Congrats to Miles!

YES. I don't think it always hormone induced. I think mine is stressed induced. I get the feeling that things are out of control and then I get all stressed and cranky and that doesn't really help any but I just can't help it.

Thanks for the congrats for Miles!

YES! I think you have hit the nail on the head for me. It is getting crazy around here. There is the whole synchro story which I posted above. End of school year means a lot to get done. I also am supposed to be having a birthday party for Miles on Friday, and I haven't given the invitations out yet! They will definitely go out tomorrow (directly to the kids, not in the mail), but still that is way too last minute for me. I'm sure that I'll have people complaining behind my back about the last minute notice. There seems to be more to do around here than can possibly be done. I guess I can just plan to feel this way for a while. At least things should calm down in 3 weeks or so. Thanks for the insight!

Well, that may be part of my mood. I'm trying to be an adult about this and no sour grapes, but I am a mother.

Laura placed 14th. Two people ahead of her had to drop for scheduling reasons, so she moved to 12th. That puts her at 2nd alternate which means that she can practice with the team but not go to Games.

That part is all great! I am proud of her!

The problem is harder to explain, but I'll try. We have 4 age groups in our synchro team. There is an 18-19 group that also contains a couple of 16-17 year olds, Laura's group is 13-15, there is an 11-12 group, and there is an intermediate group which is not as skilled as the others. The 11-12 team is coached by someone who is about as type A as you can get, thinks that she and her family are way above everyone else, and does not have much concern about the feelings of others. You'd have to know her to really understand. She also thinks that the girls on her team are much better than anyone else in the club (except for her own daughter, of course). Her team did place 1st in Regionals for their age group and is headed to Nationals. Those girls worked their tushies off and definitely deserve that, but their attitudes have really changed since that has happened. Two of those 11-12 girls also tried out for Empires yesterday, and one of them beat out the best girl on the 13-15 team. There was something really fishy going on in the scoring. I know that that sounds like sour grapes, but it really isn't. If she had beaten just Laura, I would have thought that Laura had a bad day and this other girl had a great day. I wouldn't have thought anything else of it. There is no way that she could have beaten the top girl, though. I don't want to take anything away from her, and I feel like I am being a hctib, but I just know that it isn't possible. This girl scores last in figures on her own team. She has been in synchro for only two years now, and she isn't the next superstar on the way up. Something isn't right. All that still wouldn't have me as upset, though, except that I have heard that the coach now has an even larger head and thinks that her whole team is better than the 13-15 team. Next year, all except one 11-12 will age up to 13-15. Four of six 13-15 members will still be 13-15. "Super Coach" has decided that her team should stay together and stay with her. The head coach always lets "Super Coach" get her way. With the numbers that we have, this basically means that Laura and 2 other girls are getting shafted. The one girl, Grace, that could stay 13-15 (and who was beaten by that 11-12) already has an invitation to move up to the older girls' team. Laura and the other 2 were originally told that they would also be on the older team, too, but now the head coach has told Grace (just her, not the other girls or the coaches) that Laura and the other 2 will not be moving up. The other coaches all think that the team should be split differently and that we could have a terrific A team including the 4 that are staying 13-15 with 4 of the new ones moving up plus a very good B team of the remaining new 13-15's plus a couple of the intermediate girls. If "Super Coach" is allowed to keep her team together (now using the fact that the worst of her swimmers can outswim the best of the 13-15's) and Laura's group doesn't get to move up with the older girls, they really have no team to swim on.

Alot of this is politics. The judges for the figures are some of the coaches (including head coach and "Super Coach"), so it's kind of like Olympic Ice Skating where they pretty much have the order decided before they score. I wish that they could bring impartial judges in, but it is just something that you need to learn to live with if you want to stay with the sport.

That was long-winded, and I'm sure that I sound like one of those mothers who thinks that her children are perfect, but really that isn't the case at all. I don't want to see anyone hurt. I have already told Laura that she is not to say a single negative thing about the 11-12, because I don't want that to get back to her and hurt her feelings. Laura has even said that she doesn't know if she was better yesterday than that 11-12, but she could see that Grace and Meghan were.

My next task is to convince Laura to practice with the team, because it can only help her to get that time in the water. She is so worried about what is going to happen to her next year that she is already threatening to just quit. I am trying to help her keep it all in perspective. I am trying to not let her know that I feel the same way that she does about her getting the shaft. I want her to swim and be happy, and I don't know if that is going to be possible. I just feel so confused and mad, too.

