The DIS secret handshake - Bad Idea!

I know it was started with good intentions (and it sounds like the secret handshake thing is not going to move forward anway), but I just wanted to chime in. I am a *very* new member to DIS. VMK brought me here, and I had been very excited to find a board with adults who enjoy Disney and VMK like I do. But I felt really sad when I saw the posts yesterday. Because I knew I would be excluded based solely on my "newness." I know it takes time to develop relationships with people and just putting DIS in my sig isn't an automatic "in" to creating friendships. In real life and in the VMK world I am quiet--it takes me awhile to make connections. But that doesn't make me untrustworthy or a bad person. The way this thread was going I figured I might as well just stop coming to the DIS board if no one was going to trust me because I'm new (it's hard enough for me to connect with people as it is!). I feel better now though with the turn this thread took. I think it all got talked out and thought out. Thank you to the members who stood up for us newbies!

Unfortunately, there will never be a fullproof way to be safe from scammers; I wish there could be. This is just one way the real world and virtual world are the same--you have to be careful no matter who you are dealing with and like the others were saying, use common sense. If it doesn't feel right, don't do it.

I haven't yet traded anything (well, except with my mule). But that's mainly because I don't have anything extra to trade! :) Eventually, I will have to jump into the trading arena and I admit, it's a little scary. But you know what? I will ask if there's anyone on this board who wants to trade first before asking the general VMK public. I hope that someone here will feel comfortable enough to trade with me.

Sorry about the novel I wrote...

I feel so sorry for Lisa and I feel sorry for all of us nice people, old and new, that get hurt by one person who is not reliable. It seems to me that just like RL there are people who are not what they appear.

I too am a new member and refuse to add the dis to my signature. I too have been booted from DIS rooms because I am not well known, and I too am shy and quiet(until I get to know you LOL). I guess what my point is is that to maintain the freedom and care we have for each other, we have to open ourselves up to the occasional thief and creep. I don't hold it against those DIS that have ignored me; I figure they must have been really hurt by a stranger at one time and are just really careful. On the other hand it saddens me that in a place built for joy there is so much suspision. I come here and to the VMK to set aside my RL sadness and worries.

What exactly am I saying? I think, for me, the cost of trusting everyone and getting burned occasionally is worth it. (and I have been burned as well) For the 2 people that haved claimed to be DIS and scammed there are hundreds of us that are not!

Sorry for getting on my soap box and I really hope I didn't offend anyone. This thread has once again shown me how wonderful and caring you all are towards each other, even if you don't always agree.

Hope to meet you all soon!

That was very well said RedBayBound.
Its nice that we are able to work out and talk about our differences without everyone getting all upset.
The DIS people are the best and I'm happy to be part of that non-exclusive club! :grouphug:

Sorry for any misunderstandings. It was only meant to help. Lets squash it and all be friends. :grouphug:

I'll leave the original idea for anyone who didn't read it and is confused.

Hi everyone! After a post about how LisaInNC was scammed by a fellow DISer during a trade a few of us "good" DISers got to thinking about a way to prevent this from happening. How can you feel confident that you are trading with a trustworthy DISer? Since there are so many new members here on the VMK board it is difficult to know when so many players have DIS in their signature.

Iluvcountry had the idea to have a secret "DIS Handshake". After consulting with BriarRosie, I think we have a come up with a good system that might actually work!

Our idea is this:

-There is a secret password that only a true DISer would know.

-They would know this secret password by being PMed by another DISer.

-You are only to pass this along to DISers you know to be trustworthy.

-The password is used in the trade chat box only so that no one else in the
room can access it.

-If the trader does not know the password, you refuse the trade immediately.

-If the trader says he or she forgot the password, refer them back to their PM to retrieve it. Do not share it on VMK!!!!!

Now, I am not sure of the best way to pass this around other than that you can share it with someone you are friends with. It is likely that you will get numerous PM's with the secret password at first from friends and aquantances.

So, that being said, I am going to start it by sending the "DIS Secret Handshake" to a few friends.
ok jenn, i no you said its now a bad idea, but you didnt explain why. if you did, its probably above this post. i think that you say something like password please? you could get temporarily banned

Wow! I am so sorry Jenn that you just experienced a flood of negativity all in one shot...something that is becoming such a common occurrence lately. :( I thought this was a good idea too.

Well i did think it was a good idea but once again apparently i was wrong, and am in need of a flogging.

. . . a secret handshake! Maybe we can also devise an initiation ceremony (after a long, tough climb through the ranks all the way to the 32nd degree, of course). Hey, secret signs, handshakes, words, winks, grunts and gestures will surely protect our precious young-uns. You know, if all you so-called "grownups" would just butt out and leave VMK to the kids all would be fine. They'd do what kids do; name call, fight, yell, cry, etc. and it would all work out in the end. (With a natural pecking order developing, of course, but that's how nature always intended things to be).

ok bye
uhoh. ever since i posted this, it has gone downhill. maybe i caused some confusion. i mean PM on the DIS boards. not VMK. need to go to school now :badpc: somehow it just said the post is too short. what the heck? i have more than 5 characters. there we go

You know, there is no need to be nasty. I fully admit it was a bad idea with good intentions. There is no need for you to come in here an insult us "so-called grown-ups" because we enjoy the game. That was just mean and uncalled for. Its one thing to post your opinions while there is still a debate going on, but to attack after it has already been squashed is mean-spirited.
How very Scrooge of you.

. . . You know you can trust ME! Unfortunately for me, I can't handshake, only wing shake. However, I can QUACK a mean password!

scgooge dude, even though im 15 and half my sister's age, my sister here has a point. not that its like calling someone a *****, but kinda like a little kid's most feared insult (if you no what i mean), like dork. that one even goes to high school, even though it doesnt mean anything to me. just krod backwards. im not being nasty, just saying that jenns got a point. we all make mistakes, so when someone helps you, accept the help. the Hey! is kinda like slap in the back :badpc: (ps, it would be cool if i could do that and that and the computer would spontaniously generate)

The original poster has retracted the idea and explained why.

I'm locking this thread now, but want to remind everyone that the DIS rules prohibit angry or attacking posts, as well as profanity (even if selected letters are *'d out.)
