I think you can tip with Disney dollars. Disney dollars can be turned into cash at any time, unlike a gift certificate.

Anytime you pay with Disney dollars, all your change is given in real dollars. CM should be able to trade their DD into cash at the end of the night

Exactly

That is good to know! I wonder why people get slaughtered when they suggest doing this? :confused3

No idea. I think maybe people don't know about Disney Dollars, that they are comparing them to GCs.

I am on the DDP and using credits for a breakfast at CRT.
Will I need money for a tip? Or is the tip covered by my credits.
I don't know why I am still unsure of this, but the back and forth over what is and what is not covered has me spinning.
Thanks for any information you can share!
:) Sheli

I think it's the word "included". That word can use two completely opposite things.

You can say "with 6 people tip is included" to mean the tip is going to be stated on the bill and required to pay.

You can say "at CRT the tip is included" to mean the tip is already paid with what is charged.

Very confusing.

A couple times on this thread people used the word "covered", and I think that is MUCH better for things like CRT. The tip is already "covered".

And how about using "required" for parties of 6, DDE users, and any other group that has it automatically put onto the bill?

Let's just dump "included" entirely. :)

(it's just scary that I think so much about all this, since I've still only been to DLR so far and WDW plans are not even being made firmly yet...)

Thank you! I thought it would be OK but I figured I would ask to make sure. I am not trying to "slight" anyone of $ to pay their bills. I am trying to use my Disney Dollars in appropriate and acceptable ways. Thanks.

I have friends that are going in February 2009. They are 2 families going together. Total party would be 6. Could each family book there own ADR for the same time? So that way they would have 2 tables (one for each family). This way they would not be forced to tip 18%. Would they seat them at tables right beside each other?

If you sit at the same table, you will have the gratuity added. If you have separate ADRs, then the gratuity is at each tab;e's discretion. I would not expect to sit together or near each other, although that is a request they can make at the podium.

If they do ask to sit with each other, and the request is granted, they are now a party of 6 :wizard:

My sister and my nephew have their own DDP package and myself, DH, and our two kids have our own DDP package. I plan our ADRs so that all 6 of us eat together. How does that affect the gratuity in terms of seperate packages and dining together. Will we tip seperately from my sister or will we both put in our share?;) :upsidedow

I would say the chances of them being seated together are slim to none. Even with ADR's made at the same time, they would most likely not be able to accomodate that request.

I would venture to say the tip would be applied here, because you are considered a "6 top." Even when you go to a local restaurant around here, if you are a party of six, paying on 2 bills, the gratuity is included on both tabs.

Yes, you are right.

Disney will bring you each your own bill with your own 18% gratuity total listed on it. This bill will be based on your personal party's food total.

My curiosity got the best of me so I took upon myself to call Disney dining. The Rep told me that even though my dining package is seperate from my sister's and the fact that we are a party of 6 dining together, the gratuity will be a sum of both packages. Not seperately.

Paying 18 to 20 percent tip for a dinner in which the server simply gives you a drink is simply ridiculous.

We're going in 2009 after loving the 2007 verson of Disney's Dining Plan. We'll just have to crunch the numbers to see if the 2009 version makes it worth it or not.

The Dining CM is wrong. Which isn't entirely new, or if they're right - they were confusing.

Your Food Bill - $100.00 (3 DDP Credits $0 Due)
Your Tip - $18.00

Other Parties Bill - $150.00 (3 DDP Credits $0 Due)
Other Parties Tip - $27.00

To me, the CM said you'd get one bill for $45.00 for the tip. This is not the case. Your table will receive two slips. One says $18.00 due and the other with $27.00 due.

Is it mandatory to tip them 18%? I mean, if the service is mediocre, my husband will leave a tip that is suitable to how we are served. On top of that, some families might find that the 18% out of pocket(may it be cash, credit card or disney dollars) can be something of stretch.

 It was so much easier when it was included in the meals. One less worry. Hey, just airing out my thoughts.:confused3

18% is automatic IF you are a party of 6 or more (regardless if there are infants not eating at the table, warm body is warm body:lmao: ) OR if you are using the DDE card.

In those scenarios, you do not have a choice in the amount, other than to add additional

Thanks for the info, Pumbaa. It is very helpful to me in figuring out what is coming out of our pockets.:thumbsup2

Is it considered distasteful to leave giving only the 18% if the sevice was okay? We normally do 20% for all service but just wondering... Also is it considered distasteful to leave only the 20%? Should we always leave more? Just wondering? Also what is customary for tipping concierge for making reservations for you?

Thanks

The only time a minimum tip amount is automatic is, as mentioned, if you are a party of 6 or more OR if you are using the DDE card.

Beyond that what's tasteful or distasteful is entirely up to the individual party.

Also beyond that, tipping opinions, are to be left out of this thread - as stated at the beginning of this thread. :goodvibes

I am glad you are doing what you feel is good for you - but this isn't a debate/opinion thread for tips.

Per the first post in this thread

New tipping thread policy

Tipping threads here on the Restaurant Boards have consistantly turned into debate threads with lots of arguments. They all tend to get closed in the end once they cross the line.

The Restaurant Board mods are willing to create one thread where tipping questions can be asked and answered. HOWEVER, this is NOT the debate board.

Here are the basic guidelines
1. No fighting, name calling or debate on people's personal tipping habits. This includes but not limited to:
  • I will not tip my server more than I tithe the Lord
  • I will not give a server more than I make an hour
  • Everyone knows servers make 100k a year, why should I tip them
  • Servers should be paid a living wage and not have to depend on tips to support themselves..hence tipping should be abolished.
2. No flaming anyone for any reason.

3. Any post deemed off topic or in anyway against the posting guidelines will be deleted without comment and the poster will receive an infraction.

4. Any other thread started on the restaurant board for the "tipping" topic will be closed with a note to see this thread (This includes DDP board).
Please abide by these guidelines - and everyone can get the info they need for planning their magical Disney vacations.

If this does not work, we will ban this topic from the restaurant boards.

Thank you and we appreciate your cooperation,
The Restaurant Board Mods
