Over the next several weeks, we will read and share our thoughts on House Rules in this thread. Anyone who is interested in joining us is welcome. You could be a first time poster or a regular visitor to the DIS.

Please check this post in the near future for updates including a reading schedule and any other goodies that may come our way. In the meantime, visit your local library or bookstore for a copy of the novel.

See you soon! :thumbsup2

Synopsis
from Official Jodi Picoult Website

HOUSE RULES is about Jacob Hunt, a teenage boy with Asperger’s Syndrome. He’s hopeless at reading social cues or expressing himself well to others, and like many kids with AS, Jacob has a special focus on one subject – in his case, forensic analysis. He’s always showing up at crime scenes, thanks to the police scanner he keeps in his room, and telling the cops what they need to do…and he’s usually right. But then one day his tutor is found dead, and the police come to question him. All of the hallmark behaviors of Asperger’s – not looking someone in the eye, stimulatory tics and twitches, inappropriate affect – can look a heck of a lot like guilt to law enforcement personnel -- and suddenly, Jacob finds himself accused of murder. HOUSE RULES looks at what it means to be different in our society, how autism affects a family, and how our legal system works well for people who communicate a certain way – but lousy for those who don’t.

Reading Schedule

The following reading schedule will be used as we explore Jacob's world in House Rules. Note that there are no chapter numbers in this book. Instead, it is broken up into "cases" and commentary by the various characters of the plot. To help everyone keep track of their reading, I will break the text into sections based on the cases and page numbers. If you fall behind or want to go ahead, please do so! Read at your own pace and enjoy. These deadlines will just help guide our discussions as we go through the novel.

Obtain Copy of Book by May 12
Read Cases 1-3 (pgs. 1-146) by May 17
Read Cases 4-5 (pgs. 147-241) by May 23
Read Cases 6-7 (pgs. 244-335) by May 29
Read Cases 8-9 (pgs. 338-445) by June 3
Read Cases 10-11 (pgs. 448-532) by June 9

Book Club Discussions

One of the best parts about the DIS Unplugged Book Club is that we can share ideas about our reading here online. In order to keep our discussions moving, I will post conversation starters about each section. Feel free to post a reply with your thoughts or other ideas you had while reading that relate to a topic of your own.

If you read ahead of the above schedule, please change the text color to white so you do not give away parts of the plot that the rest of us have not read. Remember, your participation in the discussion will make this a more rewarding experience. Post away! Don't feel as if you need to wait for me to bring up a topic to discuss it. This is your group and there isn't such a thing as a reply that is too little or too big!

Final Thoughts Discussion

The Cover of House Rules

oooh this should be interesting - one of my cousins has Asperger's, so i am intimately acquainted with the disorder and its challenges.

I actually already read this (on the plane to WDW, actually) and would love to discuss it, if that's okay!

I just downloaded this one...it was my first purchase on my brand new Kindle!!

I would love to join in, I am the mom of a 14 year old boy with Aspergers and only about 10 pages in and the book has made me cry!

Looking forward to sharing thoughts with others about this great book. I love this author.

:welcome: to all! I am going to be updating the first post of this thread regularly with information on our discussions, so be sure to check there often! :)

Hope I get it soon - in Maine libraries there are 231 holds on 60 copies!

Looking forward to the discussions...have already started reading what is my first Jodi Picoult novel. Thanks to Nikki for organizing.

Hmm .. I think I'll sit this one out after all. Not too interesting in seeing more of the legal system than I already am IRL at the moment...

But I look forward to seeing the discussion anyway. The other ones have been interesting and I haven't read those either.

I'm on bedrest with my pregnancy, so I might join in on this book. Our library has over 200 holds on the book and the audio, so I might get it on my Kindle. I've got lots of time now! :)

I'm new to The Book Club....this selection sounds interesting....and I think my new Kindle will arrive today !!! :)

Just got it yesterday at Taregt. Only read the first few pages, but I'll have my nose buried deep in it in no time.

Thanks, Nikki for running the poll.
