there the same ones in the cowboys stadium.:lmao: (its the eagle fans you have to descibe what that chrome football looks like.):lmao:

"And. . . . Boom goes the dynamite."

Besides Disney, I have two hobbies - Making fun of the Eagles, and Making fun of the Flyers. :rolleyes1

And if anyone brings the Phillies into the conversation, just remember, Baseball's not a sport, it's a Nation Pass Time, which is why the Pirates are so good at it. :thumbsup2

Cheers,
Indy

It's OK. I'll take 104 points without our top two stars. They were playing with house money in the Playoffs. But Frankly, Malkin hasn't had a good season since he won the Conn Smythe. Sid just got blown up twice in a week. He'll be back. And win a scoring title. :thumbsup2:thumbsup2

And you'll get both with the Buccos. Although, I have to say, they are holding their own this year much farther into the season than usual. And this is coming from a guy who hasn't seen a winning season since he was 12. Yes, you read that right - 12.

Cheers,
Indy

Score! Sweet excuse to head to WDW! :cool1:
Like I need an excuse. :rolleyes1

That's rough. Don't people understand that they can't burden their friends with sharing such a special moment with them? Especially at such a magical place as WDW.

I'm sorry that your gonna HAVE to go to WDW again soon. . . ..

Cheers,
Indy
I know - how rude! But, etiquette does dictate that I should do it. Darn me and my manners....

Hot Diggity Dog! That will be a great trip...When is the wedding???

3 bedroom grandvilla!!!!! when is the wedding????

They haven't set anything yet - maybe next spring. :confused3
Dave - yeah, I'm going to have to borrow some of your points to swing that!

My wife's best friend just got engaged this week and they've asked if my kids can be the flower girl and ring bearer.

Oh, and the wedding is going to be in Disney World. :woohoo::woohoo:

:cool1::banana::cool1::banana::cool1:

Great news! Congrats to the happy couple!

They haven't set anything yet - maybe next spring. :confused3
Dave - yeah, I'm going to have to borrow some of your points to swing that!

Maybe February? I hear it'll be nice Feb 17-24th or so. Some friends might be there as well... :rolleyes1

That live stream is making it VERY difficult to get down to work here. I keep looking back over to the screen with the live stream on it and getting lost in the sand and the palm trees . . .

I got my laptop set up and ready to do a dedicated feed all weekend! Thanks for letting us visit vicariously, Carl & Aaron!

Like I need an excuse. :rolleyes1

id would be honnored to loan you points but it seems someone keeps spending them.:confused3:lmao: but wait, ian is taking donations for the dvczerfs, stopher, 4 week,4 disney destination trip for hitting the 50+ mark in trips. i may have a few points laying around after that.:lmao:

And there is a ball bearing plant here as well.
It's sad I read that and the first thing I though about was plants vs zombies.

OK Dads - I know some of you guys also hit the beach in Myrtle Beach.

I'm looking for some good ideas for family activities for our trip in 3 weeks. Keep in mind I have two girls under age 4.

We've been there many times in the past....but I'm always looking for successful ideas!

Thanks in advance! :thumbsup2
I think its been summed up pretty well.
We like Broadway at the Beach. They have some ocean themed IMAX movies that are pretty good in addition to some neat stores and smaller rides
People have mentioned the Ferris Wheel. There are some rides and the smaller older Ferrris wheel at Family Kingdom. The new huge Ferris Wheel that just opened is called the Skywheel.
If we are staying in North Mrytle we'll usually head up to Calabash for a couple of hours for lunch at Captn Nances and to shop in the little village there.
If your in northern Myrtle Beach on Sunday there is a neat Church called Barefoot Community Church. It's casual and very friendly and they provide a full breakfast and ice cream.
Alligator adventure is fun for an afternoon. Barefoot Landing is right there too. We like the little Sandwich shop in Barefoot where you can write your name on the walls.
There's a brunch at House of Blues that about $6 a person on everyday but Sunday.

I am looking to do a summer vacation - and unfortuatley we are not doing Disney this year. ::MickeyMo We will return next year after much of the Fantasyland expansion is done.

We are talking about taking a road trip to Washington DC.

Looking for advice from those who have been there... Where to stay? what to do? etc...

How many days should we go? I know there is the Smithsonian museums... are they to boring for kids?

Looking for any advice....

