Have you seen this Movie? Have you done anything about it or spreading the word?

Googled it...

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1313104/

Isn't this the documentary that won an Oscar for Best Documentary, and then the film-makers went up and some fella pulled out a banner with a phone number on it? It was sort of valiant but also kinda tacky.

I have no idea what you're talking about.

The movie follows former dolphin trainer Ric O'Barry's quest to document the dolphin hunting operations in Taiji, Wakayama, Japan. In the 1960s, O'Barry captured and trained the five wild dolphins who would play the role of "Flipper" in the hit television series of the same name. This pop-culture phenomenon fueled widespread public adoration of dolphins. It was when one of the dolphins committed a form of suicide in his arms, closing her blowhole voluntarily in order to suffocate, that O'Barry came to see it as a curse not a blessing. Days later, he found himself being arrested off the island of Bimini, attempting to cut a hole in the sea pen in order to set free a captured dolphin. Since then O'Barry has worked tirelessly as an advocate on behalf of dolphins around the world.

After meeting with O'Barry, Psihoyos and his crew travel to the small town of Taiji, a town that appears to be devoted to the wonder of the dolphins and whales that swim off their coast. But in an isolated cove, surrounded by wire and "Keep Out" signs, some of the townspeople hide a stark reality. It is here that the fishermen of Taiji, driven by a multi-billion dollar dolphin entertainment industry and a dubious and artificial market for mercury-tainted dolphin meat, engage in the unseen killing. Local volunteers physically block attempts by outsiders to view the dolphin killing taking place in the cove. Together with the Oceanic Preservation Society, Psihoyos, O'Barry, and the crew utilize special tactics and embark on a mission to get the truth on what is really going on in the cove and why it matters to everyone else in the world.

The film also reports on the alleged "buying" by Japan of votes in the International Whaling Commission. The film indicates that while Dominica has withdrawn from the IWC, Japan has recruited the following nations to its whaling agenda: Cambodia, Ecuador, Eritrea, Guinea-Bissau, Kiribati, Laos, and the Republic of the Marshall Islands.

I watched it in my Law and Contempary issues class. Really great documentary. Everyone should watch it if they ever get a chance!

I definitely do not jump on the ethnocentric bandwagon trails that western society starts to criticize all alternatives. This and the Native Seal Hunt are two things that I will defend. Its their culture, its their livelihood and its their food.

If cows were cute, it wouldn't be cool to eat cheeseburgers either.

If you think your meat is untainted look at the hormones pumped into it and the genetically engineered food poured down its throat. If you think your government isn't corrupt, why isn't Stevia the only sweetener that we use.

If you're so horrified by what these dolphins go through, why don't you look at the slaughter process for the food you actually eat.

Well the cows we eat are bred specifically for food and their population is controlled by the companies who depend on them. With out these slaughterhouses and cow farmers, there would not be near as many of them just running around. Dolphins and whales populations are not as easily controlled by man so they can more easily become an endangered species. However all animals are significant parts of our environment. And don't forget that people are part of the environment just another species and we are nothing with out the rest of it.

Dolphin meat from drive hunts in Taiji is highly contaminated with toxic chemicals such as mercury, methyl mercury and PCBs. Repeated chemical analyses have shown that the level of mercury in dolphin meat is much higher than the maximum allowable level set by the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare of Japan. The Japanese government and the supermarkets issue no warning that dolphin meat is mercury-contaminated.

So how is it tradition if the majority of people in Japan don't know about the annual dolphin blood bath. And Japanese people agreed that they would stop a tradition if it was going to hurt their own country's population. The fishermen of Taiji said that the Japanese people have no right to know about the dolphin hunt or the high levels of mercury found in the meat. When they are hiding this secret the fisherman are in violation of the Japanese Constitution.

There could be one in the making. You never know. Different groups of people can be concerned about any particular endangered species or a certain animal that's in great trouble, such as dolphins and other cetaceans/porposes.
