The costs of driving to DLP from Folkestone?

I'm just pondering .... as you do.

As we live nowhere near any ferry ports/Eurostar/Eurotunnel points, I'm wondering how much it would actually cost, in fuel, tolls, Eurotunnel (and anything else I may have forgotten) to make the journey from Folkestone to DLP on the Eurotunnel?

I have a 1.4 petrol engine car which does around 40 mpg. I don't have satnav, and probably won't have any time soon (I have no need for it here, I use maps and print-off directions from t'internet). Does European car insurance usually cost more to add to your existing car insurance policy?

Is there anything else I've forgotten which would add to the cost of a trip by car?

That should work out the cost of fuel etc.

Doing a quick search on google maps it is coming out at approx 224 miles (they say the crossing bit is approx 33.2 miles).

Est. fuel cost: £47.13 on a standard car @ £1.37 a litre. Not sure on the crossing, that would depend on what time of day you go i guess. As for tolls say E25 each way..?

We're in the North Midlands and diesel will cost us £100 (approx!), ferries were £39 each way, already got sat nav and the correct insurance. The required items cost less than £20, tolls are ¬21 each way.

European insurance usually costs more to put on current policies.

Petrol is quite expensive in France, shame you don't have a diesel as its cheaper over there then here. Disney is about 197 miles from the tunnel.

Crossings are. Cheaper if you go out of peak times during the day, I.e. early morning and back late evening/ night

Do you have European break down cover? You might want to consider this too

We're planning to fill up at Auchan then again at Calais so we have a full tank of 'cheap' diesel to come home with.

We are lucky as we are 30 mins away from the tunnel and my uncle works for them so he takes us across for £1 to fill up our cars occasionally 20 pence a litre cheaper soon adds up

Check your policy because when we drove in November 2011 I was delighted to see that I'm covered for EU as standard.

We are lucky as we are 30 mins away from the tunnel and my uncle works for them so he takes us across for £1 to fill up our cars occasionally 20 pence a litre cheaper soon adds up

We're 4hrs from Dover, wish we were nearer - I'd be in DLP monthly lol

Thanks everyone. i never normally consider driving because with 2 or even 3 of us its a decent price flying from a local airport and transferring from cdg. but we might be 4 next time so eurostar from ashford or eurotunnel may work out better. eurostar at current price would be around 240 pounds total, it sounds like eourotunnel would work out a similar price, including fuel tolls stuff for the car etc?

Another money saver to think about is whether you have any spare Avios or Clubcard points, as each time I drove I've used Tesco points to pay for Eurotunnel, and this time I had Avios to burn so got ferry crossing and travel insurance for 'free'. This tips the balance savings wise compared to Eurostar as does having more room to bring snacks not buy them!

yes, I was thinking about that - I don't usually save my clubcard vouchers up, but I could start (this driving thing won't be happening for a couple of years yet).

I see what you're saying there Nikki, we could arrive at DLP earlier and leave later if we took the Eurotunnel, no doubt about that.

Eurostar is still good if you can get a good price for it

I'm just fortunate to have a relative who works for the tunnel enabling me to get a good price