Thanks for letting me vent. I can't vent to dh, because he just doesn't get it. I'm sure that my other friends don't want to hear it, but you can all just skip reading. I do feel better, and maybe the sensible coaches will win out in the end. There are 4 of them to 1 "Super Coach" and 1 head coach.

Oh goodness!! I so hate all the politics that go along with teams.

I need to go to bed but I've got laundry to do first.

DH is taking his Mom to my company's annual meeting tomorrow. Its in Boston for the first time in 11 years. The keynote speaker is David McCullough who wrote John Adams and other historical books. My MIL will really love this. She's read all his books. DH is a history buff too. I'll stay home with the kids. I'll go to the meeting on Tuesday.

Monday DH & I need to go to the school to finally get the results from the evaluation of Lizzy. I only sent the request in February. They sent the written report home with Lizzy Friday. It will be interesting to see what they have to say. Lizzy was average or high average on nearly skills they tested (84 percentile on perceptual reasoning index) but was at the 12th percentile for "processing speed index". So she's bright but very slow. She's been able to keep up to date but we're very fearful that as the material gets more complex she'll begin to fall behind her peers and she'll have trouble on tests.

Here's what they conclude needs to be done:
*sit close to teacher
*use mix of verbal and environmental cues to help keep her focused and on task
*encourage her to repeat instructions
*provide her with a word/signal she can use to inform the teacher that she needs additional help
*she would benefit from frequent check-ins by the teacher to make sure she's on task
*allow for wait time

I'm trying not to be skeptical but it doesn't sound like much. I guess I was hoping they would have more concrete skills Lizzy could work on to "speed up". I know I can't change her personality but you'd think there would be some way to help her improve her skills rather than just put her in the front of the class. Lizzy is quiet and not a discipline problem so I'm afraid it will be easy to ignore her.

SO I really need to wait and see what they have to say. I'm hoping they were able to use the test results when they placed her next year. Her teacher this year is so patient and really seems to love Lizzy. I hope she has an understanding teacher next year. I hope Lizzy won't have too much trouble transitioning to her new school. She seems excited about it not at all nervous.

OK.....I really must go to bed!

 It is so hard to figure out the best way to help our kids do their best. :wizard: for Lizzy's placement next year and for some more concrete solutions.

Am I assuming correctly that this place is north of Baltimore? We love ribs and would be willing to drive to find good ones, but I would rather have it be on our side of the city instead of yours. ;)

ETA: I see that it is on "your" side of Baltimore. That would make a pretty long drive for dinner.... maybe we really need to plan a mini DDA meet in Baltimore and head there for dinner!

Yes it is North of Baltimore. It is off the Padonia exit on Route 83.

Is this a problem? :confused3

YUM! :rotfl:
That was exactly what I was thinking. We've got a Dunkin Donuts around every corner here in MA. On my 12 mile comute there are at least 4. We don't have a Krispy Kreme within 30 miles. When I went to CR in Dec they had KK's in concierge. Yum!

My favorite donut type item of all time has to be the deep fried cinnamon french toast things they have at the Crystal Palace. I don't know why they call them french toast as there isn't egg on them. I would pay the price for breakfast just for those. I love all meals there but a trip just isn't complete without breakfast there.

Beth-I don't think you sound like "one of those mothers" at all. I'm so sorry for you and Laura and her team mates. :wizard: Hope things work out for Laura and her team mates so they can continue to do what they love without stress!

 It is so hard to figure out the best way to help our kids do their best. :wizard: for Lizzy's placement next year and for some more concrete solutions.
Thanks.

Update on Aidan...

June 03, 2007 at 10:24 AM CDT
Well we didn’t get to spend time with Aidan yesterday as my Nephew was performing a public ceremony of his wedding vows and we didn’t want to miss it. Congrats Christopher and Stormy.

I did however keep in contact with the NICU via multiple phone calls. He is not acting ill, but it is confirmed that his central lines have been compromised and created some sort of infection. They have started him on antibiotics and he is tolerating these well. His Spinal Tap came back negative for meningitis which is a good thing.

The bad news however is that the medication that he will be on is at least 14 days if not 21 depending on the strain. This means he isn’t come home until he is off. So I’m just hoping everything is in line, so when that last squeeze goes in we are out the door.

He is still working on bottle feeding during this whole thing, so it’s not really a set back and it may take him the whole time to really learn how to bottle feed, but yesterday it sure seemed like a big setback at first glance.

I will post pictures this evening of his first bottle feeding that were taken on Friday.

