I really like the idea of a mass get together. Not sure we need to go the non-profit route though. I am not a lawyer nor do I play one on TV but worked for non-profits for 17 years. Depending on the state you incorporate in, there are hoops you need to go through.
In Florida for instance, you need to also register with the Florida Department of Consumer Affairs, elect officers and maintain a board that meets regularly, file reports with the state, a 990 with the IRS and depending on the size you need audited financial records. We could do it but the only benefit I see is sales tax exceptions for events. Dues could be tax deductible for individuals but I dont think that would amount to much. Travel and an individuals costs for events is not.
I dont think that other Disney groups that do similar things are organized as a non-profit but still hold events and raise money for charity. If we do pick a charity(s) individual contributions would be deductible under the donees tax deductible status.
Not to put a damper on things because I really like the idea. I just dont think we need to become a non-profit. If we do decide to incorporate, I would be glad to lend a hand.
That is the kind of feedback I was looking for. How difficult would we need to make this? I have no idea, but thought if it could be worked out we could do some real good in the world and meet up in Disney to top it off.
