The debate board

Unfortunately if there isn't a debate board those discussions will be on our community boards. I'd rather have the area roped off ( and labeled) so I know not to go in then to have to see it all the time.

*Taking Moderator hat off*

I have never seen the need for a (non-Disney) Debate Board on this site but am quite happy for those who run it to do things their way. IMHO, it serves no useful purpose, other than Rob says, as a shouting forum. If it ends up as a place purely for those with extreme views, fine. At least we know where they are and how to avoid them. To my way of thinking, there is no purpose in trying to engage someone in reasoned debate who is not really looking for it. It is too often a forum for people just to parade their own views (as loudly as possible) and no end of commonsense will penetrate their little worlds. Apologies for those who DO use it for proper debates but my advice is simply to avoid it. We have plenty to talk about here already and I personally don't have the time to monitor things which, ultimately, have no bearing on anyone's Disney holiday.

With you all the way on this one Simon.

I rarely visit the Debate Board, but understand that it does serve a purpose. Without it some of these 'extreme' threads would try to fight their way on to other boards, such as our own Community Board.

Leave them where they are. If you like to lock horns with others in a no-win contest, fine. If you don't, stay away.
Simple really.

I don't think having a UK Mod there would make any difference as Hilary said. Who would want that job anyway LOL :teeth:

DH as taken to posting on the Debate Board, and shares some of what he reads with me but there is no way I would want to post there.

Kevin made a good point, having the debate board there keeps these types of posts from the community boards.

I agree with what's been said if you don't like it...don't go there, I do think it is OK to have a debate board on a primarily Disney site, just as it is OK to have a WISH and Gardening Board.

Why hasn't it been closed down if its making people feel this way ???
Because some of us like it that way. ;) And I'd be willing to bet that you're one of those; you are excellent at stirring the pot, and I think you enjoy doing it! :)

Hi MHopkins2 nice of you to drop in - but please leave your Debating hat of if you please. ;)

Hi, First off, I hope you all know that most Americans are not like that which you see too frequently on the debate board. There are more than a few nuts there, however, and they seem to cheer each other on with their form of 'debate.' Doesn't it remind you a bit of the old Python skit where he pays to go for an argument and winds up in the room for abuse? Ignore those people, and that site, and let them have their 'fun'. Likely, most people have no use for them, and run the other way when they see them coming. This is the only way they can spout their inane blather and make themself seem important.
I've stopped going there a year or two ago when I saw that logical response was met by name calling. This is a much happier place. Stick here instead.
Joe
Of course, if you disagree with me, you are a fat head who doesn't brush regularly and wouldn't know what side to lick a stamp on and furthermore......(Ops, sorry. Getting carried away again)

Yes Joe your spot on ::yes::

But i find it hard that those who are in the majority don't stand up to these people.

I've seen some really bad comments on that board about Muslims - Arabs - Donating to money to groups linked to terrorists.

A Discussion Forum claiming to bring people together for fun - surely that debate board should be scrapped.

JMHO

As far as challenging them. It's like that old adage: Never mud wrestle with a pig. You both get dirty and the pig enjoys it.

It is not worth the hastle. These people are often on the fringe, and there is little or nothing that will make sense to them.
I guess all countries have their kooks. Ours just have access to internet is all. Sadly, a lot of them have guns also.

:p This is a great saying but one I've never heard. Maybe we should have a thread for useful sayings!

Edie :teeth:

One of the great things about America is that here we are free to say what we want.

I don't post on the debate board often. I don't agree with most of things posted there, but support their right to post what they want.(as long as they meet the DIS guide lines)

None of the posters there represent what all Americans believe, just as the none of the posters here represent all of your country men.

If the debate board bothers you, stay away or don't read threads that you know will make you angry.

In the UK we have, of course, the same rights and responsibilities with regard to free speech. As do every other Western democracy, and a number of other countires who might not choose to describe themselves that way. Perhaps one difference is that people in the UK tend not to state quite so proudly that we have this freedom - it's just kinda assumed that we do, and is not worthy of comment. Certainly not in a way which could be interpreted as if we are the only country with this freedom.

But i find it hard that those who are in the majority don't stand up to these people.

I believe there is actually a reason for this. There is a small but determined group who seem to have control of the DB most of the time. A newbie comes in, disagrees, gets the tar knocked out of them, and leaves. Some stay longer than most. But VERY few hang around the way the original "bullies" do. So the board is controlled by a very small minority, who are in fact the majority on any given day, simply because they have run off any opposing views.

It's already spilling over into the community forum. I am sure that was to be expected. I think it was a good call to close it personally. I think there is only so much moderating a volunteer mod can be expected to do, it was really getting very out of hand. But now I fear for the community board, as there seems to be a campaign of spite targeting it due to the DB closing :(
