The DIS Book Club Discussion Group: Round 6 - Fall of Giants

Just started listening to this one on audio...so far I'm finding it much easier to keep the characters sorted out then the ones in Pillars of the Earth :thumbsup2

This is the kind of book that sends me running to the internet to look stuff up!

What happened to everyone?:confused3 I did not realize until I bought the book for my step-fathers B-Day that this is the first out of three books that go over centry. I'm very excited about more to come. Maybe, I will become a history buff after all this. Doubt it but I'm sure I will learn a lot.

I loved this book. I actually finished quite awhile ago but I didn't want to post anything to far ahead of the schedule. I'd like to find some more historical fiction that take place around ww1 as Giants has peaked my interests in this subject.

I found the storyline about Russia in the book fascinating...not a part of the history of World War 1 you learn a whole lot about in school. Wish he'd put a bit more in about the Tsar's "end" and the mystery there. I've always curious about Rasputin and was amazed to learn he had a daughter that lived until the 70's and wrote a book about her father. Downloaded it and it's on my "to listen" list!

How is everyone doing? I moved into a new house two weeks ago and then went to Walt Disney World, so I'm a little behind. Things are slowly settling down though and I thought I'd check in and see how everyone is doing. :)

Doing well here - crazy busy. Still looking forward to reading the book ultimately, but it's probably a good thing I didn't start it, as busy as I've been. It took me 2 full months to read Jonathan Franzen's Freedom. :sad2:

I have to be honest; I lost interest in the book about half way through, and ended up passing it off to my dad when I saw him before the holidays. The topic just didn't speak to me.

In happier news, though, my dad says he's really enjoying it. Silver lining! :lmao:

Congrats on the new house, Nikki! Hope the move went well.

Congrats on the Move! Unfortunately, I will have to pass on this book. The library has still not called about my hold request. I am looking forward to Book #7.

Happy New Year! :goodvibes

I had hoped to join in on reading this book, but I had just begun reading Pillars of the Earth when this book was selected and didn't want to put it down to begin a new one. I really enjoyed Pillars of the Earth and my wife gave me the DVD of the miniseries for Christmas. I read A Dangerous Fortune on PCC 2.0 and am now about half-way through World Without End.

My next book will be Fall of Giants. If I'm lucky, the club will still be reading it!

Now that I'm reading my third Follett novel, I have noticed similarities in character types in his three novels I've read. There always seems to be a couple who cannot marry due to circumstances beyond their control but come together in the end. Despite their being unable to marry, there is generally a child resutling from a one-time rendezvous, but only the woman knows who the real father is. A villian, sometimes several, who prevents the couple from marrying and achieving various goals, but gets ultimately gets what they deserve in the end. A villian's accomplice who survives, but doesn't fare well.

I'm in too! I have just started reading it and am enjoying it. I'm getting very well developed wrist muscles from holding it up though (haven't got a kindle :sad2:).

Seems like I got a bargain from UK Amazon - it was £9.00 when I ordered it ($14.25) but I think it's £10 now - still not too bad - couldn't wait for it to come out in paperback!

Hmm. I'll have to see if I can get a hold of the $19.99 one. This is another 'wait 300 days +' on the Atlanta library catalog at the moment

so far........for me, this is shaping up as "Upstairs Downstairs" meets "All quiet on the western front". i am sure that as this generation ages and the next one starts to grow up there will be more intrigue. for now though Follett is telegraphing each plot point from a mile away. ..........so its just ok for me so far..........Michener did this sort of thing much better in Centennial, Chesapeake and Hawaii.

Well I came by to check to see if Book 7 had been chosen since I didn't get around to this one due to holiday travels, Disney trips and cheer competitions however I see I'm not the only one that has been busy ;o) Let me see if I can download it now and get started. :goodvibes

I hope everyone who was able to read this text enjoyed it. I had some trouble with it myself due to the business of the holidays. I'm looking for something much lighter for a future read. :)

Just discovered this post - looking forward to joining in the future - subbing to find out about the #7 choice. Thanks!

i am only finishing it cause i spent the money on it:laughing:..........it is also most likely the last brick and mortar....real paper book i will ever purchase now that i have the Kindle:love:

I just finishedFollett's World Without End last night and really enjoyed it. I'm looking forward to reading Fall of the Giants even though it looks like our book club has finished with it.

When the next book is chosen, will a new thread be started, will it be announced in a new thread, or will things continue in this one? Thought I'd like to join in perhaps...

Thanks!
