The Devil In the White City

You're welcome! Enjoy! :)

Ah yes. Another fascinating (and tragic) tale. I don't remember... does it name the friend? It's been a year or so since reading Devil/White City.
Millet. :) He died. :( Well, they all died, of course, but he died in the Atlantic when the Titanic sank.

I found it curious that they didn't mention the ages of Burnham & Root's wives and am looking that up now. One of them lived through the second world war, if I'm not mistaken, so I'm thinking she had to be young when they married.

I also want to look up what was going on in architecture at the time that Sullivan wanted to continue (and architecture historians agree was set-back by the choice of classical styles), but am having a hell of a time finding decent architecture historian websites. I may have to hit a (gasp!) library.

It might just be me. The whole architecture thing and murder is just up my alley. Throw in all the pop-culture crap and I just fell in love with this book.

...which I'll stop babbling about now. :teeth:

Millet, thank you. I've always been equally as interested in the Titanic story. I'll have to look him up. Something I've always found so sad... I'm not completely sure about this, (someone correct me if I'm wrong) but as I understand it, the only true and complete passenger list went down with the Titanic. I believe the estimation is 700 survived out of approx. 2,200. I always wonder about those lost ones that quite possibly were never tallied. :(

Ack. Sorry. This isn't a Titanic thread. Back to the original post! :)

Oh definitely rent the documentary I mentioned!! It focus heavily on the planning and building, on the archticture of the buildings, etc. I think you'll enjoy it.

Another very interesting, true (and unsolved) story you might enjoy... Death at the Priory. http://http://www.jamesruddick.com/publications.htm

Love history! Don't get me started. LOL! :p

I have a copy ready for next year's book club. One of our members said it was really good. Right now I am reading the second in the Big Stone Gap series by Adrianna Trigianni. I am enjoying it. Nice easy read for summertime. Something to keep me busy while waiting for my "midnight book" a week from Friday.;)

Just read it! If you lived here, I'd go to the bookstore and get a copy, drive it over to your house, ring the bell and slap it in your hands and say, "Read it." :teeth: It is that good. ...and bonus points for Walt Disney references, lol.

Someone posted a short summary. To go any further into it would be to ruin the book. If you must, you can check out its website, but I'd really recommend just reading it!!! http://www.randomhouse.com/crown/devilinthewhitecity/home.html If you go to "Excerpts" and read the first one, that gives you the gist of part of it. It's from either the introduction or the very beginning of the book. I'd look up which, but I've already loaned it out, lol. I'm pretty sure it was the intro.

It was amazingly well researched, especially when you consider that the author did it all himself, without using the internet and with no team to help. Pages of footnotes. And a fabulous index!!!

It is basically a documentary written as a novel. It's all true and all fascinating.

Even better than a shredder that cuts up credit cards. I swear. Honest to Oranges. :teeth:

I had to crack up at the beginning. April 15, 1912...Mr. Burnham (near the end of his life), aboard the Olympic, is trying to figure out why he cannot contact his friend who is crossing the ocean in the other direction on its sister ship. :)

OK, OK, you convinced me!! I'll go get it tomorrow. Would it be good to take to WDW on Thursday? I'll be there for 2 weeks - I'm thinking I'll read it lying by SAB and the Wilderness Lodge pool. How does that sound???

Sounds good. Just be sure report back when you've finished your chores, Missy. :)

Yes, ma'am. Although I might have to take some UFO reading - I'm getting beaten up for not believing in the Roswell incident. Still, I think this sounds better.