And if there are any DISdads there, would love to meet ya at the White House. :thumbsup2

I grew up in DC.
As a kid my favorite museums were the Air and Space Museum, American History and Natural History Museums.
The old Smithsonian Castle is also neat.
Depending on what days you're there and your kids ages you might be able to see one of the kids plays at Fords Theatre.
The Zoo is really great. I loved watching the seals. There's not a lot of enclosed or covered space so it could be Animal Kingdom hot though.
The capital tour is neat.
I also like the American Indian Museum. Its got a pretty good restaurant in it.

I think both the Holocaust Museum and Vietnam Memorial are must sees. You need tickets for the Holocaust Museum but it is free. Make that museum the first stop to pick up your tickets and then go see other stuff until you can get in.

If you aren't staying Downtown Stay on the monorail line. You can stay as far out as Falls Church VA and its only about 30-45 minutes outside of the city.

Driving there does suck and parking downtown is a pain.

I'm playing a Travel Agent tonight....I spend a good bit of time in DC and I always stay in Crystal City (across the Potomac in Virginia) Depending on your price Range....the farther out you go, the less expensive it becomes, but Springfield is as far out as I'd stay--avoid Greenbelt, Maryland (like the plague)

...you can take the Metro Trains, which are safe, straight into the Smithsonian Station (go figure) and be right on the mall at the Museums. They'll love the Air and Space Museum and the Museum of Natural History as well...All the monuments are in the same general area, but it's still a lot of walking....

Everything is pretty much in that centralized area except the Zoo--take the Metro to the Zoo stop and follow the directions from there, you can't miss it:thumbsup2

Places I'd stay....depends on your budget..

1. Embassy Suites Old Town Alexandria (directly across the street from Metro stop)

2. Marriott Crystal City or Marriott Crystal Gateway (right next to each other) in Crystal City

3. Last Choice is Embassy Suites Crystal City--simply because it's not convenient to metro.

There's a Hyatt, a Hilton (I think) and another Hotel at Pentagon City that's good to go as well, but I've never stayed there (there's a metro stop at Pentagon City)

Go see the Changing of the Guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

Lastly....DO NOT ATTEMPT TO DRIVE IN DC....you'll thank me later.

All good recommendations. Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and Arlington National Cemetery in General is very somber. Changing of the guard is very touching.

If you're up by the Zoo you are also close to the National Cathedral.

I think Fed and Rob's advice was right on. The Metro is by far the best way to get around town, and easily reaches all the important destinations. The only things I'll add is that there are a few museums that aren't free but might interest you: the National Holocaust Museum (not for kiddies), the Spy Museum, and the Newseum. All are fairly close to the Mall. Ford's Theater is also a short walk from the Mall. If you want to go up in the Washington Monument, your best bet is to go to the National Park Service website for the WM and reserve tickets--they get reserved months in advance and go very quickly.

If your kids like airplanes the Air and Space Museum Annex in Dulles Virginia is awesome. Its got a huge hanger. The last time I was there they had:
an SR71
a space Shuttle.
A Concord
and the Enola Gay
a whole bunch of other planes.

My boy's are 16 and 11...and we just spend most of our time on the beach...then go out in the evening for a meal and some shopping...I'll keep an eye out for things to do...as I leave for Myrtle Beach tomorrow morning.

We went to DC during Spring Break 2010. We had rooms at the Best Western - Pentagon. Was nice enough just had went thru a refurb it looked like. And we had free shuttle service to a Metro Station where you can take a quick ride to anywhere you need to get too.

Some of the most impressive thing we did were...in no particular order...

The Capitol Building Tour.
The Amreican History Museum.
Vietnam Memeorial wall
Korean War Memeorial
WWII Memeorial
The Air and Space Museum at the Udvar Hazy Center...a few clicks West of DC...something like $14 to park...but worth the trip. Link

Also I would recommend you buy one of the National Mall tour bus passes...as your feet will thank you.

I did a mini TR back in DDC IV... Starts the last post on Page 49 and continues for a few more on page 50. Link

All good suggestions.

Even with gas at $4/gallon and considering the cost of the overnight stay along each way, driving would be about 1/4 the cost of flying, and might make the difference between being able to afford to make a trip or not. Anything that I'm not taking into consideration here that I should be thinking about?

