This is us- before a run. Coffee, for sure, quick bowl of cereal. Sometimes cookies at night. We tip by trip-$5.00/delivery. Always on time or at the beginning of the window we have check marked for delivery.

We have ordered the wings, cheese platter and mickey bars. All were awesome. Have never ordered breakfast because the options are limited.

Luckily it wasn't painful at all. I had taken my daughter as a post-cancer bucket list item & for something to be about her instead of my cancer. I hope you are getting better. That is a wonderful item to add on a bucket list (and actually do).

yeah, after my cancer stuff I spit out a tooth while giving my newborn a bath...

When my husband and I go to Palo, my girls like to order room service. It's a big treat to them (they don't like the dinner in the kids clubs). Now that they're older, they just stay in the room and eat and watch movies. They've had the chicken fingers, wings, burger, ceasar salad, mac n cheese, Mickey bars. All pretty good, and it's all come pretty quickly. After the muster drill, we order the all hands on deck plate and I am always shocked how quickly that comes (but I guess they're ready for all the orders!). I think this time, we'll use the coffee in the a.m. as our wake up call. We really, really don't like the coffee on the buffets.
