Below is the weekly article from the editor of our local newspaper. He didn't write it himself, and he didn't give written credit to the author, so I don't think there is a problem in putting it here. I thought it was very interesting so wanted to share:
"School Policy: Then and Now"
SCENARIO 1: Jack pulls into the school parking lot with a rifle in his gun rack.
1971: The principal comes over, takes a look at Jack's rifle then goes to his car and gets his to show Jack.
2006: The school goes into lockdown and the FBI is called. Jack is hauled off to jail and never sees his truck or rifle again. Counselors are called in to deal with traumatized students and teachers.
SCENARIO 2: Johnny and Mark get into a fist fight after school.
1971: Crowd gathers. Mark wins. Johnny and Mark shake hands and end up best friends.
2006: Police are called. SWAT team arrives and arrests Johnny and Mark who are charged with assault and both expelled from school.
SCENARIO 3: Jeffrey won't sit still in class and keeps disrupting other students.
1971: Jeffrey is sent to the office and given a good paddling by the principal then goes back to class and behaves.
2006: Jeffrey is given huge doses of Ridalin and becomes a zombie. The school gets extra money from the state because Jeffrey has a disability.
SCENARIO 4: Billy breaks a window in his father's car and his dad gives him a spanking.
1971: Billy is told to be more careful next time. He grows up normal, goes to college and becomes a successful businessman.
2006: Billy's dad is arrested for child abuse. Billy is placed in foster care. His sister tells a state psychologist that she remembers being abused herself. Their dad goes to prison. Billy's mom has an affair with the psychologist.
SCENARIO 5: Mark has a headache and takes some medication to school.
1971: Mark shares his headache medicine with the principal out in the "smoke hole."
2006: The police are called. Mark is expelled from school for a drug violation. Dogs called in to search his car and locker for narcotics and weapons.
SCENARIO 6: Mary turns up pregnant.
1971: Five high school boys leave town. Mary does her senior year at a special school for expectant mothers.
2006: Middle school counselor called Planned Parenthood who notifies the American Civil Liberties Union. Mary is driven to another state to get an abortion without her parents' consent or knowledge. Mary is given a birth control device and told to be more careful next time.
SCENARIO 7: Johnny takes apart leftover firecrackers from the Fourth of July and puts them in a model airplane paint bottle and blows up a hill of ants.
1971: The ants die.
2006: Homeland Security is called. Johnny is charged with domestic terrorism. FBI investigates his parents. Siblings are removed from the home and computers confiscated. Johnny's dad is placed on the terrorist watch list and is never allowed to fly again.
SCENARIO 8: Billy falls while running during recess and scrapes his knee. He is found crying by his teacher, Mary, who hugs him to comfort him.
1971: In a short time Billy feels better and goes on playing.
2006: Mary is accused of being a sexuial predator and loses her job. She faces three years in prison.
Quite a difference, huh? And we wonder why there are so many problems in schools today. Pretty sad actually.