If you are able to drive some portion of the trip overnight, it really helps with the kid-transport. We've drive to WDW twice from Northern Virginia (about 14 hours of drive time), and do the bulk of the trip down at night. The kids do great with a steady diet of DVDs and snacks, followed by sleep. Then we're there by 7am or so in the morning, kids are waking up and ready to eat, and they have gotten some sleep. Driving longer, I can see how this could become problematic in terms of scheduling a reasonable departure time, making use of a hotel, etc. However, being able to eat up 8 hours of road while the kids are unconscious is a very nice thing, even if they are good travelers.

I've been trying to convince DW to do a road trip one of these years, but she is very much against it. From Mass it would be about 23 hours. Her main concern is the kids in the car for that long a period of time, but my kids are a bit younger than yours...

I think the major issue would be your time, as others have said. But, if you have the time to take off, then why not? I think it would be a blast to drive and stop at some sights along the way...

Coming from MA, there are plenty of good places to stop. You could probably make it down to just north of Richmond for Kings' Dominion, or to Williamsburg for Busch Gardens for a fun stopover. Kings' Dominion is right off of I95, though, so is much less of a time commitment in terms of getting back on track to WDW.

On an unrelated note, I just got an email from the director. No need for call backs, I got the part of Amos!!!!:woohoo::dance3:
Still waiting to see if DW got a part. I hope she does, it's one of her favorite musicals...I'd feel bad if I got a part and she didn't.

Congratulations!

So after commenting last week about how we never get tornadoes up here in Mass., a couple touch down in western Mass. yesterday and wreak some unbelievable havoc. I'll stop challenging the weather gods I guess.:headache:

Do not taunt happy, fun weather gods...

I think's Fed's advice about the hotels is good (I'd lean toward Alexandria, myself -- if you go down King Street toward the river, there is a nice Old Town area. Also, Hard Times Cafe for chili. Yum.). Close to Metro is good. It really is the best way to get around downtown. Driving is not terribly scary (I would rank Boston and NYC as a little scarier to drive in than DC), but DC does have a quadrant system for streets, so you end up with this situation:

"I'm trying to get to 1400 C Street."
"C Street Northwest, Northeast, Southwest, or Southeast"
":confused3"

It makes it easier to get screwed up driving, or thinking that things are closer together than they are. Also, there are indeed Alphabetical streets, but no J Street.

The great thing about the Smithsonian is that they all have free admission, so the only cost is time if it turns out your family doesn't care for it. My family likes:
1. Natural History -- Dinosaurs! Bugs! The Hope Diamond!

2. Air and Space -- Lots of fun stuff for any airplane or space buff

3. National Zoo -- Yup, part of the Smithsonian, and also free. It's in the Woodley Park/Cleveland Park area of the city, in the Northwest Quadrant, so it's off the beaten path, but easily accessible by the Red Line Metro (Hint: On the way there, get off at the Cleveland Park station; the walk from the Woodley Park station is uphill to the Zoo. The walk from the Cleveland Park station is flatter and the incline for the hill is less. Or I might just be lazy.)

4. American History -- It's especially fun if your kids have gotten some American History in school. The exhibit on the First Ladies' Dresses was fun for people in my family who were not male... :rolleyes1

You can also scope these out at http://www.si.edu ahead of time to plan visits to the museums.

The Spy Museum is a lot of fun (well, for me, at least), but there is an admission charge. It also has been known to generate Disney-like lines.

Also, if you have the mobility, Reston Zoo, out in my direction, is a cute little zoo with some barnyard animals, and some that you would see at Animal Kingdom. Here's the link http://www.restonzoo.com/. You know those Watusi cattle that you can see on the AKL Savannah and on the Kilimanjaro Safari from about 100 yards away? Yeah, you can pet those there. Nowhere near the fit and finish of the National Zoo, but a lot of fun nonetheless because of the interactivity with the animals.

And, although I am a ways out of the city, I am happy to come in to meet DisDads. Or we could arrange something if you do end up at the Reston Zoo, or the Udvar-Hazy Center out closer to my place.

My wife's best friend just got engaged this week and they've asked if my kids can be the flower girl and ring bearer.

Oh, and the wedding is going to be in Disney World. :woohoo::woohoo:

:thumbsup2 Your wife has excellent taste in best friends, clearly. Wouldn't want to disappoint her, right?