Bernadette - it sounds as if Lizzy needs to have an outstanding teacher next year. According to the IEP (or whatever that evaluation is called in your neck of the woods) there is a lot required of the teacher to help her keep on task. I hope that you are as fortunate as you were this year in her placement.

Beth - I agree that the politics of children's activities are horrendous. Unfortunately it doesn't seem as if there is much that can be done except what you are already hoping to instill in Laura... the love of swimming itself, no matter what team she is on. I hope she learns that lesson well and enjoys her next year of swimming.

I don't know about at WDW, but I did see HSM Ts at Kohl's yesterday in the junior's dept. Would that work?

OOOOOHHHHH!!! It would....we can check it out this afternoon.

Hi, everyone! :flower3:

I hope you are all having good weekends - sounds like a lot going on everywhere. We are hoping for a quiet day here.

Yesterday was an interesting one. I was up until about 2 a.m. Friday night, finishing up my ADR planning once I got home from my work function. (I thought I had everything set, but then realized I had made no plans for the 3 days Jonathan and I will be at the GF before the rest of the family arrives! ) Then, I was up at 5:45 a.m. to get my notes together and call the Grand Gatherings Group Dining dept. It took me a minute or two to get connected to the right people, and by the time I did, the few tables they had at CRT under the "180+10" rule were gone. :headache: But, the great CM I was working with assured me that when I call back at the 180-day mark, I should be able to get a table with no problem, as I could have had my pick of tables for the 180-day mark yesterday. So, I still have that to worry about that reservation, as I'm making a ressie for 9 - all my nieces, plus moms, grandma, me and my mom.

It took almost 45 minutes to secure the rest of my reservations, many of them for a party of 16! :scared1: :faint: I was not expecting our group to have so many meals together, but we're averaging about 1 a day at this point. I learned a lot about group dining - mainly that Disney can't ensure such a large group sitting together unless you dine within the first 20 minutes, or the last 20 minutes, of a restaurant's dining times. So, we will be having a LOT of early dinners, but everyone will just have to get over it.

So, I was up at the crack at dawn, and against my better judgment, didn't go back to bed - I was doing some more planning, chores around the house, etc. Jonathan was working in the yard. I laid down on the couch at about 4:30, and fell asleep.

Shortly thereafter, Jonathan came in from doing the yard, and went to take a shower. When he got out of the shower, he stumbled into the living room, woke me up and said he couldn't feel his legs. His arms and hands were also clenching and cramping up, and he couldn't move them. His speech was slurring, and he was having difficulty moving his jaw, and it sounded like his tongue was swollen. Needless to say, this scared the absolute poop out of me, and I'm running around, trying to get clothes on him, saying I'm taking him to the ER. He's trying to fight me on it, but I manage to wrestle him into the car. I realize as I'm pulling out of our driveway that I really have no idea where to go, as the only hospital I know the exact location of around us is one that he doesn't have a good opinion of (as he's a pharm rep, he's in/out of a lot of hospitals). I decide to call 911, tell them what's going on as I'm pulling out of our subdivision, and the guy tells me to turn around and go home, as they can get EMT's and an ambulance out to me faster than I could get to any hospital (thankfully, we are close to a fire station). So, we turned back around, I got him back into the house and on the couch, and the EMT's arrived. This whole time, the guy from 911 is on the phone with me, monitoring his condition, and asking me for all sorts of signs of stroke. :scared1:

It was a great bunch of EMT's, and they got him stabilized with an IV drip, and on the way to the hospital. I think just having them there helped immensely, as one of the guys said Jonathan was so freaked out by what was happening that he was also starting to hyperventilate. We get to the hospital, they poke/prod, take blood, etc., and load him full of salt water. The final diagnosis was extreme dehydration and sun stroke, and it didn't help matters that he also has hypertension, and had had very little to eat before he did yard work in 90 degree heat. The hospital said in the summer they average seeing this in healthy men about 10 times a week. So, 5 hours later, we get to go home, and he learned a very valuable lesson. I'm just so thankful that I was home, as if it had been just about any other Saturday this summer, I likely wouldn't have been. Who knows, in his state, how long he would have waited to call for help.

So, needless to say, he's under strict orders to stay out of the sun for several days, and stay well rested, fed, and hydrated!

Don't let your DH's or family members do anything as stupid!

So, Bob and I have been perusing the food porn thread over on the Disneyland board.... I think the Coke Refreshment Corner at the MK may be the very first place we have to visit because of his ongoing love affair with this entree:

MickeyChililBowl.jpg

that looks nummy!!!

