Ah yes. Another fascinating (and tragic) tale. I don't remember... does it name the friend? It's been a year or so since reading Devil/White City.
He died.
Well, they all died, of course, but he died in the Atlantic when the Titanic sank. I found it curious that they didn't mention the ages of Burnham & Root's wives and am looking that up now. One of them lived through the second world war, if I'm not mistaken, so I'm thinking she had to be young when they married.
I also want to look up what was going on in architecture at the time that Sullivan wanted to continue (and architecture historians agree was set-back by the choice of classical styles), but am having a hell of a time finding decent architecture historian websites. I may have to hit a (gasp!) library.
It might just be me. The whole architecture thing and murder is just up my alley. Throw in all the pop-culture crap and I just fell in love with this book.
...which I'll stop babbling about now.
