Generally you tip before tax. If you got any kind of discount on the meal price though, you would tip a percentage of the cost of the meal BEFORE the discount is subtracted.

DDp doesn't guarantee a tip. Only parties of six or more are charged an automatic tip (and TIW users) and you can contest that with a manager if you feel the service was lacking.

I've been to a lot of restaurants in a few different cities lately - and most if not all of them have an automatic tip for parties of six or more.

I will have over $100 on my Disney Visa Reward Card. Can I use these to pay for our tips while we are on the Free DDP in August. How would we do it...just give it to our waiter? Thanks:thumbsup2

ok so on ddp when you get the bill...that is what you tip from? So if your bill is $165.47 (just typed in some numbers) what tip do you pay?

This will get moved to the tipping thread...but on your number,
the receipt will show the suggested tipping amounts on the bottom:

18% would be $29.79
20% would be $33.09

although I'm thinking someone posted that the suggested tipping amounts were based on the pre-tax totals.

Yes. ALL the tax goes to the state/local government, not in any way to the restaurant; therefore, gratuity is not calculated on the tip.

Simpler example: Total check $100.00, tax @ 6.5% = $6.50, total bill $106.50.
The 'for convenience' calculations on the receipt would be $18.00 (18%) and $20.00 (20%) - not $19.17 (18%) and $21.30 (20%)

if you have the DDP
don't put charging on your room key or they may charge your Credit Card and not take the DDP credit ...
if you have to charge on your room key Use your kids room key when paying for food on the ddp ..

This might have already been answered (I am still reading), but can you explain this further. I am not sure waht you mean. How should we pay for the tip when TS on the DP and how do they take the credit? Just confused. I was thinking that they could charge the tip to our room and take the credit off the room key. What is it you are suggesting we do? :confused3

Our tip ampounts calculated on the reciept were to the penny the exact amount, not rounded. We usually just rounded up.

If you're paying the tip on the room card, give the server a card that has charging privileges and make sure you check your receipt before signing to ensure they deducted the DDP credit and only charged the tip portion of the bill.

If you're tipping in cash or with a credit card, give the server a card without charging privileges to be sure you aren't paying the tip twice.

If you're eating CS or getting a snack, use a card without charging privileges to make sure it is processed correctly as DDP rather than OOP.

And don't let this freak you out! We do everything on the room charge and have never had a problem. We do use one of the kids' cards for meals where we have no OOP costs, but since we were charging tips and alcohol to the room, that was only CS and snacks. Out of probably 40+ table service meals on the dining plan over the last 4 trips, we've never had an issue with the card being charged improperly. Where problems seem to pop up most often is when tipping in cash and using the DDP.

You can pay cash for your tips. It seem when you put charging on your key card you sometimes get charged tip plus they add the meal and even sometimes the credits get taken off too!!! That is why so many people advise against it. You can put charge on your card then use your childs card for the dining plan but that still leaves the tip.:confused3. Me personally am not putting charging, I dont want to have to worry all vacation about being double charged for anything.

Ok sorry have only been on dp with tip in so....do you have to pay the tips suggested on the bill?

If you are a party of 6 or more (and it looks like you might be) you will be charged an 18% tip automatically.

For a party of less than 6, the tip amounts are suggestions.

Thank you so much for the explanation and reassurance! I appreciate it! :thumbsup2

TDC Nala...thank you!!! We are a family of 8 but there is only the 4 of us going the big boys are no longer interested in going to Disney:confused3. So it is just my dh me ds12 and ds10 (when we go).

Okay - I get this but how do you then pay for the tip?

I just bring cash with me for it. Before I leave I get an idea of how much we will spend maximum and then set aside 20% for each TS that we will eat. I carry all my tip money in one envelope and then tip accordingly. But with cash, no credit, or room keys. Make sense?

If you have credit privileges on your key card that is. But for people like me, there is no issue with that. Hence teh reason I don't do charging privileges. I rather have no probs what so ever lol

If I have $$$ on my disney rewards card can I use those $$ for tipping? I have never used the rewards yet but will have plenty when we go in August and was thinking it would be good to use them for tips