:wizard: for the CRT ADR!!! It sounds like you have a terrific trip planned!

Lindsay,

Good to hear DH is okay now.
That is one thing I have never had to worry about with my DH. He goes out mows for a bit, comes back in maybe has a soda or beer, then goes out and mows a little more. This process continues until the lawn is done and weed wacking is done.
Yeah it may take the whole afternoon but it gets done. :lmao:

Bernadette I agree with Elin....it might not look like a lot on their evaluations but that is a lot to START the IEP (or whatever it's called) meeting. In the course of the meeting you will more than likely adding items....we did, every year.

I am so sorry it sounds like it's been a weekend to be a not so nice person. Please give Laura a hug from the DDA aunties, and here's one for you:hug:

Thanks! I have a tendency to get a little obsessive sometimes, so I know that I will obsess about this for a while. The key is to remember that eventually I will be able to stop thinking about it and also to keep my feelings to myself so that I don't make things worse for Laura. At this point she is refusing to go practice with the team that made it. It is optional for her, but I think that she could use the workout and it would just look better to the coaches involved if she went in and had some positive practices. I've told her that, and she isn't listening yet. I need to make sure that I don't keep harping at her. I need to let it rest until the practices are actually scheduled and then calmly state my case again. By then, she may be ready.

Now you all know how crazy I am!

As for the birthday invitations...I have them ready to go! Since Miles is inviting his entire class, he'll be allowed to pass them out in class on Monday. He has a few others that aren't in his class, but we can hand deliver those, too. I need to stop worrying and just realize that it will be great for those who can come.

Beth

I'm going off of memory, so :wizard: :grouphug: for anyone I miss unintentionally.

Bernadette - it's good to see you around again. I hope the school is accomodating with Lizzie's teacher assignment next year. Could you guys work with her at home this summer on some of the new concepts she'll be introduced to next year to give her a bit of a "head start"? Good luck! :wizard:

Beth - so sorry that you're feeling out of sorts (I can be a hctib on a frequent basis :rolleyes1 ), and it definitely sounds like you have enough going on, adding to the stress. Congrats to Miles and Laura for their accomplishments in their swimming! I'm sorry to hear about the synchro situation - it's sad that there seems to be so much politics in everything. Here's some :wizard: that cooler heads prevail, and the "Super Coach" doesn't win out in the end. I think the attitude you're taking with Laura is just right! :thumbsup2

Happy anniversaries to Vicki & Chuck, Terry & Hal, and a belated wish to Beth and her DH! :dance3:

Becky - good luck with the interview tomorrow! :wizard: :wizard: :wizard:

Theresa - congrats to Cassidy! :cheer2: :cheer2: Good luck with the continued unpacking, and enjoy your belated Mother's Day dinner!

Robyn - it's good to see you - hope you guys enjoy Shrek!

Elizabeth - more cute Arabella pics - she definitely looks like a curious little kitten! I hope you guys enjoy pirates. FYI - a couple of my attorneys were telling me the other day that some Dunkin Donut locations are set to open sometime soon in the Metroplex, so there's hope for you! ;) I love KK's, but I can only eat just one - they are almost TOO sugary. My favorites are donut holes!

Elin - continue to enjoy your trip planning! It sounds like you guys will have a wonderful time! :thumbsup2

Glynis - I know I missed you, but I hope you're having a great "first full day" at DL! :yay: :yay:

Tammi - sounds like you guys have had a nice weekend. I'm with Elizabeth in thinking the candles sound like too nice of a gift. ;) Enjoy your Sunday!

Deb - it sounds like you are busy as usual, but I hope today is a little easier on you, and that your back stops hurting. Congrats to Hunter (and Nick) on their great school years, and yay  for your trip being just about paid for!

Jo - glad to hear that you guys got some much needed rain. I hope you're able to enjoy your day at Epcot!

:scared1: :scared1: poor Jonathan!!!

:lmao:

Yes, I think he has learned to pay attention to his body a bit better. As both our fathers said yesterday, he needs to remember that he's no longer 17, and can't punish his body in the ways he was used to doing when he played football, etc. He admitted last night while we were waiting for them to release him that he really wasn't feeling well about half-way through yesterday, but just pushed through the feeling. He said he didn't want to stop and have to go back out at some point and finish the job. I gently pointed out that if he had stopped and taken a break, he would have saved himself a lot more time and aggravation than spending 5 hours in the ER!

I am glad it turned out well in the end. I was very scared there for a while.
